Brian, I could not agree more. I believe there is a real performance gap between the team the Cardinals fielded on this trip when compared to their opponents. I say performance because almost every veteran Cardinal position player is performing at levels well below their career averages or have just come off the IL. Having said this, the gap closes if these players were playing at levels similar to their career averages. A better offensive showing may have netted two wins out of the five games, possibly three.
I don’t think it is going out on a limb to say that a clubhouse gets a surge of energy when the team makes nice acquisitions at the deadline. It is a showing of support and a statement of we appreciate you getting back in the race and we are going to give you what you need to finish the job.
Conversely when the opposite happens it has to be somewhat deflating. As LaRussa used to say, these guys are humans not robots.
Sure Oakland and LA are good teams. I didn’t expect us to win those series but I didn’t think they would go 0-5 either. We seem to be heading down a slippery slope unless the wild card is the only thing we are really after.
Unless you buy into the emotion theory making all players play better, the Cards would have lost all five in California even had they acquired Wheeler, for example. In the Wacha start, they were shut out on two hits. Maybe they would have lost 2-0 instead of 8-0.
Again, I am not defending the front office for not getting help. But I am also not going to excuse poor play from the players because they are supposedly heartbroken over no trades. They are all accountable.
I guess we will never know the answer to that but the players did actually play better in the weeks leading up to the deadline. They did what the front office asked them to do, which was to get back into contention (they actually got back into first place), then only to get rebuffed. I don’t see how that couldn’t have been disappointing.

Suppose you see a utility crew trying to fix a leak, or whatever they do that requires hand digging to be done. There is one guy in the hole digging and six guys standing around smoking, texting and leaning on their shovels. Another two directing traffic, also talking on their phones. you’ve all seen this scenario.
The guy digging is Flaherty.
I wondered why they didn’t start the runner, Wieters, with first and third and one out with JMart at the dish with a 3-2 count. Maybe that’s hindsight, but either way last season we seemed to do more hitting and running.

They did send Weiters. He is just that slow. He took off on three straight pitches I think. Garciaparra was talking about it on the broadcast and whether it was smart to avoid the double play and risk an easy strike-em-out, throw-em-out situation. Martinez just hit the ball hard and the 3B made a lightning quick turn.
Cardinals27, I guess you weren’t watching because they did start Wieters on the pitch. Most would make the same assumption as you, but Wieters might be just a shade faster than Yadi. Turner made the decision to go to 2B, probably thinking that even if Wieters was safe, they’d still have time to make the turn to get JMart at 1B. JMart was out easily at 1B and he wasn’t exactly hustling. Wieters was into his slide at 2B, but was still out pretty easily considering he went on the pitch.

Hard to play well when you have the disappointment of not getting replaced by someone better at the deadline.
While not getting another starting pitcher would have eventually cost us that is not why we haven’t been winning. When you cannot hit and score any runs you are going to lose. We have scored 7 runs in the last 5 games.

0-California sucks big time! If you’re a viable playoff contender, you can’t get shellacked like that….have to win at least a game or two. Back in the day, California would have been one of my favorite States to relocate to. But now it would probably rank about 47th on my favored States list. However, I do have several fond memories, as for 3 straight years, 3 buddies and I would cruise on out there at least one weekend a month during the school year. Almost without fail we would follow the same itinerary. Leave Tempe Friday during the late afternoon with a full tank of gas and a full cooler of beer. Arrive drunk in Huntington Beach late at night and immediately head for the big lighted pier to hit the surf. Get up very early the next morning to head directly across the pier to the Jack in the box for tacos. Then we would drive on down the beach a ways to hang out at Laguna Beach all day Saturday and then hit the Laguna Beach bars at night. Then drive back to Tempe on Sunday morning. Anyone else take memorable road trips back in the day? Go Birds!
