I just came inside from mowing the yard before the rain starts and I notice that Victor Scott is 3-4. You don’t see that everyday. He will probably stick around until Church gets back unless Torres can play CF.
Not watching but cardinals bats seem to be working today. If i was a reds fan i would be very disappointed in their team so far. Their coach should not be too comfortable. Might need to try the phillies approach.
I highly doubt the Red run out Francona, but I definitely think the expectations for this team were way too lofty. I put them 5th in the division in my predictions, just not a good team in my opinion.

More teams are hitting under .240 this year than ever in history by a large margin. And there are a couple that are hanging onto that .240 number really hard. The Rays unloaded 5 of their top swing and miss bats from 2025 during the off season and going with a “flat swing” ball in play more approach. They are winning, but a lot on the pitching, we’ll see if they are the trend setter. I’ve been saying for long time with as hard as guys are throwing swing and miss and totally focus on launch angle doesn’t work. I understand guys like Walker can’t just pound the ball into the ground like he was, but there needs to be a lot more line drive, get the ball in play.
The reds just based on what they were last year should be better than they are this season in my view. So they either failed to do internally what they should have done or francona isnt doing sonething right. It could change but right now thats how i see it.
Scott places a 3 for 4 day at the plate into the books immediately after I comment that he’s been a mismatched no contest hitter whenever he stands in this season…I can sum up what makes baseball so great with one simple word…”Youneverknow!”
It would be a tough call to name the team MVP among position players at this point of the season, but I’d have to say that it’s a pick ’em between Walker and Wetherholt and I’d lean a bit towards Walker. On the pitching side it’s hands down the Bogsider from Derry, O’Reily O’Brien…
The Cubs have two different win streaks this year of at least 10 games but today they lost their 7th game in a row and 2nd in a row to the lowly Astros. Tough times on the north side right now. Such a shame.
I think you would have to give it to walker at this point based on perception of him before season. Jj gets some love though. I think ocerall to me its the pitching staff as a whole. I figured hitting would be about what it is other than walker, pitching i just hadnt been impressed with any of them before. Maye was a question mark. So that has impressed me most.

Arguably Stanek and ScottI think jj is hard to gauge far aa expectations go. It depends on your view. Viewing him as a high first round pick vs a player in his first season in the show. Now i always view it usually is a struggle for all at first so i think jj is above so far but if you view him solely based on where he was drafted and how he fared in minors, you might see him as just meeting expectations. Like i say it depends.

Love those navy blue hats. I wore my navy blue Cardinal hat in our softball games yesterday. Unfortunately we lost both games. But those navy hats take me back to my earliest days of fandom and collecting cards, where the Cardinals had those hats. I believe it was the magical 1964 season where we went to red hats at home and navy on the road, before going all red in ‘65. Love the red too, but like the navy’s now and then as alternates.
Well Willie, Fangraphs thinks Wetherholt has been the 19th best position player in all of baseball this season. Baseball Reference has him at 10th best. If that doesn’t exceed expectations for a #7 overall pick a year and a half ago, I’m not sure the expectations were reasonable to begin with.
A feel good game 1. A couple of GABP dingers, which I’ll take. Nice to see Torres get his career off to such an excellent start. He probably won’t light the homer column up, but he looks like he could hit .300ish as an alternative to Scott and/or Church in the OF.

Well cleary you aren’t living up to expectations if you don’t perform like Bobby Witt Jr. Obvious sarcasm from me as JJ has done a great job and has performed very well. His underlying metrics look good and he has been quite unlucky. He has .255 BABIP and even he only got half way to his minors average of .335 and increases it to .295 his BA would jump a good amount.
Really great debut game from Torres. Happy to see he got the opportunity and that will be a game he never forgets. Hopefully he gets quite a few more opportunities. Sounds like Marmol wants to play Torres a lot.
I have to give Pallante credit. He pitched a lot better than I expected especially as homer prone as he is in Cincy.
The SP as a whole ahs performed better than expected. I am curious if part of that is the dedicated C system where Herrera catching McGreevy and Pallante and Pages the other SP. It lets each C learn very well the pitcher’s arsenal and lets them cut down on the number of pitchers they have to be so familiar with.
I don’t know where to find catcher ERA stats at anymore but I would assume Herrera’s is pretty good catching McGreevy and Pallante since they have the staff best ERAs.
The mention of the navy blue caps and batting helmets reminds me that it’s a tragedy that the Cardinals don’t suit up in that uniform for every single road game. If they did, in addition to sporting the sharpest traditional home whites in the game, they could stake claim to the best looking road threads in the Big Leagues.
Very fun to see Torres’ debut go so well. Good to get the largest win margin of the year in the first game of a doubleheader. They can go Graceffo, Romero, O’Brien for the last three in game 2 if need be.
I just looked at May splits for the first time. Walker (.969) and Burly (.872) stand out, and Herrera (.783) and Gorman (.736) are doing well. I’d not noticed that Wetherholt is at .619 for the month, Church .625, or Fermin .459. (Not surprised by Scott at .550 and Pages at .440.) Wetherholt will pull out of it, but makes me think that if Torres can bring a .700 OPS there could be a lot of playing time for him. How does his D look like in center? Church and Fermin seem less sure to me than my eyeballs suggested.
The Moneyball movie came out 15 years ago, telling a real-life story from 24 years ago. I suggest some of our members review this clip. It could be enlightening.
