Looking around the league, Paul Skenes had a great start last night of 8 innings with only 2 runners allowed. But the more interesting thing to me is his ERA. His rookie year he had a 1.96 ERA, last year 1.97, and now this year 1.98.
He will hit 400 career IP soon and I can’t recall of the top of my head any SP who started their career with an ERA under 2.00 in their first 400 innings. He could still miss that mark, but does anyone recall a SP start their career like that?
Dwight Gooden was the only SP I could think of. Gooden between his first 2 seasons would have had a 2.002 ERA. Maybe you guys can think of others.
Nice info on the odd, but fantastic, Skenes ERA info, Albert. If he finishes at 1.98 this year, will it be an indicator that year by year, he’s slipping a bit? Strange, but the pitcher whom came to mind first for me with a similar ERA to start their career is Steve Busby. I’ll have to look him up after finding my dog, who is taking his customary morning jaunt around the neighborhood.
KCB I thought Fernando as well may have been close but it was a surprising amount higher in the 2s than I recalled.
Pugs, with Skenes slipping at this rate in 102 more years his ERA for a season will be 3. Busby had an ERA north of 4 his second season (1st full time).
Yeah, Dwight Gooden was the first name that entered my mind in regards to the ERA question. And Gooden had worked well over 750 IP’ed by the he was 21 years of age…Haha! He was no joke. Bob Feller was way before my time but, I clearly recall being absolutely astounded every time I saw Gooden take a turn early in his career. It’s a shame what happened to him.
JT Ginn is on fire his last 5 games, only losing one game. He is a weak contact ground ball pitcher who can walk batters if the cards are patient. We’ll see how it goes. I think the Wilson injury for the A’s helps stunt their slugging train. hopeful we can take care of business and take the series tonight.
I just checked and Skenes hasn’t given up a solitary BB in his last 5 turns. The 3 ER’s he allowed about a week or so ago against the Redbirds are the solitary ER’s he’s allowed in those same 5 turns.
Steven Lee Busby. Just as I thought, Busby came into the league as a lion, posting a nifty 1.58 ERA(an ERA that Skenes could only dream of)in his rookie campaign.
What’s for din-din tonight one may ask? I’m cooking up a Hungry Man’s turkey din-din plastered with butter, cottage cheese with heavy pepper, sweet dill pickles and for dessert I’ll be swinging on by the drive-thru lane at Popeye’s to grab 3 of their scrumptious apple cinnamon pies. And with it being a Wednesday, I think I’ll jazz those 3 pies up with some Breyer’s chocolate ice cream.
For me the first pitcher I thought of with a low ERA to start his career was Grover Cleveland Alexander. Different era, but even he was in the 2s his first four years, even high 2s a couple of times, before settling in with six consecutive campaigns under 2.00.
Now I thought of Addie Joss. Will look him up.
Busby hung 22 W’s up on the board for a ’74 Royals team that went 77-85 and included former Redbirds Orlando Cepeda, Nelson Briles, Joe Hoerner and Lindy McDaniel. That ’74 team featured “Trader” Jack McKeon on the top step of the Royals’ dugout. Trader Jack was fired at about the midway point of the ’75 season and replaced by our own HOF manager, Whitey Herzog. Many recall that those Herzog led teams went on to dominate the old AL West for the next 5 seasons. I closely followed those KC teams while the Redbirds were entirely lackluster during that era and those Royals had some genuinely first rate rosters. Everyone knows about Brett, McRae, White and W. Wilson, but my favorite player on those Royals’ teams was the towering SS, Freddie Patek…They simply couldn’t get past the Yankees in what were some all time classic ALCS that would extend to what were then the full 5 games. In any case, Busby was a first rate SP’er for 2 or 3 seasons.
Whoa, Joss comes in at a career ERA of 1.89! But it took him to his third year to clock in under 2. Kind of a tragic figure as he was as good as anyone, but died young.
Saw a bio on the mostly forgotten Joss maybe a couple years ago, and there is a SABR bio book about him. Need to check up on those again and refresh my memory about the talented and ill fated Joss.

Din-din you say? Leftover chicken fried steak reheated in the air fryer with mash potatoes all smothered in cream gravy with sautéed squash, sweet peppers and onions on the side. For dessert I had some banana cream pie pudding.
I assume after 3 days off Scott will be back in the starting lineup.

CF Victor Scott LI had one of those Against the Grain frozen pizzas somebody recommended. It was very good. Ceasar salad.
Hamburgers with a can of Bush’s hickory and brown sugar flavored BBQ beans and an ice cold Coca Cola along with a makeshift dessert of heated up leftover cornbread muffins saturated with strawberry jelly. I’ll make a chocolate milkshake later on around game time to satisfy another round of the sweet tooth pangs that’ll sneak up and overwhelm me by then. I’ve found that the secret to a first rate chocolate milkshake is to add a nice splash of sweetened evaporated milk before firing up the blender. I like the Xtra large size shakes. Mine are right about quart sized…
Think we will hit a brewpub/food truck for din-din tonight. The Lovely Lady Bike wants to watch the Colorado Avalanche playoff game, and there are a couple of places close by that will have it on.
Wow, a quart sized shake. Now that is a real feat 1TD. I couldn’t even finish that much. Same with cold, frosty ones. Back in the college days we would drink beer by the pitcher, but these days two is all I can do, and that is not too often.
Same with food – just can’t down the quantity like I could in the youthful days. Probably why I have maintained a weight of around 20 pounds less for quite a few years now than I was some 15 years ago. That and regular exercise.
I see that Victor Scott gets his first start in CF in almost a week tonight. It wouldn’t surprise me too much if he has a nice game. I’d have to guess he’s feeling a bit of pressure to dial up his game. We’ll see whether or not he responds favorably to that pressure in a couple of hours. Some players amp up their game when they feel the heat and others cave. Let’s hope Victor is one of the former.
Haha!…I used to drink cold beer like I was mad at it, Bikemike. No more. It took me a while, but I finally concluded that I was dumb enough without it…In any case, I had my fair share. Now I get so plastered on chocolate shakes that sometimes I can’t hardly get up off the couch…
Yeah, I still enjoy a cold, frosty one, but more as a treat and not to “pound the Budweisers” like the college days, and younger adult times. Although for us in the Rocky Mountain area it was usually Coors.
Okay, din-din will be BBQ. Going to a brew pub that has a BBQ food truck, so probably a pulled pork sandwich or something like that – we will see.
