According to espn.com, we are 22nd in mlb batting average, and 28th in pitching (era). Our w/l record is 8 – 7. This is unsustainable. One of three things will happen:
    We will start hitting better
    We will start pitching better
Our w – l record will turn negative and stay there

I get your general point, Lou, and I agree.

However, BA isn’t the best measure of offense. To me, runs scored is the best and roughly equivalent to ERA on the pitching side. The Cards offense is tied for 12th in MLB in run scoring. Maybe they are overachieving in results?

Not sure. They are definitely getting a lot of clutch hits.

To underscore the importance of pitching, look at the 6 – 10 Astros. Near the top of mlb in hitting, and near the bottom in pitching. Theoretically, small sample size not withstanding, they should be playing .500 ball, not below.

I get it that we are in rebuilding mode and we want to get a good look at what might be up and coming talent. But if we are going to compete for a championship in a few years, you can’t have a bunch of #4 and #5 caliber starters in your rotation. However, I was glad to see May turn in a quality start recently.

We seem to be winning most of the close games and losing the blowouts. I think that is a result of not having enough quality bullpen depth. I could see them moving Leahy to the pen sometime soon.

By xERA (expected ERA), our starters rank #103, 112, 116, 120, and 132 out of 134 starters with at least 10 innings on the season . . .

    xFIP tells a similar story. Our starters are #80, 90, 112, 126, and 132 out of 134.

WHIP tells a slightly better story. Our starters are #12, 100, 108, 118, and 124 out of 134.

Basically, the prediction models above are all pointing towards lots of future problems allowing runs if we don’t get a lot better. Leahy and Pallante are consistently the worst.

xERA and xFIP tell us we essentially have 1-2 #4 and 3-4 #5 starters. It’s probably a little better than that because these models value strikeouts more than pitch to contact, but even if it is a little better, we still have a problem.

He looks pretty young…Is that RHP’er working the mound for Chaminade High School? I’ve been enjoying some baseball games at Meramec Junior College right around the corner from where I live. I can walk, or if I decide to take the truck it’s free parking, free admission and I’m normally seated in the proverbial, ‘Front Row’…The kiddos aren’t all wearing big sparkly necklaces, but they’re all pretty good at playing the game of baseball and it’s been fun seeing them play this spring. In any case, the kid in the photo looks to be younger than the Jr. college youngsters that suit up down the street…

Edit…Sometimes I even watch them practice. Baseball’s supposed to be fun and they all appear to enjoy practice.

I sort of expected to see a photo of Pochahontas all dressed out in an itsy-bitsy, teenie-weenie, yellow polka-dot, bik…Well, you know the rest.

Pallante ballooned his ERA up so much yesterday, which essentially ruined any trade value he possibly could have had. After his true colors coming out, all the more reason to get Jojo traded NOW!

Just look at Fitts and my poor good ol buddy Packy over the weekend….. health is not a given.

A decently fair offer for the following, take it!
    – Jojo -Now
    – Pages -Now
    – Fermin -Now
    – May -after a good month, 4th of July maybe
    – Noot – At deadline and health proven

Crooks and Torres >>>> Pages and Fermin

With Dobbins still on a IL rehab stint and Fitts now out with a lat strain Pallante and Leahy are probably staying in the rotation for the foresseable future.

Haha! Shuster works 3 innings to allow the BP a breather after Pallante surrenders 7 ER’s and the Cardinals thank him with a big fat DFA. I’m beginning to strongly suspect that both Claire Bloom and his little general are first rate…

Rapid Robert could really bring it. There is the motorcycle test where he was timed at 98 MPH. But I am sure he hit triple digits at times.

He could also really bring it in the form of his criticism of modern day baseball and the players who play it. If you ever heard him talk a time or two, you know precisely what I mean. Feller certainly didn’t pull any punches. It’s the primary reason I liked him.

I’m calling this one 7-5 Birds with Herrera getting off the proverbial schneid with a ringing double and a long one into the cheap seats in left. And what’s for din-din one may ask? I just returned from Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse, where a medium rare ribeye, asparagus spears and mashed potatoes were gobbled down. From there it was a quick jaunt over to Burger King to rustle myself up an 8 piece jalapeño popper bag and not one……not two…..but 3 of their scrumptious apple cinnamon pies, which are almost as good as Popeye’s.

Although the Posey play at HP is much more recent, whenever I think of a baseball player fracturing a bone, I think of Dave Dravecky. I still recall the replay of him going down and the look on Tim Raines face as he left the box and moved toward the mound to see what had happened/

Martinez touches up Libby for a solo round tripper and the Birds now bat in the bottom of the 1st down a tally. A quick gander of the out-of-town NL scoreboard shows the cubbies down 4-2 in the bottom of the 4th in the City of Brotherly Love. Dansby Swanson a 2 run blow for the visitors and Schwarber with a pair of early long ones for Philadelphia.
