With Pallante, he’s always going to be less effective against teams that are very patient. He lives around the zone, but oftentimes not in it. The Red Sox waited him out and caused him to throw extra pitches. He also still struggles some against more talented right handed hitters who he doesn’t seem to be able to strike out. We saw this in full display early against Bregman where Bregman just kept fouling off pitches. In general, he tends to get pretty good results so he’s worth keeping in the rotation. But he’s likely never going 9 innings. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of the time he goes 6 or less.
Yeah, it’s shameful, Lou. In ’71 our old friend Mickey Lolich took his turn in the Tigers rotation 45 times. At a 4.1 IP’ed pace, he doesn’t get anywhere near to collecting 200 innings of work. He compiled 376 IP’ed that season. I’d say he earned his salary, but that’s nothing compared to the 678 innings of work placed into the books by “Old Hoss Radbourn” in 1883…He probably considered that sort of thing as a relatively easy task after serving as an infantryman during Pickett’s Charge at Gettysburg…Haha!
Edit; Old Hoss went 60-12 with a pretty nice 1.38 ERA during that season. He took 73 turns in the rotation. In all 73 of those turns he worked a CG…Haha!
This is now becoming a trend where when Mikolas is in a situation where the Cardinals desperately need innings to save the pen, he goes out and throws a clunker. Maybe the pressure gets in his head.
This is the middle game thread, during the Red Sox sweep. This focus on Pallante, while Fedde and Mikolas throw blowouts, is puzzling.
Trust what your eyes saw this series, or make believe expectations? The starters results, are not make believe.
I suppose if Old Hoss could be resurrected and pitch today, his 82 mile per hour heater and 6 inch breaking curve might get him just as far as Mikolas got in the game yesterday. But back in 1883 when guys came over from the union hall after a hard days work welding pipe and assembling buggy whips they found those pitches difficult to hit.
The debate over Pallante is irrelevant from the Game 1 debacle. The loss belongs to Helsley’s meltdown.
Haha…Yeah, those buggy whips are no joke! In fact, it’s my understanding that all that flailing away with buggy whips, riding crops etc. was one of many reasons that pitchers back then aquired the immense arm strength that enabled them to consistently attain much higher velocity and considerably more movement on the baseball than today’s cupcake coddled athletes…Those guys swinging those buggy whips were no cream puffs!
