Yet another really tough lefty scheduled for tomorrow. Noot, Donny, Scott, Burly, and Gorman will probably be relieved if we can ever get a stretch of righties. I think the projected pitcher for Wednesday is Hurter is also a lefty.

Nootz doesn’t flinch at all when facing LHP’ing and, believe it or not, Gorman has never shown any significant drop off when facing lefties, but he struggles against anyone these days. Donovan handles lefties reasonably well, but doesn’t generate nearly as much power vs. LHP’ing. Burleson and Scott are particularly vulnerable, but Scott’s still cutting his teeth in the Big Leagues and someone has to man up in CF. In any case, when the Redbirds are facing LHP’ing, the RH’ed bats simply have to offset any real or imagined disadvantage against LH’ed pitching. I’m sure you can recall when lefties were thrilled to play the Cardinals and face Pujols, Rolen and Holliday…Haha!

    Pugs?

It’s past noon on the day after the gravel thievery. No sign of the police. I think I have accomplished a clean getaway. Hope so, because I might need one more bucket too!

It looks like the rain has moved out of the St. Louis area so tonight’s affair should have no problems. It rained and stormed during the night and so far this morning here in SW Indiana, however.

Rat – Do not……and I repeat DO NOT GO BACK to swipe a second bucket of gravel, or you’ll get pinched. That’s why I commented in yesterday’s game thread to take an additional bucket with you….to avoid going back a second time and getting nabbed.

    Tarik Daniel Skubal

    – 6’3 240 lbs.
    – Went to high school in Kingman, AZ.
    – Had Tommy John surgery in 2016 just prior to being drafted in the 29th round by his home state Diamondbacks.
    – Drafted in the 9th round by Detroit. Received a 350K signing bonus.
    – Becomes a FA in 2027. A client of the Boras Corporation.
    – Signed 1 year 2025 deal for 10MM
    – Married his high school sweetheart 💕 in 2021.
    – Lifetime record of 45-33 with 3.31 ERA.
    – Speaks both English and Turkish.
    – Major league debut on 8-18-20 where the ChiSox drilled him to the tune of 7 hits and 4 earned runs over just 2 innings. Saddled with the “L”.
    – Started vs the Cardinals on 8-25-21 and promptly whiffed the first 6 Redbirds he faced.
    – He’s a man of many pitches. Employs both a 4-seam(has reached 102 mph) and a sinking 2-seam fastball. A slider sitting between 87-91mph with a special turbo slider that reaches 96 mph. A dandy 86 mph change-up. And a curve with a knuckle-curve grip that checks in at 78 mph.

Well, we can beat Skenes at the drop of a hat. This guy is obviously a tough hombre, but these 2025 Cardinals can find a way to defeat this fellow.

We could slug better vs lefties, that’s for sure. 10 HR’s in 477 AB’s, is a 2.1 HR%. Pretty low.

Ivan already has four, and Noot two more, is six of the ten. If righty bats Walker (1), Nado (none), Winn (1) and Willson (1) add some thump, it wouldn’t hurt. Donny (1).

This will be a tough one to win against Skubal, but this club has been finding ways to put up a “W”.

Really like what our veterans are doing. Contreras has shown over and over he is a class act and a team guy. And Arenado felt he should be moved down in the order to accommodate some guys hitting better. These guys are really being strong mentors for our slew of younger players.

Right now a nice mix of youth and experience. A long way to go, but we might have accidentally found the right balance. That and what seems to be much better coaching.

Well said. Sometimes an organization has to throw several things against the wall to see what sicks. Maybe we have finally found the right combination.

We should have advocated for the front office to do next to nothing during the offseason a long time ago. Sometimes less is more..lol

I once again caution everybody about this little hot streak. It’s been about two weeks and there is still over 2/3 of the season left to play. Let’s wait and see how all of this plays out in the long haul before we start singing the praise of anybody that does anything good right now.

Let’s see where we are in mid to late July.

With the single exception of a turn against the Phillies by Gray in which he was touched up for 7 ER’s in 3.2 IP’ed, the rotation has been silly good for what’s beginning to be an extended run of games. Incidentally, the Cardinals fought back to win the aforementioned game in Philly by a 14-7 final. But back to business…The other previous 11 turns from the 5 man have accounted for 71.2 innings of work. In that total unit of work the 5 members of the rotation have allowed a grand total of 9 ER’s in 71.2 IP’ed over those 11 games. Those numbers translate into a 1.14 ERA for the Redbird rotation. I’m entirely aware that I’m belaboring these facts, but that’s almost as good as Gibson in ’68…Haha!

As Rat mentioned, this extended run of outstanding turns from the rotation is very out of the ordinary and, in all likliehood, will abruptly come to an end or at least level out sooner rather than later. But if it doesn’t, the Cardinals will collect somewhere around 120 W’s this season…Haha!

Vs Lefties is tougher for us as a lineup, until some regulars heat up, so the rotation shining during this run of lefties faced, has been the difference maker.

Yeah, jj, I don’t mean to ignore the nice work from the BP and the first-rate mitts on defense, but in my view, the rotation has been the proverbial crux of the biscuit in regards to the outstanding run of success during the month of May.

Regarding the ESPN article, I don’t understand the concern over the low K rate considering we have one of the best defenses in the league. If we had a pourous defense I would understand but we don’t.

Yeah, gscottar, he’s obviously enamored with the K and seems to think that it’s the only formula that will produce an out. I’ve nothing against the strikeout and there are obviously a select set of situations in which the K is sorely needed. However, there’s nothing at all wrong with a first pitch ground ball or pop-up…I’ll take the least path of resistance to an out over the K anytime, anywhere and in any game.

Let me guess, the bench is Burly, Gorman, Pozo and Barrero.

Tonight’s pitcher for Detroit collected 11 K’s in 6.1 IP’ed during his last outing as he allowed 5 ER’s on 7 hits in a turn which went into the books as a ND. Fedde’s most recent turn, which followed his CG shutout at DC, was a good one in which he worked 5.2 IP’ed allowing 0 ER’s on 3 hits. That outing was blemished a little by the presense of 4 BB’s and also went into the books as a ND. In any case, I never make predictions, especially about the future, but a little baseball gypsy told me the Redbird bats were going to jump this lefty tonight in StL…

Winn put the puddin to that pitch. To bad he didn’t get it up a bit.
