On the sac bunt, a college team I follow will do similar, in situations like with a cleanup hitter who has been tearing the cover off the ball in recent games. And the bunts seem to fail more than they work. Maddening.
I should probably appraoach this in the same manner as the proper approach to a possible no hitter that’s entered the late innings. However, I’ll say it anyway only because I refuse to be intimidated…I guess eveyone notices that this is a 1 run game?
Jnevel, I personally witnessed one in a slow pitch softball game I was playing in. But yeah, I can’t say I’ve seen or remember one of the real ones.
And even if the sac-bunt is successful, why would you use it with the guy who is supposedly your best hitter in the early innings of a game in which you hold a 2 run lead? It’s not even close to being of sound mind.
Furcal apparently did it to the Cardinals back in ‘03. I guess it’s possible I was watching that one but I don’t remember it.
I wasn’t watching 1TD – is it possible he was trying to get a bunt hit because the 3rd baseman was playing back?
It’s possible, Jnevel, but in my view it’s still a lousy decision for the 3 slot hitter to attempt a bunt for a hit with 0 outs and a runner aboard in the early innings of a game in which your team already holds a lead. In that situation, the 3 slot hitter is the guy who’s job it is to lace a double into the gap or rip a tater to push that RBI across. In my view, 3-4-5 hitters don’t lay down bunts for base hits.

Leahy is dominant in the 7th. It makes no sense that you don’t trot him back out for the 8th. The whiz-kid was whizzing I guess.
My prediction on Marmol is that if the Cards fall so far back that attendance is even worse than expected he will be canned in an attempt to get a few more butts in the seats. They will name an interim manager and announce Bloom will get to hire the next manager.
I’d say the word’s out around the league…The Cardinals are quickly earning a well deserved reputation as a team that’s easy to beat.
Road to nowhere by the Talking Heads seems appropriate for this team….drop to 1-10 on the road.

This is just karma for the Cardinals offseason, where they announced everyone must go, but then refused to trade players away…
What a disappointing game. I’ve thought we have been riding Maton too hard and I think it bit us tonight. This was his 13th appearance this year which puts him into 1st for the season on appearances (could still be tied if some of the other 6 guys get into a game tonight).
Yeah, it was disappointing. But even at this early stage we should all be well accustomed to these types of outcomes. This team is incredibly consistent. They’re now 1-10 on the road, 0-4 in extras and 0-5 in 1 run games. You can’t hardly get any closer to a 1.000 batting avg. than that. When you looked up at the scoreboard and saw that the Cardinals held a 4-3 lead prior to the home half of the 8th, you were entirely certain as to the final outcome. There was no need for a baseball gypsy to forecast the ending of this one.

Mo and Bill have a well established trend of trying to fool the public about off-season intentions, by saying one thing and doing another, often followed by a few tired excuses. As of a few years ago, only the fools were being fooled.
I think Gray and Contreras straight out said they wanted to stay and Arenado made himself really hard to move by restricting the kysr if teams he would accept a trade to. All three have no-trade clauses don’t they?
Goldschmidt wasn’t brought back.
Mikolas they just kept because who would you trade him to? Hopefully, unless he has a renaissance season, he’s out of the rotation by the end of May.
Other than these 5 who else doesn’t fit in with the transition?
