These kind of moves has to be a disrupting factor in the clubhouse.

Intangibles don’t exist. The lineup seems to be derived from computer selected matchups. Momentum doesn’t exist, so streaks are not predictive and are not factored in. Try not to think of players as humans and it is easier to understand.

From an objective viewpoint, I’m satisfied with a 3-4 W/L record heading into the home opener. Two of the four losses could well have been placed in the W column, so the team fully displayed an ability to compete in the first 7 games of the season on the road in LA and SD to start the season. Whether or not that trend will continue is anyone’s guess, but for now I’d have to say they performed better than I’d have imagined. Hopefully they’ll improve their position in the NLC hierarchy with a return of a couple of key players who are currently suffering from infirmities.

Cardinals get 3 at home with a team that’s off to the worst start in the Big Leagues. Skippy’s team has yet to win a game and sits at 0-7…Ouch!

bling, if lineups are derived from computer selected matchups, how do you explain the Burleson PH for Walker?

I wish Miami had won a couple. At 0-7 they are going to be absolutely desperate to win.

A pinch hitter decision in game may be a different situation from lineup construction, which is computer driven.

I think the Burly affair would have to be Ollie displaying his mastery of the game.

Yeah, they should be desperate to win one alright. We saw last season that a poor start in the first 30 games can effectively render a season over before June.

bling, you keep stating that Marmol doesn’t make decisions. He does what the “wonks” have told him to do. What gives?

Can’t wait for when Arenado, Gorman, and Walker start hitting. Haven’t given up on Burleson.

I was happy to see that the team tailor was finally able to produce a uniform that Fernandez could wear so he could play in a game – Stifle patch and all.

Seriously, I wasn’t unhappy at all to see him in that situation. Who else were they going to use? It was basically Fernandez or King or stick with another inning of Pallante. No one else was available.

I was a bit puzzled by the Burleson pinch hit. Walker has been scuffing some and swinging at some pitches out of the zone, but Burly has scuffled for most of his MLB career and also swings at lots of pitches out of the zone. I would have understood using Carpenter there except if they had pinch hit with Carpenter, then they’d have to send Burleson into RF anyway for the bottom of the inning so that would be using up 2 players and leaving the bench empty. So the right move was just to let Walker hit. Or at least that’s the move the “wonks” would have told Ollie to make.

The wonks would look at the bench Ollie had and do a face palm. A .230 singles hitter with a bad glove. Really?

I also wonder about the psych impact on Walker. He’s already been getting pulled because of his glove and now getting pulled because of his bat. In a clutch situation. In favor of a guy who is literally not hitting his weight.

Just a reminder that there is a history of odd events long before Oli. Take 2016, when they wanted Carpenter to be the second baseman so they sent Wong down to Triple-A in the middle of the season to learn center field. Another head scratcher that failed…

The only person paying attention to the wonk room, is you bling.

Oli clearly is not wonk friendly, after two seasons. The lineups and game management all point to Oli managing by his gut, not the numbers.

Mo does what he wants. You think the wonk room endorses Walker in the OF?

The only wonk friendly trait Oli had was the lineup stagger, and he has abandoned that two games in a row now.

I heard Horton call reverse splits by the name of negative splits yesterday. An ex-mlb pitcher / announcer can’t even get the terminology right.

Wonkdom in our org barely exists on the playing field. It’s a talking piece, much like you use it. We are extremely poor and undisciplined at applying analytics and that is not the fault of the wonk room. It’s the applying part that is lacking.

Yesterday had numerous “seat of his pants” examples, and they are the same Oli decisions that you are questioning.

Funny you should mention that. As I was watching the game, my partner came into the room. She couldn’t get over how odd Fernandez’ uniform looked on him. She was focused on his right shoulder, saying it looked like his arm was attached about a foot lower than it should have been. Take that for what it’s worth!

Every time I see the patch, all I think of is Stifler.

Absolutely they so. It is a classic fantasy ball move to get all the offense into the lineup. Walker, Arenado and Goldschmidt all in there. Gorman to second, Edman to center. Donovan’s an outfielder now. Get all the bats in there.

That’s funny Brian! I didn’t actually watch yesterday’s game so I just made up the “tailor” part. Glad to see that it fit (or didn’t fit in this case . . . Ok, bad pun).

Uh-huh, offense sells tickets, that’s Bill and Mo.

The wonk room sees -2.1 career war for Walker, and they can point right at the problem, and the solution.

It’s the applying it part that’s lacking. Although analytics is a convenient scapegoat, as you know.

Regarding Walker, it seems that giving up on your top 5 prospect, 21 year old quickly would send a pretty bad message, whether the wonks are behind it or not. I’d imagine it’ll work itself out with him either at 1B or DH going forward, but the downside for a mediocre team is pretty negligible as to whether you get 0 or 2 WAR from your RF.

Walker made a very nice catch the other day. I don’t think he will be given up on as an outfielder any time soon.

For me, the wonk speculative story line, as it is heavily and indiscriminately applied to anything one doesn’t like, has become so overused and tired it is long past the point having any discussion value to me. It has become a cliche’. If the players just played better, one would not have to try to guess to assign blame as to why they aren’t.

Noot gets there and runs through that catch. No bonus points for making routine look more difficult. Is that improvement for Walker? Yes.

Walker leads off for me. I’m not a Walker hater.

Every teams analytic room wants to optimize the roster. I’d like to see our management get behind it too, but they seem to have different priorities.

Some guys get a lot of mileage out of turning plays they should make into highlight reel material. It’s not a bad promotional strategy.

Even when they are good, they are not, really. And so it goes…

It is only six games, but Baseball Reference has Walker at a 0.0 Defensive Wins Above Replacement. That compares to -2.1 last year.

Fangraphs has his defense at +0.1 versus -21.9 in 2023.

    But predetermined notions are set…
