They have to do things that they think will make the game more appealing to younger people. I’m sure that MLB has done studies to find out what might work to engage them in baseball.
With these rule changes there ought to be a lot more high scoring games, and a lot more back and forth leads. There will likely be batters who will stop swinging for the fences all the time because they have been fed up with forever hitting into the shift. There will be more stolen bases because there will be more runners on base because of their higher averages…. and the bigger bases ought to help with the stolen base somewhat, also. There should be more double plays, too, because of more runners on base and more batters just trying to hit the ball rather than drive it into the bleachers. And there will still be plenty of home runs. Of course, this is all guesswork. We’ll have to wait and see how it actually plays out.

Haha gscott. Gio sure makes it gut wrenching with his pace. Maybe it’ll have a counter effect, though. Some of these over-thinkers will just have get on with it and won’t be able to mentally ice themselves like a coach does to a kicker in football with a timeout. There’s probably a fine line between taking a deep breath to calm yourself and clear your mind versus icing yourself.
Love the 5-bagger but would make it a 6 bagger instead and put the hitter on 2nd instead of at first.
Better yet make the 5 bagger automatic and when the hitter crosses hone plate if he can correctly answer a baseball trivia question he gets the 6 bagger and the crowd can help! Talk about engaging the fans!!
Would also add yellow cards and red cards like in soccer. So, if the first baseman trips runner as he’s rounding first may be thinking about stretching his hit to a double he gets a yellow card and will be tossed if he does it again.
Red carded players cannot be replaced and their spots in the line up become automatic strikeouts for the rest of the game.
ZTR…Yeah, the 5 bagger rule is long overdue and if baseball was genuinely concerned about putting more fans in the seats, they’d offer both of us a place on the rules committee.
It’s unclear to me precisely who are these “fans” clamoring for dramatic rule changes. Sure I sometimes weary of a slow, low scoring contest, but that doesn’t mean I want to solve the problem of an occasional annoyance by changing the nature of the game. Furthermore we, or at least I, haven’t heard nearly enough from the players on the subject.

It is probably the folks who spend most of their time at the game staring at their iphone or the ones who change the channel every five minutes if there isn’t enough “action.” Low attention spans.

I am not sure how the pitch clock correlates to the NBA 24 second clock, as was brought up earlier. Nor how it “ruined the game.” The 24 second clock has been around for what, 65 years or more? If it ruined the game, the NBA would have gone under years ago.
I don’t think bigger bases will lead to more steal attempts. Stealing is just not in vogue anymore in the analytics era. Plus, doesn’t a bigger base mean a slightly shorter throw from the catcher? I don’t see much advantage there.
The shift ban is probably a good thing. It has been around forever, but was never widely used until the last 10 years or so. What would be better than a total ban, would be to add some strategy and limit the shift, but not ban it. Say give each team 2 or 3 shift opportunities.
Do you burn a shift in the fifth inning, when you are facing a bases loaded, two out situation and Matt Carpenter at bat in a 2-2 game? Or do you hang on to it and take your chances, saving it for later in the game when outs are becoming more precious, and you may want it for consecutive hitters?
I’m surprised umpires, players and managers can keep up with all these rule changes without the assistance of a law library in the dugout. At any rate, I really like the idea of “bigger bases” only because it’s exceptionally laughable.
Like a borderline penalty and a field goal deciding the Super Bowl?

Breaking: MLB’s Joint Competition Committee has voted unanimously to make the extra inning rule permanent for all regular season games moving forward. (2023 and beyond). A runner will be placed at second base at the start of every extra inning. Story coming at espn

With this rule now firmly in place, it’s imperative that teams place a tremendous amount of emphasis on the ability to lay down a sac-bunt or hit to the right side. That baserunner standing on 2B has to be moved up and placed at 3B with 1 out. I’d expect more than a little bonus drill time devoted to this portion of the game in ST’ing.
Well I knew it was eventually going to be made permanent. Really sucks how they are changing the game. Pretty soon MLB is going to be almost extinct on my tv about the way the NBA and the NFL mostly are now.
I remember baseball from the sixties when it was “real” baseball. All of these changes are turning the game into s_ _t. Next will be multi-ball.
You almost have to think that the mindset is once they’ve got your money they’d like to see you leave as soon as is possible so that they too can go home.
If they really think that people don’t want to sit at the ballpark for any extended amount of time, why do they keep the gates locked until about an hour prior to first pitch when not too long ago my ticket allowed me entry at least two and a half hours before game time so I could enjoy batting practice, OF long tosses, IF drills, mingling and talking with other baseball fans and seeing the look of amazement on my son’s face as he marveled at the Big Leaguers honing their skills? I genuinely think this concept that proclaims baseball fans don’t want to spend time at the ballpark is a short con…
