Brian, I am really enjoying your podcasts with Blake! In a future episode, would you touch on potential Rule 5 draft potentials and who might get left off that list? I know there are a bunch of players eligible this year that could be on the bubble, maybe more in the minor league phase. I would love to hear what you and Blake think about these players and why.

I’ll write quite a bit about it in a couple weeks. I want to give as much time as possible to our minor league players before I make guesses about all the moves that will be made. I’ll leave it to Brian to guess as well. I’m sure he will have a list of every minor league AAA protection, which I’m not currently planning to go after.
All of these moves then naturally will lead into roster construction for next season. Trades are much harder to guess at (although I know many will try).

I was stunned that Cornwell was mentioned in a positive way.
Which reminds me to ask if there is any word on why Cornwell left after the 1st Thursday. I can’t believe they were just chomping at the bit to get Mills some more work.
More talk about how the Cardinals might use the AFL as just a season extension to get some upper level injury returns some more work. I hate that. It denies young standouts the acknowledgement and a chance to try their stuff against premium competition.

I wonder how many fans are thinking he’s already in left field in low A so playability is going to be an issue. Probably none. I doubt the Cardinals development folks are either. I’m out here in the real world all by myself again.

One thing to note on the pitching rank vs hitting that I didn’t hear in the podcast…the Cardinals have 3 pitcher’s parks in their system, which certainly would suppress offense overall and boost the pitching. I would be curious to see how the total runs scored vs allowed has trended over the last few years. Nonetheless, I can agree that the pitching side of the prospect ledger looks stronger than the hitting at this point.
Another factor I did not think of until afterward is that some systems have more minor league teams so total runs is not the best comparative measure across systems. So the absolute ranking should not be taken, but still the Cards were subpar in runs scored and very good in runs allowed. That is my takeaway.

That’s fair. There appears to be some much needed pitching on the way. The majority of the young hitting talent is already in the majors. There will need to be some advancement from guys like Wetherholt, Crooks and Davis to bolster the lineup.

Brian – You seem to be disappointed by the Cardinals just wanting to get into the playoffs and seeing what can happen from there. Maybe get lucky,
be healthy, and ride a momentum wave.
Not necessarily have an MV3. But isn’t that pretty much the way the Cards will have to go? There are 10 teams now with a total payroll over $200 million. The Cards need to have the minor league system produce players that can be solid up and down the ML lineup and on the pitching staff.
Rely on consistency. Which I believe is your primary area of interest and expertise. Seems like they’re playing right into TCN hands.When your bar is set to the lowest possible level, just making the playoffs, you are going to miss more often than not. Specifically, they have five misses in the last nine years, including two in a row.
And even when you do make it, because your talent level is wild-card, not championship-contending, you are usually immediately eliminated. Specifically, the Cardinals were bounced without a series win in three of the four post-season years.
In the weakest division in baseball, St. Louis did not finish in first place in seven of the last nine years.
So yes, winning just one post-season series in nine years, with the current trend downward, is disappointing…
The proverbial bar may be set lower than that. After a last place 20 games under even finish in ’23, the goal seems to be to tread enough water to finish at or near sea level. “Hey, we ended up a few games above .500 after a last place finish, so stop complaining and line up to buy your season tickets or we’ll really show you how bad it can get!” In a couple of days we should hear about the outstanding job the Cardinal manager did this season…
If the trend is downward, what’s the answer if you can’t compete with the big budget teams? It has to be in the minor league system. And in the young players at the major league level.
Why has Winn done well while Walker, Gorman, and Carlson struggled? Major league pitchers finding weaknesses and the players not being coached up to handle those adjustments? In my opinion, we have some really solid young position player talent in
Winn, Walker, Gorman, Burleson, Nootbaar, Herrera, Donovan, Wetherholt, Davis, Crooks, etc. There’s enough talent right threat to go deep into October if it’s developed properly.GameCard – We’re just dovetailing off Wednesdays with Walton, which are very interesting. Don’t you think?
