bb…that is a ludicrous thing to say.
November 21, 2023 at 12:08 pm #237792I like Descalso and have that same “gut feeling” about him that gscottar does. But given my preference I would prefer a more seasoned bench coach to bounce off ideas and strategies with the young manager. Maybe someone like a Dave McKay-type guy.
But Descalso seems like the type of player and person that will make a good coach and possibly manager.

It is consistent with the manager and coaching staff moves over the last couple years. I agree that is ludicrous.
November 30, 2023 at 6:17 pm #238651I just saw on X where Molina will not coach the Cardinals in 2024. Instead be some sort of special advisor.

December 6, 2023 at 12:48 pm #239110This is news only if folks missed Molina’s announcement last week. I guess the Cardinals had to do something at the Winter Meetings…
Welcome back, Yadi!

December 6, 2023 at 1:27 pm #239117So what does Yadi do?
December 6, 2023 at 1:50 pm #239120So what does Yadi do?
Not sure but I guess he will chat with Mo a few times a week providing input then wait and see if Ollie is retained for 2025. I think Yadi wants to be a manager.
December 6, 2023 at 2:07 pm #239125Yadi will prevent the front office from trading Edman
December 6, 2023 at 4:27 pm #239144Looking over Marmol’s shoulder, but not every day…
Yadier Molina will be in uniform in the dugout at times during the season, even though that’s not his full time role, Mo said. Will do some work with the affiliates but primarily focused on the big league team, assisting both players and imparting knowledge on coaches.

December 6, 2023 at 4:41 pm #239147#STLCards POBO John Mozeliak said the initial talks with Yadier Molina about rejoining the club centered around a full-time assistant coach job. When Molina indicated that he didn't want that kind of commitment because of family concerns, the talks shifted into an advisory role.

December 6, 2023 at 5:00 pm #239153Hard to understand how he wouldn’t have the same family concerns even if the job was manager.
December 6, 2023 at 5:26 pm #239161Edman will NOT be traded….
December 6, 2023 at 6:01 pm #239165Haha!…He would have the same concerns, BW, but if he’s the Cardinal manager, he moves his entire family to a new house in Creve Coeur or Illinois.

Brings about an interesting dynamic given the legend of Yadi. Not sure if unintended consequences should be a worry.
December 6, 2023 at 10:09 pm #239190I think Yadi is around to improve the clubhouse vibe and teach Contreras how to call a game.
December 6, 2023 at 11:05 pm #239192If Marmol is fired during the season I hope and pray Molina is NOT the new manager.

December 7, 2023 at 7:26 am #239200I wouldn’t be surprised if one of the reasons Molina was hired was to keep him from working for another team.
December 7, 2023 at 7:48 am #239201It’ll be interesting to see if having Yadi around will cause more or fewer problems for Marmol. One could imagine that sparks could fly if the team struggles and Yadi isn’t too thrilled with the captain’s direction.

I think being named manager would be a totally different scenario. A person can be willing to make more personal sacrifices for a job that they really want.
December 7, 2023 at 10:49 am #239235Perhaps so, gscottar. But if I am the person doing the hiring, I would still be concerned about the possibility of him giving less than 100% focus on the job.
December 8, 2023 at 5:22 am #239272It will be interesting to see how much Yadi is around during ST.

It sure will, Blingster. Vaqueros de Bayamon. That’s the wild card in all of this. Any ML team hiring Yadi should have a “No VDB” clause inserted into the contract. “VDB” not referring to the Lincoln cent designer, Victor David Brenner. Remember those whirlwind “business trips” back to Puerto Rico that Yadi indulged in back in ’22 to watch his Puerto Rican basketball team? If Yadi left his team high & dry as a player to watch a bunch of ham & eggers shoot hoops, then you better believe he’ll be going AWOL often as a “special assistant”. We’ll see Yadi making a cameo visit a time or two in the Cards dugout this coming season, but that’s probably about it.
December 9, 2023 at 6:17 pm #239488This is a really good read.
How strong, existing bonds brought Daniel Descalso back to be Cardinals' new bench coach https://t.co/HbDElMs5H1

December 10, 2023 at 9:48 am #239522A different view of the same article. Extending the current popular narrative that experience doesn’t matter all that much anymore. Coupling the manager with his twin from another mother is lauded while being “seasoned” is suggested to be old and outdated.
So of all the people involved with 2023, Joe McEwing is the one to take the fall!
What Daniel Descalso’s hiring tells us about how #Cardinals view the bench role and its change from the cliche seasoned strategy sage …
They don’t want Yoda.
They want Luke. https://t.co/0nNypioxiy— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) December 10, 2023
December 10, 2023 at 11:48 am #239529It has always been my opinion that an organization as storied as the Cardinals should never have to hire a rookie manager. Doing it three times in a row boggles the mind. Now we have a young manager and a rookie bench coach.
Having said that, I have a good feeling about Descalso. I can’t quite put my finger on it but I have a feeling he will be a manager one day. Time will tell. One thing I did not know was that Descalso and Marmol were middle infield teammates at Batavia.
