I posted this on the Reyes comments:

I just wish that Reyes would play up to his potential. If he does it would be like trading for a much needed starting pitcher and I’d rather see him do that in a St.Louis uniform. 2023 will determine his fate with the Cards.

    Ditto for Liberatore.

1 or 2 starts does not make him ready. He is looking better, but still needs more innings in aaa.
Give him another 5-6 starts and then re-evaluate; and he may then be needed with the team.

Liberatore’s period of marked improvement is longer than 1-2 starts.

This season, he has three starts with a 24/7 K/BB ratio and just 10 hits and 2 runs allowed in 17 innings. ERA 1.06, WHIP 1.00, batting average against .175.

In big league camp this spring, he was almost as good. 1.80 ERA, 9/1 K/BB in 10 IP, WHIP 0.80, BAA .206.

In terms of needing more Triple-A innings, he has already thrown 256 2/3 innings at the level. How many more do you think he needs and why?

(As a point of comparison, Woodford has 292 2/3 Triple-A innings.)

Pirates in StL might be a good spot to bring him up and give him a start…

Libby is going to have to prove he’s not an AAAA pitcher eventually. If Woody is roughed up again I’d not be opposed to bringing Matt up for a run at it.

Liberatore absolutely needs to be back up in STL. He would probably be our number 3 starter right now behind Monty and Jack.

Liberatore 3 GS – Game Scores = 65-66-66. He might be MLB ready now…. he’s done with AAA.

As it stands now, who would he replace?

So, Libratore’s promoted and the rotation consists of 3 members who are LHP’ers? Highly unusual for any team and I can’t recall in my lifetime when that’s been the case for the Cardinals. Not trying to create the impression that there’s anything wrong with it, but it would be really rare.

Its not just the innings, its command and being consistent.

stlcard25. Your really think Woody was roughed up his last outing..??
If we had a average LF in the game, then the fly ball gets caught and the 2 runs do not score. Any other Cardinal OF would have caught that.. except Burly or Yepez, both of whom should not be in the field, should only by DH or 1st. So if this ball was caught, Woody gives up 1 run in 5 innings!
    explain that being roughed up..???

With 2 leftys already in rotation, I agree with 1td. He is better off honing his craft where he is, and stays ready to come up when needed.. or if Cabby reverts back to his 2022 form, then bring LIbby up into the pen.

So you can have 3 righties but not 3 lefties?

I’m not saying you can’t have 5 LHP’ers in a rotation. In fact, 5 ambies would be ideal…Haha!

I’m sure a lot of folks on here saw Jim Abbott pitch. The guy won 18 games one season. You really have to admire a person like that. I still think watching him work was one of, if not the most, amazing things I’ve ever seen in all of sports. He really was something.

Liberatore is putting pressure on the current MLB starters. Right now I would think that Woodford needs to be better in his next two starts, or he may be the odd man out.

Mikolas has been lousy, but they won’t demote him unless injury is the contributing factor. And with his history that could happen.

IMO, Woodford should get one more start. If he doesn’t do well against the Pirates, then he gets demoted, and Liberatore replaced him.

It doesn’t matter to me if he his LH or RH as long as he can get outs, which we desperately need.

Interesting thought about having 3 lefties in the rotation. There might be an advantage against a predominantly left handed hitting team. Milwaukee comes to mind. Especially if Woodford struggles the next few starts.
