I enjoy St. Louis when I visit. I usually kick around the arch area during the day and head over to the ball park for an evening contest. Have done that every few years since the ‘80s.
It seems downtown ballparks have revitalized the area when they are built in an urban locale. Ballparks out in suburbia are a bit too “stale” for my preference – like the park in Kansas City. Give me a downtown stadium surrounded by many sports themed bars and clubs, and every summer night is a big party. The Rockies don’t win a lot, but downtown around the stadium is a fun-filled circus whenever a home game is played.

I think St. Louis is on the verge of becoming a destination city. Homicides are down 23% in St. Louis proper, and there’s reason to expect the crime rate will further improve. There are several multi-billion dollar mixed use developments in progress, or planned. One is downtown to the south of the Arch, another at Brentwood and Manchester, another where the old Chesterfield mall was located, another at Olive and Hwy. 170, and another at Dorsett and Hwy. 270. The tech corridor near St. Louis University is booming. Tickets for a St. Louis City SC game are nearly impossible to get. (I know someone who bought season tickets for standing room only.) A listing of why St. Louis is up and coming could be pretty lengthy. But the most important reason why St. Louis is a great place is that it’s a place that still holds, for the most part, traditional American values. With that, young couples who want to raise kids have a better chance of their kids not being embued with somebody’s political/social narrative instead of the things kids are supposed to learn in school. In other words, St. Louis is pretty good place to raise a family. Add to all of this that the Cardinals do, apparently, have a reasonable chance to sign Yamamoto and that they might even be able to swing a deal with the White Sox, and you have to be impressed.

Beganovic’s article confirms what I’ve said for years. No matter how bad the Cardinals are, there will still be 3 million plus buying tickets. There is no reason for Junior to panic and spend. If they finish last in 2024 they will still draw over 3 million. Junior owns the best team in baseball if the goal is to make millions in profit every year. Spoiler alert: That is Junior’s goal.
