As I said in a post a couple of months ago Mo will sign 2 or 3 bottom of the rotation guys and that will be it! Here is number 2! One more to go and we STILL don’t have a number 1 or 2! The only good thing about this is we will be a bottom feeder again and surely Dewitt will toss Mo and Ollie to the curb!

Everyone is entitled to an honest, personal reaction and perceived ramifications concerning each move Mo makes.
I like both signings, and we can all take heart in that it is a staff, not a group of individuals. Would any of lasts year’s bullpen arms benefitted from the third and fourth starters throwing 380 innings. Would that have lowered the staff era? Could adding two innings eaters sharpen the pen to the point that the staff era goes down?

The bullpen had a lower ERA than the starters last year.

Which is better, a guy coming off Tommy John who will likely give you 120-150 innings of sub-4.00 ERA ball (Ryu), or a guy who pitched 180 innings of 5.73 ERA ball?

Lance Lynn got $11 million coming off a year where he pitched to a 5.73 ERA…

Lynn’s value is that he threw 183 innings last year. Matz’s first two years as a Cardinals has produced 48 innings and 105 innings.

I would be OK with getting the #1 and #2 at the deadline. Get guys who are healthy at that point, like in 2022. But we do have to be good enough to make post.

Monty and Q were good enough. We lost game 1 because our bronze busts didn’t show up. It was a mistake not starting Monty in game 2, but we lost because of poor pen use and our bronze busts didn’t show again.

    Just let it play out.

Sorry brah, but we’ve seen this movie and it’s multiple sequels before. This franchise isn’t serious about winning. This is piss poor on any measurable metric. It’s malpractice and insulting, but anything but shocking. It’s par for the course and old.

Gibson got 12M. Innings eaters yep with a lot of traffic. WHIP: Lynn 1.394 Gibson 1.318 Hits/Innings Lynn 198/192 Gibson 189/183. Ugh Do not like either signing. Rather a better pitcher for the 23M. But I see a lot people here like this so to each his own.

Maybe they can find another 36 yr old innings eater for the trifecta.

BW, I think, unless I’m wrong, they now employ three of the top eight overall in hits allowed last season. That’s a whole lot of base runners just waiting to score. And just when you didn’t think it could get any worse, they paid more for the opportunity to make it worse. SMH…

By Thanksgiving evening Gibson will be picked clean to the bones along with our turkeys…. and along with Mozeliak.

    disappointing

i’d rather see one pitcher for 23 and let Zach get the last spot..

hopefully we arent done…and we are in on a big SP

even a trade for one of the SEA kids wont move the needle for the rotation

Yamamoto feels the only option if we are looking at anything resembling a rotation that can win

As I’ve said before…..something tells me the next few years might be some pretty bad years for the Redbirds. Nothing seems to be working.

Soon we will be like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati have been for the last several years for the most part.

Someone asked Moz about Yamamoto i think….he did not say no even when 200m was referred to i think…said something about terms…

I am sure Brian or someone else can find it…i think it is on Twitter

Yeah, but we have three #4’s and a #5

I would say the way Matz pitched for most of last year he is a 6 or a 7.

Should one assume that these 1-year deals for Lynn and Gibson are due to Graceffo, McGreevy, and Hence? Do the Redbirds feel like these three will be ready in 2025?

So does anyone here think the Cardinals “crack” Analytics Staff has put together a game plan to improve the performance of Lynn and Gibson? The Dodgers seem to have success with developing plans for a guys they acquire.

Rats, that is a question to which no one knows the answer. It could just as easily be worry about falling revenues when Bally Sports implodes.

“Maybe they can find another 36-yr-old innings eater for the trifecta.”

Maybe Jake Arrieta is available. He’s only 37. This would satisfy the apparent twin goals of accumulating bad pitchers on the wrong side of 35 and also grabbing as many members of the 2016 cubs as possible. Sigh.

It’s one thing to finish last when you’re honestly trying to combine winning with profit maximization. That can happen, especially with a terrible manager. But to actively betray Cardinal fans with these two no-upside signings is a disgrace.

All those fans who bought tickets but simply didn’t bother to show up last year in June, July, and later? They ain’t buying those tickets in the first place this year. Because ownership/management is truly acting in bad faith now. You accrue 4th/5th starters and you’ll wind up in 4th/5th place.

To my eyes, for the first time since Whitey walked through the door more than 40 years ago, the front office is placing a MUCH higher priority on profit than winning. And in doing so, they are going to cost themselves tons of money. Pound foolish.

Wow, talk about old home week. First we bring Lynn back, and now Gibson! We got our ace!! Oh wait, you mean this is not Bob Gibson, but “Kyle” Gibson – a lifetime .500 pitcher with a mid 4s era? Oh well, at least the last name is legendary. Maybe that alone will up his performance.

I’m guessing that the season ticket renewals are just not coming in the way they have for years, so next year’s payroll budget has been cut back. If that is, in fact the case, then MO is being smart by getting decent pitching while he still can. Also, when you look at the demands for No 2 and No 3 pitchers like Logan Gilbert and Dylan Cease, it looks like the trade market is not sensibly workable, either. The good news for the Cardinals is that they have a bevy of promising young pitchers right on the horizon, and a stacked lineup going forward.

Another thing is that by not spending big money for free agent pitchers, they should have plenty of cash available to extend Goldschmidt after the 2024 season. Personally, I’d like to see Goldy retire wearing a Cardinal uniform.
