Jeff Albert as elected not to return as hitting coach. Mike Maddux is stepping down as pitching coach.
“We have a lot of openings,” Mozeliak says.#stlcards

October 26, 2022 at 12:14 pm #205477Maddux just wanted a change. Albert could have returned but felt outside blame was directed at him.
Also, bullpen coach Bryan Eversgerd is being reassigned in the organization as a special assistant.
So, with the bench coach, Marmol’s staff has four openings.
October 26, 2022 at 12:15 pm #205478So Albert felt it was fan pressure, or that management was blaming him?
October 26, 2022 at 12:19 pm #205479Outside pressure. Albert was offered a new contract, but declined.
October 26, 2022 at 12:27 pm #205480I thought it was a good possibility that Jeff Albert may be forced to resign, but I’m surprised that Maddux is gone too. Obviously upper management and ownership learned a valuable lesson from the PR hit that they took when they canned Shildt, so they orchestrated a different script for this personnel change. These guys know what they’re doing.
October 26, 2022 at 12:29 pm #205482Mo said that Albert had “frustration” about the frequency with which he “took blame” for the team’s offensive struggles and mentioned the tenor of social media comments as a factor in that frustration.

October 26, 2022 at 12:33 pm #205483Haha…Johnny says this and Johnny says that…Then Johnny places the focus on social media. That’s a good one!
October 26, 2022 at 12:56 pm #205484I thought Maddux did a pretty good job. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s having a phone conversation with Bochy…

ParticipantAlbert needed to go. Time for some new thoughts. How about Jim Edmonds?
October 26, 2022 at 1:02 pm #205487I can hear it now…”Yeah, we had our new hitting coach work with him over the winter and we’re really encouraged by his progress. DeJong will be our starting SS for the ’23 opener”…
October 26, 2022 at 1:26 pm #205493Is Marmol next, making it a clean sweep?
October 26, 2022 at 1:29 pm #205494There’s philosophy going on.
October 26, 2022 at 2:11 pm #205499There’s philosophy going on.
Couldn’t agree more. I think this is more the front office making coaches not want to stay because you have to drink up all their kool-aid. Be hard for Edmonds or Chris Carpenter or whoever to want to come coach these guys when you’re just having to following what the suits are saying and not your own beliefs.
October 26, 2022 at 2:21 pm #205500This seems an opportune time to remind folks that
1. There are very good coaches in the world who were not also coincidentally your favorite baseball players when you were little.
2. Sometimes really rich and famous guys want to sit on their butts for a while after they retire.

October 26, 2022 at 2:21 pm #205501So, this was all a result of the critisism and pressures created by social media? Here’s a direct quote from the local St. Louis newspaper…”Mozeliak flew out to SoCal to meet with Arenado, who is still mulling his options. Arenado wanted some answers about the Cardinals plans to improve in 2023 and get back into the postseason hunt. Mozeliak believes a decision, which must be made within five days of the World Series’ conclusion, is coming soon.”
October 26, 2022 at 2:23 pm #205502BW…Sometimes really rich and famous guys are too smart to work for a guy who talks out of both sides of his mouth…
October 26, 2022 at 2:27 pm #205503We are going to have to disagree. I think the Cardinals are a very desirable destination for coaches. The last four bench coaches became managers, for example.
As to reasons particular guys are interested or not interested in open jobs, no one other than them knows, so why inject personal biases into it?
October 26, 2022 at 2:27 pm #205504Bench Coach
Hitting Coach
Pitching Coach
Bullpen CoachMo is going to be busy this winter. Hopefully he adds Catcher, Outfielder, and Elite Starter to the list.
October 26, 2022 at 2:28 pm #205505I wonder if guys like Jim Edmonds and Matt Holliday will be serious candidates?
October 26, 2022 at 2:29 pm #205506BW…Well, I agree that the Cardinals are a very desirable destination for coaches. Just not rich and famous ones.
October 26, 2022 at 2:37 pm #205508gscottar…I’d be highly surprised if either one of those guys would take the job if it was offered to them.
October 26, 2022 at 2:46 pm #205511BW…It’s not personal bias. It’s a compliment and I admire him. John Mozeliak is the maestro of double-speak. It’s the primary reason he’s so good at his job and has survived as long as he has. I’m also entirely certain that his unsurpassed expertise in that area is the principal reason his boss holds him in such high esteem.
October 26, 2022 at 3:49 pm #205515Its highly unusual for a couple of coaches to just quit. Leaving for a promotion somewhere or fired is how it happens. If they really did just quit, its worthy of an eyebrow raise.
October 26, 2022 at 4:02 pm #205516Bling…I think so too. I also think it’s inane to think they they would attribute Jeff Albert’s exit to the outside pressures of the crticism present in social media circles. I mean, if he’s indeed that incredibly thin skinned, why would any organization even consider taking him onboard in the first place?
October 26, 2022 at 4:07 pm #205517bling, seems a little different to me too.
