Ozuna came up as a RFer and has a cannon. He is the obvious choice to play over there over Pham and Fowler.

Have any of the beat writers, who have regular access to the few who really know, written about this? (Goold, Hummel, Jen L, etc.) Ben is a columnist who covers many sports and VEB, while a fine blog, has no media credentials as far as I know.

I will make a note to ask Matheny at WWU this weekend.

I’d be pretty aggravated if they only chose the positions to placate Fowler in their decision.

Nice analysis Jag. My only nitpick would be that Gant is not the only option to replace Lyons as long man. We could easily see Flaherty/Reyes/Hudson or other candidates if Gant doesn’t step up.

CC…thanks… you are right about Gant not being the only option…i only used him because he seemed to get that time on the big league club last year…making me think that is his role now

but you are right the fall off might not be as great should we go to another choice as you mentioned

Jenifer Langosch gives a projected lineup. She has Ozuna in LF and Fowler in RF.

Back to the title of the thread, Cards still listed as one of six suitors for Arrieta.

Say no to Arrieta. That would made very angry if they sign him.

    Speculation from Heyman regarding Darvish.

Because he is older and not that good anymore. You might as well have kept Lynn. Younger and probably cheaper.

Lynn will definitely be younger and cheaper but probably not better. The question is if Arrieta/Darvish’s extra production worth the extra cost?

I was watching some Russo commentary on MLB network yesterday. He could not have been more decisive about saying “no” to Darvish, saying that he is totally not worth the money he is asking for.

I agree with NJ…. Lynn is still a very good option and Arrieta isn’t.

Depends on the money. Let’s say it would take 4 years $17M for Lynn and 5 years $22M for Arrieta. Is the extra $5M and extra year worth it? I think so but it isn’t my call. I actually believe Darvish is better than both of them and will get the biggest contract. I heard Mad Dog’s bit yesterday. I don’t agree with him on that one.

The most prudent approach might be to sign a low cost fifth starter to give us some innings until our Memphis guys are ready. Someone like Hellickson, Cashner, etc…

I wasn’t suggesting to sign Lynn. If not a top the line starter which there is no free agent now why sign a second tier pitcher for a lot of money? If that was the plan all along they should have signed Lynn last season.

Right now we have five starters. Who are we placing to start the season?

I didn’t say sign a second tier pitcher for a lot of money. I said we might consider a low cost option. We could probably get Hellickson or Cashner for one year at at between $5M to $8M. That isn’t a huge investment to bide some time until the Memphis guys are ready.

We currently have Martinez, Wacha, Wainwright, Weaver, and Mikolas. We are losing 340 innings from Lynn and Leake. Are those five guys plus Gant, Flaherty, etc… going to make up the difference? Sounds like a big ask to me.

MLB teams are using the BP more and more, they’ll be taking on innings, plus add in Mikolas’ innings and more out of Weaver and Wainwright, plus spot starts from #6.

To think we are going to get more innings out of Wainwright seems like a bad gamble to me.

    From Buster Olney:

If Jake Arrieta ever gets to point where he defers pursuit of long-term deal in this slow market, there are teams very interested in discussing high-salary short-term deal with him.

It used to be that only the player’s agents would use the media pundits to help them get their way. Now, it seems, at least one organization is trying to do the same thing. This is clearly a signal to Arrieta that reaches past his agent, and offers him a two or three year deal if he will take it.

My guess is that the signal is not to Arrieta. The teams have almost certainly already told his agent the same thing and one would expect the agent to be briefing the player. This is to try to get fan sentiment on their side, in my estimation.

In a general sense, teams leaking info can occur to let fans know their team is pursuit of top free agents. That can calm some down – until they finish second every time, that is! 😉

Thanks for your perspective. I appreciate it.
