Well Astros won the series but mariners gave them everything they could take, Cleveland beats the Yankees, Yankees have to win tomorrow to push it to 5. Dodgers ahead right now.
I should have said the Cards had the best overall record in the NL East in 1981 but didn’t win either half. It was a messed up season.
Pads slay the Dodgers to advance to the LCS against the Phillies. Right after the game, one of A-Rod’s first comments was interesting considering the Cardinals 1st wildcard game. He said you see it every year in the playoffs, teams pull a starter too early who is cruising, and it needs to stop. LA pulled Anderson after 5 shutout innings and the Pads broke through against the pen.
You need to play post season a little different than regular season. If you have a starter cruising along in post season, you need to be more patient with leaving him out there. In the regular season you are cognizant of wear and tear as the season rolls on. In post season, you have to ride what is working.
Hopefully Marmol took notes. He made a lot of questionable decisions in that first game, and they were questionable at the time, not just in hindsight.
Boy the Dodgers have a lot of questions this offseason.
Do they bring back Trea Turner?
Do they brink back Justin Turner?
Do they bring back Cody Bellinger?
Do they bring back Clayton Kershaw?
Is the Trevor Bauer fiasco ever resolved?As someone else mentioned in another thread I wouldn’t mind the Cardinals taking a look at Bellinger on a cheapish one year deal if he is non-tendered.
That’s why the play the games. If the highest seed always should win what’s the point of the post-season?
My question would be what’s the point of the regular season. I think MLB should take a serious look at reducing the schedule to between 140 and 150 games. The first round could be expanded to a best of 5 and all the ensuing rounds a best of 7. In baseball, a last place team has a reasonable chance to take 2 of 3 from a legitimate 100 win team at any given point in time. The old adage “It’s not who you play, it’s when you play them” clearly applies to these short series. If these rounds were expanded to more games, the laws of average would better take effect and clearly demonstrate who genuinely had the best ballclub. Heck, a best of 9 WS wouldn’t bother me one bit.
Then stop at the regular season and take each division winner rank the by record regardless of league and let’s see what happens. I don’t feel bad for the Dodgers, Mets, Braves and hopefully the Yankees will join them later tonight. Too bad the Astros are still in that was the one team I was hoping would be eliminated early. As far as the Cardinals go if they couldn’t beat an “inferior” team maybe they weren’t that much superior.
Philly was 4-2 vs. the Cardinals during the regular season. The 2 additional wins this Oct. served notice that they were harldy inferior. At 6-2 vs. the Cardinals, I’ll concede that Philly’s the better ballclub. However, I’ll maintain that a mere 3 game series in Oct. would leave me almost as unconviced as a 3 game series during March in ST between a practice squad and the opening day starting 9.
Harry Bader just yanked a wanger for the Yankees. 3-0 New York in the last of the 3rd. Win or go home for the Bronx Bombers.
If the Yankees survive to advance, Big Apple Baderade will be drink of choice over the venerable Manhattan in NY.
Yankees are liking what they are getting out of Harry Bader this post season.
It will be interesting a year from now to see how the deals for Montgomery and Quintana look. If Bader plays well in New York, Montgomery is average, Quintana walks, and Oveido matures into a solid starter those deals may look about like a lot of Mo’s deals of late – giving up more value than we get.
Not saying that will happen or is even likely, but what looked like two nice additions could even out and even flip in time.
BikeMike…I fully expect Quintana to return to career form next season which is a .500 pitcher. The Cardinals got a nice body of work out of him in the second half and the first game of the first round. I hope Jose realizes a big pay-off for his efforts. I just hope someone else besides the Cardinals sign his check. I don’t have any idea what Montgomery will look like in 3 or 4 years.
While I would have preferred the Cardinals have kept bader, I think in the end, it worked out for both. Montgomery was great and since he is under contract, hopefully will be great going forward. Bader has made a difference for the Yankees especially here in the playoffs. He’s one of those guys that can go on hot streaks and maybe this comes at the perfect time particularly if they move past this series. I think Houston has better pitching and will probably win but a hot bader could change that if judge and a couple others get going.

Another interesting post-game panel discussion, this time by the TBS crew. Ernie Johnson asked a question about the rest for the top 2 seeds perhaps being a detriment since the Braves & Dodgers lost, the Yankees are extended in a big fight, and the Astros had their struggles at the plate. He wondered if the teams who get byes next year will maybe change their routines during their rest period.
Jimmy Rollins, Curtis Granderson and Pedro Martinez all weighed in. The two hitters said they want to play everyday. They needed that to stay sharp and have their swings geared to hit the top pitchers. You need to be seeing the live competition version of things such as different spins, different releases, all the variety, and those things can’t be effectively duplicated in batting practice. They felt pitching is different and rest can be a good thing.
I hope some of the Cards decision makers took some notes so next year if they are fortunate enough to clinch early, they don’t go all country club with the position players like the last couple seasons.
MLB with the real clown hat on now thanks to the utterly foolish decision to chase the money. Two completely undeserving teams facing off for the NL “championship* is quite the egg on the face. The AL may yet hold serve, or at least will involve two division winners facing off.
Does this mean the super team is dead?
Why worry about a deep pitching staff? Just relax, grab a wc spot and pay 2 really good starting pitchers, setup, closer to do the job in short 3/5 game series….
Maybe to keep the hitters fresh they would have a few pitchers pitch a ‘pen session to the hitters. The pitchers not on the roster for the next series could go longer than those just needing work between appearances. You could even bring up a few minor leaguers. Make the pitching and at bats game like. That way hitters face situational live pitching and stay fresh.
I don’t think the Cardinals win the division without Montgomery and Quintana so I have zero regrets about those trades.

It does seem to give credence to the Cardinal philosophy of “just get in and see what happens” but yet it never seems to work for us. Not in the last decade anyway.
Why undeserving teams? They played the games and they won them. If you wanted the Braves vs the Dodgers and Yankees vs Astros, then do so. And the end of the season take division winners only. Give the bye to the top record and then play the two other winners. Good for the Phillies and Padres they may have not “deserved” it but they earned it.
