I think they are way more likely to keep Siani as the backup CFer (with Edman backing up SS) than to employ Fermin or the other two.
Even though they may be starting outfielders, Donovan and Edman are likely to get many innings in the infield.
Sinai, in over 2.200 minor league plate appearances, has slashed .244/.339/.361/.700. Very little to get excited about.

Many of you are probably aware that the Cardinals have had a starting CF’er who was orignally a Big League pitcher, but have the Cardinals ever in their entire history had a starting CF’er who was originally a Big League MI’er?
We have reason to argue about whether Siani or Firmin will make the opening day roster!! Good grief. That is sad.
My understanding is that Carlson injured his foot in May of 2023, and played through it the rest of the season. If Carlson is healthy and hitting well at spring training, then it’s easy to see Carlson in centerfield when a backup shortstop is needed, and Edman playing shortstop. They don’t need to carry Fermin as long as Edman is there. I’d like to find out if Baker’s power is real.
Matheny messed with moving Kolten Wong to centerfield for a little bit, and played him there for a few games. I remember thinking it was a bonehead decision, and I think Mike quickly came to the same conclusion as it did not last long.
I believe that Schumann played some infield in college, so it was more a case of moving him back there after many professional years in the OF.
None other than Mickey Mantle played SS in the Yankees’ minor league system before he got a chance to play in the Big Leagues and took over as the NY Yankees’ CF’er. Maybe little switch hitting Eddie will bulk up this winter prior to taking over as the primary Redbird CF’er…The Redbird manager could place him in the teeth of the order if he shows up in ST’ing with a pair of those Popeye forearms like The Mick used to sport. Little Eddie may tater up 50 times…

No, it isn’t. in 2022, when there was nothing wrong with his foot, Carlson hit .207 vs RHP over 347 PAs.
Well – reading through all of the above leads me to believe that the Cardinals are a few bricks shy of a load at SS and CF if Winn doesn’t come through at SS and / or if Winn, Carlson, or Edman are injured or don’t hit.
We appear to have 3 guys for 2 spots with Winn unproven, Edman coming off a surgery, and Carlson coming off an injury / underperforming season.
Yikes….

Yep, there are depth and bench concerns, but I do like trying to add Winn and Herrera to the Nootbar, Gorman, Donovan and Walker group, while the pitching is being renovated.
Oh for the days of set lineups. Not only does it help your lineup it helps your defense because players can get comfortable knowing where they are going to be. We have middle infielders playing the OF and DH’s playing OF and 2B. I wish we could name Whitey Herzog special assistant to the PBO while he is still alive. He would straighten Mo and the gang out.
Dylan Carlson is still only 25 years old, just turned 25 last October. I’m not quite ready to give up on his hitting yet. He could still figure it out. My biggest complaint about Carlson is that he doesn’t seem to play with a lot of enthusiasm. i could say more, but what I’m saying is so subjective that I think it’s better to not to say more.

The backup CFer is Carlson.The premise I was making was if Edman had to go back to the infield. In that scenario, your starting outfield is either:
Walker Carlson Nootbaar
Walker Nootbaar DonovanWith Siani and Burleson behind them. That is a better scenario than having Fermin or Young as the primary backups in the infield.
