They save a month of salary for up to 35 players and coaches. Until the past few years, players received no salary for extended spring training. Since teams have to pay them now, the partial solution was to cut a month of development out of every season.
Since they eliminated two entire levels not long ago, the primary motivation seems clear.
At this point, the FCL is essentially the next step up for graduated DSL players. Maybe next year with a few HS draftees this year they will have some domestic players. But I expect Condon to A ball.
If they do up the DSL age requirement, I honestly see the owners pushing to remove the FCL games and instead just have a reserve list with a few development coaches where players spend some time after the draft and maybe raw HS guys like Rocco spend part of the next year. Then DSL guys spend enough time there to go straight to A ball.
Not saying I would do this, but just looking at what the rookie leagues are now it feels like it is going to be cut one way or another. I assume that is the main thing owners want out of their proposed changes to the draft and international players.
That may be what happens even if they don’t require HS guys to go to college. Teams are drafting only less HS guys overall and I could see it continuing to where the only guys drafted out of HS are advanced players like Condon (I mistype his name everytime) that can go to A ball the next year.
Brian, what do you think the Cards do with the complex of they did get rid of the FCL? It would feel kind of odd timing to have just spent so much renovating the complex for the next year it to go away. I realize Spring Training uses it as well, but that doesn’t feel like the best return in investment for 2 months of use a year.
Palm Beach is there all season, too.
Plus, the Jupiter complex is the busiest facility in the US for youth tournaments.
Palm Beach County owns the complex and paid much of the renovation cost. The Cardinals and Marlins lease their parts.
Ah thanks for clarifying. I knew Palm Beach played in the same area, but I didn’t realize it was the same complex.
Palm Beach (Cardinals) and Jupiter (Marlins) play in the main stadium. The FCL teams play on the back fields.
Thats fine mudville. I just feel the player that earned more and has more now potential should get paid more now.
Moving development to colleges is so freaking shortsighted and ignorant.
Colleges are in the winning business and the college baseball season is only around 50-60 games. Single A teams play 130 games. A hitter in college is only going to see about 220 ABs whereas if he was in Single A he’s getting around 500 ABs. Player development is repetition. The more quality repetitions, the faster players improve.
MLB will continue to shoot themselves in the foot to save a buck. Its disgusting.
I have no problem with players going to college, i think all should. Just for the college experience alone and the fact if they have some brains they will use college to get an education. I dont think mlb should expect that they are going to fully develope there. Different thing.
Pallante had another good game last night (07-24-26) He stills needs maturity and confidence, IMO. I’m starting to think of him as a rotation NO. 2 eventually, or at lest a solid No. 3. I’m happy for the guy if he makes it. Too early to trade him.
We need to move May (think Matthews) and find a place for Liberatore unless Dobbins is already that player.
