Wetherholdt is the type of hitter whose OBP is wanting to exceed his SLG which in the past gets him an appointment with a guru to get fixed. It will be interesting to see him develop in the new upgraded system.
I have Crooks ahead of the other position players but behind McGreevy. I want to see if Crooks’s arm plays in AAA.
October 30, 2024 at 8:50 am #270825Teams that don’t have excessive money to spend have to work every angle. So I’d think that it’s worth at least trying to see what a player can do power wise, but I’d expect the Cards to let Wetherholt be more of what he will be. Sort of a Donovan with a little more natural pop.

ParticipantI like that Crooks played on the 2022 Oklahoma U. National runner-up team and that he was a big part of that feat. OU also won the Big 12 Championship. Since turning pro Crooks has advanced to AA and was Baseball America’s AA All-Star – Texas League MVP- Texas League post-season All-Star team. His stats have improved at each level. He’ll be ready for AAA in ’25 and depending on how the cards fall possibly some time in STL. His resume is very impressive. He’s my #2.
October 30, 2024 at 1:33 pm #270836JJ Wetherholt at #2 for me. Too much potential to ignore. He should have an impact on the team for many years.
October 30, 2024 at 6:46 pm #270846Weatherholt for me at #2. Looking forward to the conversation. I’ll probably be in and out.
October 30, 2024 at 9:09 pm #270892I will preface I very much like Crooks, but I do think that I sometimes get too excited by performance as that is what we can see via the stat output. At the end of the day though, it doesn’t matter what stats you put up in the minors as it matters what you do in the MLB. There is obviously some correlation between minors and MLB performance, but there are plenty of outliers both good and bad.
Trying to find some comparisons for prospects based off their stats. Crooks stats are a decent amount better, but X looks quite promising as well. Who is Catcher X? A hint, he is currently a FA.
Jimmy Crooks – .321/.410/.498/.908 – 51 SB, 25 CS, 22 years old in AA
Catcher X – .324/.371/.462/.833 – 13 SB, 13 CS, 22 years old in AAOctober 30, 2024 at 9:14 pm #270894Is there an easy to view leaderboard for an orgs minors players? I see some comparison of QS, and TCN’s #1 prospect Quinn Mathews I am fairly sure would be #1 in the Cards org with 14 QS (if I counted right).
October 30, 2024 at 9:17 pm #270895Fangraphs Leaderboards works the best for me to compare stats. They have minors stat leaders as well.

Wish that were true about our upcoming presidential election……Tuesday can’t get here quick enough. I haven’t tallied our votes yet, but hopefully McGreevy is in the driver’s seat here at #2.
October 31, 2024 at 10:41 am #270941We have strict controls to assure participants that we have a fair and timely election here, Pugs. UserID required, some working knowledge of the candidates and the results are right here soon after noon on the day voting ends. We strive for excellence here at TCN.
October 31, 2024 at 12:00 pm #270945The #2 prospect in the 2025 TCN Top Prospect Voting is JJ Wetherholt, 2B.
1. Quinn Mathews
2. JJ WetherholtVoting is now open for the #3 prospect. Voting will close at noon CT on Sunday, November 3rd.
October 31, 2024 at 3:46 pm #270962I struggled with #3. I said before that I had a virtual 3-way tie at 2 but I picked Wetherholt because of his bat and athleticism just being better. I could go either way with my next pick. I feel like Saggese and Crooks are virtually equal prospects. Saggese is a year younger and at a more advanced level. But Crooks is a catcher and seems to be strong all throughout the dimensions of his game. It looks like our forum will end up with either Crooks or McGreevey here. But I’m going to go with Saggese. I absolutely love this guy’s attitude and approach to the game. I think he’s going to be a fan favorite in the same way Edman was a favorite.
3. Saggese
October 31, 2024 at 3:49 pm #270963I thought there were only two full-season minor leaguers that really advanced their status in 2024 – Mathews & Crooks.
I am going Crooks @ #3.
October 31, 2024 at 3:52 pm #270964Trying to find some comparisons for prospects based off their stats. Crooks stats are a decent amount better, but X looks quite promising as well. Who is Catcher X? A hint, he is currently a FA.
Jimmy Crooks – .321/.410/.498/.908 – 51 SB, 25 CS, 22 years old in AA
Catcher X – .324/.371/.462/.833 – 13 SB, 13 CS, 22 years old in AAI’ll answer my question since no one guessed. The answer is Andrew Knizner and we all know how much of a dud he turned out to be offensively.
October 31, 2024 at 3:55 pm #270966#3 for me is Tink Hence. The other guys are utility (Saggese) or a position I’ll believe we get a top player when I see it (Crooks). Hence was dominant when he pitched, and I think he’ll probably start at Memphis. That’s just a hop, skip and a jump from helping out the big league club next season. Hopefully we see him.
October 31, 2024 at 4:37 pm #270969#3 Thomas Saggese
I think he could become a RH version of Brendan Donovan if he can get the K’s under control. I expect him to be on the STL roster on opening day.
October 31, 2024 at 4:56 pm #270971McGreevy
I guess I will continue to vote for him until I can’t. 😄
October 31, 2024 at 5:09 pm #270972LouisEu
ParticipantMy best three was JJW-QM-TH so….
my #3 is Tink HenceOctober 31, 2024 at 5:13 pm #270973Saggese is not an IF/OF UT like Donovan, but I agree he will probably make the team.
#3 McGreevy
October 31, 2024 at 5:17 pm #270974bccran
ParticipantMy vote is again for Jimmy Crooks. Mainly because he’s progressed well as a pro. JJ might be better in the long run, but he hasn’t proven himself yet.
October 31, 2024 at 7:49 pm #270981There is a clear top 3 in the system for me, with Hence being the bottom of the 3 just due to injury concerns. Hence’s changeup is ridiculous and his overall stuff is plus. He strikes out a lot and has good command. He needs to start working deeper into games, but he only just turned 22 and can build up more over time. Hence may never be a workhorse, but when you need 5 very good innings, he will likely be the go to guy. The upside here is so good that he deserves to be over more sure lower ceiling guys, and I feel quite confident most quality MLB orgs have the same thoughts.
#3 – Tink Hence
October 31, 2024 at 8:01 pm #270982I agree with stlcard25 that Saggase looks like a utility player. For that reason, I have him down at #11 on my list. The overall quality of our hitting prospects is quite bad at the moment, but I do have Wetherholt + 3 others above Saggase. Here is the blurb I had written for Saggase to post when I would vote for him, but based off other votes he will likely go much earlier than I would personally be putting a vote.
I am not as much of a believer in Saggase as many others and I hope I am wrong. Saggase doesn’t take walks, whiffs more than he should for his walk rate, and isn’t a good fielder. He has good pop for an undersized player, but I only see him as having a super util type player who posts a bad OBP with an average SLG. I am a little surprised to see so many thinking he should be handed the 2B job already. He didn’t perform well in the minors or majors this year, and scouts don’t love his tools either. He is still young at 22 and a util player is valuable, but I had to give the nod to players who have more of a chance of starting.
