    31. Petrutz – .344/.482/.433/.915 at Palm Beach.
If you are looking for a comp: Matt Koperniak: .322/.443/.470/.913 at Palm Beach.

Personally, I think it’s easier to teach a guy with good contact skills to hit for power than it is to teach a guy with good power not to strike out…

    32. Rainiel Rodriquez

    33. Hansen

In light of the thoughts on Riley O’Brien not technically being a prospect, I would like to change my #33 vote to Zach Levenson.

    #33 – Zach Levenson

It feels nice to have a different vote for at least one of my guys for the 1st time in almost 20 slots.

    #31. Rainiel Rodriguez
    #32. Zach Levenson
    #33. Andrew Dutkanych IV

I’ve got Cho, Honeyman, and Levenson grouped similarly as they are all similar style corner OF’ers, albeit each with their own problems. Levenson is in the middle of the group for me. Decent power upside and he can take a walk, but he needs to perform more like he did in the initial month of the season for an extended period of time and also get healthy again.

Dutkanynch has amazing stuff and has a really high potential, but he also has a really low floor given his injury history. Odds are it doesn’t work out, but the upside alone gets him over more low ceiling prospects as I’ll take the dart throw of upside to be an impact player.

I would not call Koperniak a comp for Petrutz. Sure their OPS was similar, but they got there in fairly different ways. Koperniak has some actual power projection in his bat and had a had a .148 ISO while Petrutz is a slap hitter with a .89 ISO. Now Koperniak has improved his power projection since A ball even further according to scouts, but I don’t know if Petrutz will given his slap hitting approach. Koperniak also can play a little CF while Petrutz is limited to corner OF.

As I stated earlier in the voting, I would be much higher on Petrutz if he could play CF. Slap hitters have a very hard time making it to the bigs as a corner OF.

For the record, Petrutz is not a slap hitter. He’s got good exit velocity numbers. Where he is not that good right now is in the launch angle department. If the Cards can help him tap into hitting the ball in the air a bit more, he’ll be a worthwhile prospect. It’s not a given, of course.

Thanks for making me question it as I did go dig up the statcast data. Petrutz does have better average exit velocity than I thought. His average EV was 88.5 which puts him 43rd of 233 A ball hitters that faced more than 200 pitches tracked with statcast, which is 82nd percentile. Where Petrutz was absolutely horrendous was hitting the ball straight into the ground with a horrible 0.8 launch angle. That launch angle puts him at the 6th worst in A ball. Maybe there is hope he can improve that and at least even hit line drives and maybe some fly balls. If I had looked at all the data, I would probably have Petrutz around 35ish on my rankings instead for hope he can lift the ball even a little.

Interestingly the Cards look to drafted a lot of low launch angle guys that bash the ball into the ground in 2024. Maybe a draft philosophy of target those guys as they fall and hope you can fix it. It is impressive seeing “high floor” Wetherholt’s numbers as he has an average EV of 91.9 which puts him at 4th best in A ball. Wetherholt had a 8.9% launch angle which could be a better, but it isn’t horrible as Wetherholt is built more like a line drive hitter and I don’t want him changing that too much. There is a lot of power potential in his bat as even even in MLB Wetherholt would be top 30 in average EV.

I think in the past the Cardinals would try to fix his swing. Hopefully, the new regime has more sense. Let a .340 hitter alone unless and until he runs into trouble. Never mind the OBP is higher than the SLG. Help him hone his strength instead of trying to force him, and everyone else, into a one size fits all optimized swing that puts balls into the parking lot at low level venues, but ML opponents can pitch around. Help him maintain the .483 OBP next year in Peoria. Help him improve vs RHP. Help him improve his fielding. Quit making the same mistake over and over. We don’t need more Walkers and Gormans. Please don’t turn him into another Walker and Gorman.

Putting Petrutz a little higher after seeing his exit velos. All prospects at this point have pretty big flaws and regardless of your thoughts on sabermetrics, hitting the ball on the ground as much as Petrutz does will mean pitchers just attack him aggressively as he goes up levels.

Why many of us prefer Dutkanych

This blurb from Vanderbilt University says everything that needs to be said:

“NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt’s Andrew Dutkanych IV was drafted in the seventh round by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2024 MLB Draft with the 201st overall pick Monday.

Dutkanych made five appearances in an injury-shortened sophomore season in 2024. The righty totaled 14 strikeouts over 10.2 innings. He got the start against Eastern Kentucky on February 21, going 4.0 innings with six strikeouts.

For his career, the Indiana native has tallied 20 strikeouts over 17 innings with a 1-0 record and a 3.82 ERA.”

So, he managed to take the mound for 17 innings in his college career and looked good. Sign him up.

I prefer Davis to Dutkanych as well. That is a scary injury history and so few innings pitched. I left Dutkanych off my list altogether. But why not Ynfante? Great numbers. Young for his level. Strikes guys out. Reasonable walk rate.
