    I really enjoyed Game 1.

It was a good one. Didn’t you say you’re going to be in Phoenix? Attending a game?

Great start to the Series, and a continuation of the exciting LCS’. Three of our former Cardinals made their presence known. Gallen starts for the D-Backs, and Tommy Pham turned on a pitch for a monster home run that gave Arizona the lead at the time.

And then the star of the 2023 post season, Adolis Garcia gets three hits, drives in 2 more to break the record for post season RBI, and tops it all with a walk-off extra inning home run. He is doing a nice impersonation of “2020 Randy Arozarena”.

BTW, for me those “most post season” numbers are not all that meaningful because the post season gets longer all the time. But they are not worthless either – just got to keep them in context.

in the day, Strom led the minor league pitching and Duncan led the big league side. Both had their proven methods and successes, but I am not sure if they were in sync. When Luhnow left, so did Strom along with about a dozen staffers.

My thinking is they are not too far apart. Some 30 years ago, pre-Money Ball, Pulitzer Prize winner George Will wrote a book about the ‘craft of baseball’ called Men at Work. In it he positioned LaRussa and Duncan as making use of stats, and their analysis, more so that any others in the game at the time. (And we all remember Dave’s binder.) The divergence that has developed in the post Money Ball baseball world is not really that stats analysis is good or bad, but rather in its proper usage as a tool to assist baseball decision makers. I think Duncan and Strom would be squarely on one side of that divide, and Mo would be on the other. They use the tool to drive nails and Mo uses it to mash thumbs.

I said on here back in April and several times throughout the year I really liked what the Rangers did during the offseason. But it really started in season 2022 when they blew out their manager and a couple of days later their non-baseball POBO. That set the stage for baseball men to return them to what their eye balls tell them and not always leaning on a computer. They invested in baseball, and it shows.

Last night’s game was really good. Arizona has a nice club. They probably won’t hold up against this Rangers team in the end, but they are good.

This without question is a national embarrassment to the Cardinals organization. They have so many former players and coaches showing how great they are. It’s a damn shame the Cardinals seem to be doubling down on the complete joke of a management group they employ. They are headed for more pain next season. You can already see it coming.

I fear the same TC, but it hasn’t happened yet, so there is still hope. Whatever goes down this winter, come opening day we will be tied for first place. In baseball you never know what is going to happen until it does or doesn’t.

You never like to concede that the enemy is superior, however I’ve come to the conclusion that the only way to work to Garcia at this point in time is to not work to him at all. Easier said than done because obviously the Rangers have other bats in their line-up that can make you pay for working around Garcia, but the manner in which he’s presently ripping the baseball forces me to make someone other than Adolis beat me.

Bikemike makes a good point. With multiple rounds and the possiblity of over 20 post-season games in one season to amass numbers to place into record books such as HR’s RBI’s, K’s, W’s etc. you have to really keep those numbers in context. I think there should be seperate conversations regarding overall post-season numbers and WS numbers, with the overall WS numbers that are placed into the books being the records that are superior for obvious reasons. The grandaddy series is limited to 7 games and should always remain the one in which the most focus is placed. When you condense the career and single season records down to WS games, the names that appear along with those records are the ones that are genuinely legendary.

Monty with zero Ks through 6 IP, but a quality start. Hmmm.

Yep, there’s more than one way to record an out or two and it’s my view that K’s are vastly overrated unless a runner’s situated at 3B with less than 2 outs in a close contest.

But the 7th didn’t go well. He rarely went past 6 IP for us this year.

If AZ holds on to this lead to tie this WS after last night’s tough loss, it’ll once again demonstrate the persevering nature of their ballclub. They swept a very good Dodger team and then had to win 2 games in row at Citizen’s Bank to survive and advance to this WS, so this team may be better than their regular season W/L record indicates. At any rate, I get the feeling that they’re a team that’s playing on house money and that in and of itself makes them dangerous.

Dbacks score 3 more runs in the 8th to extend their lead to 7-1. That’ll probably put this game out of reach for the Rangers. Unless, of course, Garcia gets another chance with the bat…Haha!

What do you guys think about Smoltz as an analyst?

DBacks add on. Going to the bottom of the 9th, now 9-1.

I can’t complain about Smoltz. Just a couple of days ago I was picking up a prescription for Mrs. 1TD at the Walgreens near our house and I wanted to tell the guy in front of me at the counter that I liked him much better as a CF’er than I do as a color analyst…Haha! I also always thought he was a lot larger of a guy than he looks when you’re standing right next to him in person. I think I could beat him at arm wrestling…Haha!

I bet Mr Ballgame might be a little low on muscle mass now that he’s in his 50s. If you go see the Orioles play you might see Boog Powell at his barbecue stand talking to customers. A few years ago we did and he was not nearly as tall as I remembered him to be when I was a kid. I think the years humped him over a bit, LOL, as it does most of us.

When I was a kid, Boog was a mountain of a man. Havn’t seen him lately, but I think I want to remember him like that. I like Arizona. They do all the little things that add up. Hope the Cardinals are watching.

Yeah, when I was still a young boy, Boog Powell was probably the first guy that impressed me as a giant among men although, him being an AL player, my view and perception of him was limited to TV or his baseball card. Later on as a young adult, two players that really stood out on the field of play when I was in attendance and situated in a seat at Busch Memorial were Dave Winfield and J. Rodney Richards. Winfield was what I would term a perfect specimen of a gracefully athletic big man, and when I looked down on the field of play when Richards was situated on the pitcher’s mound, he looked like the Empire State Building surrounded by eight two story flats…Haha! He was really an impressive sight out there. These days neither Winfield or Richards would be anything considered really extraordinary. It sometimes seems like all of these guys, especially pitchers, come from the land of the giants.

Those D-Backs are really a resilient bunch. Glad to see Pham still plugging away and getting a chance to make his mark on the big stage.

In watching these first two games, these teams seems to be a big contrast to what I see in watching a lot of our games in 2023. The biggest thing is neither of these teams swing at a lot of bad pitches. It seems like our club does that all the time. Might be more perception than reality, but it looked like these guys do a much better job than our club of jumping on hittable pitches and staying away from pitches you cannot do much with.

Oh, and speaking of guys not being so massive when they are older – this goes back to the 1990s, but there was a game we had when I was playing vintage ball against a team made up of mostly former Denver Broncos. Some guys on that former Bronco team had been offensive lineman, and they looked like a shadow of their former selves.

Now this was the ‘90s, so my assumption then was,”man, when these guys stop using the ‘roids they are just normal dudes.”

I don’t really have a dog in this fight but if forced to choose which team I would prefer to win the series I would probably take the DBacks. I have instinctively over the years favored the NL teams in the All Star Game and World Series. Two exceptions were 1986 and 2016. The Mets were our heated rival in the ’80s and well I wouldn’t root for the Cubs under any circumstances.

Me too, gscottar. I think our DNA strands have evolved in a manner which creates an instinctive tendency to always pull for a NL team unless, of course, the Mets or Cubs are invloved, in which case there is the natural occurance of a mutation of that DNA strand…Haha!

Additionally, a nice gesture from Pham.
