The Pirates down the Indians 7-5 at Three Rivers Stadium.
The Reds down the Giants 3-2 at Riverfront Stadium.
The Cubs lead the Nationals 2-1 in the 5th at Wrigley.
Milwaukee wins over the Phillies. 5-3 the final from Veteran’s Stadium.
Yeah Pugs, I’m messed up. Rain is forecast for tomorrow (Thursday) so today I mowed, then got the push mower out, then the trimmer/weedeater, and then jogged a little. Tomorrow I am planning on making my weekly trip to the Amish restaurant. Usually I eat on Wednesday and mow on Thursday so that’s why I am mixed up today.
Time to light up a 7×50 Palma Real cigar and sit on the couch with Whitey Herdog and watch the Twins at Mariners game from the Kingdome in Seattle.

Heading into Wrigley field trying to extend this season high 5 game W streak to a smooth half dozen and the rotation rolls over to none other than…Well, we’ll see what happens.
The pen should be in good shape for toaday’s game. OlliMo used the far end of the bench out there in yesterday’s win. Cy hasn’t been having his best year but it was still astonishing to win with the pitching we used. Some unlikely guys stepped up.
OhboyOboyObboy, a chance to whip up on those Cubbies, overtake them in the standings, push them down into the cellar exercise our vengeance, bring joy to Mudville.
All that on the very day our grandchildren return to Eexas after a long visit.
Which we will celebrate this evening with a din-din of good old fashioned meat loaf, baked potatoes and corn, along with a crunchy salad and a blueberry pie.

Looks like a line-up that may be capable of scoring some runs. Might need a dozen of them to keep it a close game.
If O’Neill ever gets his groove back, that lineup can be tough one through eight. And DeJong even runs into one on occasion.
If we can figure out Strohman, with Matz going for us this could be a 12 to 10 type of contest. You just hope are they ones holding the opponent to a mere 10.
Wasn’t there a game in Wrigley in the ‘70s or early ‘80s that was something like 23-22? Seems I recall something like that. It was the Phillies and Mike Schmidt hit 3 or 4 homers.
Hey, speaking of Schmidt, I will be meeting him next week in Chicago no less. Going to the National Sports Collectors show and have an autograph ticket for Michael Jack.
Yeah Bikemike, I don’t remember the exact score or details of that game, but it was a big deal at the time. And that’s neat you get to meet Mike Schmidt. He was undoubtedly the most feared hitter in either league for several seasons in the 70’s and 80’s and was no slouch with the mitt at 3B either. Three time NL MVP. Schmidt was no joke and at that time I was always envious of other teams who seemed to have all the superstars. I always used to think to myself, “Why can’t we get guys like that?” It took a while, but I got even with them…Pujols came along…Haha!
It was 1979 when the Phillies beat the Cubs 23-22. Schmidt hit two homers and Kingman hit three. I actually watched that game on Youtube a couple of weeks ago.

Yeah, gscottar’s right. It was King Kong who tatered up 3 times in that ’79 Phillies at Wrigley game. Thanks for refreshing my memory, gscottar! I remember hearing about that game on a radio station news break while I was driving. I once attended a game when Kingman was back with the Mets in the early 80’s. He hit what initially looked to be a harmless Big League pop-up to the LCF area of the OF that nearly skirted the stratosphere. By the time that baseball touched back down to earth, it had carried to a point that it barely cleared the 386 ft. mark in LCF at Busch Memorial Stadium for a HR. In the meantime, I’d finished an entire bag of peanuts and sipped down an ice cold Coca Cola. True story. The first part, I mean…Haha!

I thought that too. I just looked at the rules (ok, on wiki) and it seems to be “at most” 13 pitchers, not exactly 13. I’m a bit surprised they don’t want another live arm, just in case. They could have DFA’d Tepera to get the 40 man spot and called up someone to eat a few innings in a blowout. (Walsh seems the only option. Of the other Memphis pitchers on the 40-man, Thomas and Zuniga are on the DL; Naile was sent down the 16th so needs more time in Memphis before he can be recalled, and they probably want to keep Liberatore pitching regularly.)
Maybe they want the extra position player till Donovan’s fully healthy? I’m a bit surprised they are sticking with three catchers, though Herrera looks promising. Maybe they are riding things out till the deadline trade(s)?
