This is the closest I have seen to 1970s type of Cardinal baseball I can remember. The ‘70s were mediocre and poor Cardinal teams with former Cardinals starring for other teams that were good. We have some of that going on this year.

Yeah Wooster, Mikolas featured a turn that was well past good enough to earn a W. At one point he set down 14 in a row. Too bad he didn’t any help.

Nope Pugs, no relation to Mike.

Youtube the song. It was a big hit a few decades ago.

You know how it is with losing teams, they take turns stinking it up. It wasn’t his turn.

Yes, anyone over 50 remembers that little tune. I think it was in a famous commercial….might have been a Coke or Pepsi commercial.

One good sign is Contreras is hitting a lot better of late.

Jackie was connected to quite a few huge music stars of her time, the Beatles probably being the most notable.

Oh wow with Jackie. I’ve heard of that hit song, but I must confess to not recognizing her name. Just goggled the song and it came out in ’69…….could be how all of you gents recognize her name, but not this spring chicken here…..well maybe not a spring chicken, but a summer chicken maybe.

After tonight’s 5-4 final, the Marlins are now 20-5 in 1 run games. They’re also 4-1 in extras. That’s an astounding set of numbers at only a little past the half way mark. It’s beginning to look like Skippy must have paid close attention to the top step of the dugout during his playing days with the Redbirds.

Indeed TD. Just how many gold nuggets can an organization let slip away? Every team will lose a gem here and there, but it seems our team has opened up the vault to any and everybody.

Yeah, no kidding, Pugs. Remember when Oquendo spent so much time working reps with Skippy when they decided to move him from the OF to 2B? And he was always a guy that TLR platooned against certain SP’ers or in late inning situations as a pinch baserunner or pinch hitter or to lay down a sac-bunt. What I’m driving at is when Schumaker played with the Redbirds, he played for guys like TLR, Duncan, Oquendo and McKay. It’s becoming readily apparent that he latched on to and absorbed quite a bit of the tremendous amount of baseball knowledge that he was exposed to and it’s now paying off for him and the Marlins in his first stint as a Big League field manager.

Yep, his managerial career is sure off to a fantastic start, TD. Another ex-Bird who I once thought would be a wonderful coach or manager was David Eckstein. Wonder what happened to Eck? As a quick aside, I was just reviewing Pete LaCock’s lifetime stats and was astonished to read that he only accrued 27 career dingers. One of them a granny off Gibby in Bob’s last game. It seemed that he was around for quite awhile. I don’t think you’ll find too many 1st basemen with over 1900 plate appearances and yet have less than 30 career homers. I’m trying to think of a 1st baseman with similar longevity and with fewer homers, but none come to mind.

“Wow. This is easily the most brutal season I can remember….”

It should be, unless you’re older than Larry King’s dad. Cards haven’t had a winning percentage this terrible since 1919.

Marmol must go. Can’t fill out a lineup card, can’t run a bullpen, can’t do anything at an above-average level, that I can see.

We feel your pain, Bobby. Concerning the bullpen. Except for Hicks and maybe the injured Helsley, who could serve as a set-up man, why not DFA the entire lot of them? Does anyone think the bullpen would fare any worse if we traded our present relief corps for one made up of pitchers off the waiver wire and a couple of youngsters brought up? Bold moves need to be made. Sometimes panic is right…… sometimes panic clarifies……panic has even been essential in marking the upward surge of mankind….. concerning our bullpen, trust me, now is the time for panic. Who cares how large some of these contracts are ….just get rid of them. When you have truly bad apples in the basket, your only intelligent move is not to attempt to resurrect them, but rather to eliminate them.

Wow, very surprised to see the Rays included in that bad batch, Scotty.

When things are going bad….. the players and the fans seem to be just waiting for something to go wrong.

Anyone know why Mikolas wasn’t yanked after that first walk in the 7th? If they aren’t going to fire Marmol, why not send hi down to AAA ball for a rehab assignment?
