Interesting to see Baker up and in the DH spot. Maybe they want to evaluate him more as the trade deadline approaches? But DH vs. lefties won’t get him a ton of ABs.
Taking a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard on this 3rd of July 2023…….
The Cubs and Brewers are 6-6 at County Stadium in Milwaukee. The Cubs had an early 6-0 lead but the Brew Crew has fought back. Now in the last of the 8th Milwaukee has runners at the corners and nobody out.
The Reds and Nationals are scoreless in the top of the 1st at RFK Stadium in our nation’s capital.
The Pirates and Dodgers are 0-0 in the top of the 1st at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Expect this one to not be finished until late tonight.
UPDATE: Milwaukee with two runs so far in the last of the 8th. 8-6 Brewers now and still at the dish.
It’ll hurt watching Skippy run rings around Oli. I’m sure the brass will hand down directives to not show the skipper of the other team as much as possible.
Skippy’s Marlins got thrashed over the weekend by the Braves. The Fish probably aren’t in a good mood.
Final score from County Stadium. Mixed emotions here.

Trust me, it’s the Brewers that we have to worry about. Not the Reds. The Reds are playing on emotion nowadays. Once that runs out they will falter.Although he’s cooled off with only 6 hits in his last 5 games, I’m looking forward to seeing Arraez get some PA’s in tonight’s game. I’ve never seen him play. He’s all the way down to a .389 BA…That’s a pct. pt. lower than Brett’s .390 BA in ’80. In my view, George Brett was undoubtedly the best pure hitter I’ve ever seen play baseball. He generated a lot more power than Tony Gwynn or Wade Boggs and seemed to be able to amp up his rip any time a tater was needed. He sprayed it everywhere and could always cut down on his swing and produce a simple base hit when the situation demanded that a single was all that was needed. Heck, he could swing it so well it sometimes seemed he could dial in his rip for a double if necessary…
I would like to see the threads from the latter part of August in 2011 when we were about ten games out of the last wildcard spot.

Honestly I don’t see us doing much but if you’re bring Baker up for another looksie then they could be kicking the tires on Goldschmidt.
We make deals my guess is it’ll be for prospects although the Ludwick-3 way deal to get Westbrook was about as neutral as it got.
I mean teams may see value in players who they can plug in at DH. Yepez, O’Neill Baker and Burleson might have value on a low end scale. DeJong could bring salary relief and a middle of the road prospect in a team desperate enough to need a glove man who can swat a homer now and again.
Regardless we need to trim some fat. We got Contreras on the books another 4 years and pretty sure he’ll be DH or at first when Goldschmidt departs however that ends up.
Although the deficit in the standings is similar, obviously the ’11 edition was not at all comparable to this season’s edition. The ’11 ballclub was never more than 4 games under .500 and that was in early April. They were never once in last place and occupied first place in the NLC for a total of 63 days and were 26-23 in 1 run games. They also had Chris Carpenter, Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina and Lance Berkman. But the overriding factor was that back in 2011, they had a Big League field manager. That field manager knew how to deploy his players, had their backs and their respect, and made certain his team didn’t quit.
And the Reds are in a rain delay at RFK Stadium in Washington.
The good news about that is that I don’t have to listen to Sadak and Larkin, the Reds announcers. My gosh in heaven they are terrible!!!

I attended 3 NFL games at RFK Stadium in the late 70’s, one of which was played in near blizzard conditions. I’d have to say that RFK for a football game was the most raucous venue I’ve ever experienced. An Indy 500 and a college basketball game I once attended are the only two sporting events that produced more noise. RFK was no joke.
I went to a ball game in DC about 10 years ago. The only things I remember are Strasburg pitching and getting off the train at the wrong stop and having a long walk back to the hotel.
The only thing I don’t like about Arenado is that he makes bad decisions. Why would he throw that baseball to 1B on that Arraez base hit? I’m entirely certain Scott Rolen would have simply gloved it and tossed it back to the pitcher.
Walker sure doesn’t close on a ball very fast out there. Needs to run fast and track the ball at the same time.
No, he just doesn’t seem to have a good idea of the general area he needs to run to at the instant the baseball leaves the bat. Jimmy Edmonds may have been the best I’ve ever seen at sprinting to the spot. He wasn’t remarkably fast, but seemed to have a militay grade flight path radar that honed in on the precise vector of the baseball. It may have been his defensive longsuit.
Contreras shines on the strike-em-out-throw-em-out to end the bottom of the 2nd in a 2-1 Miami ballgame.

Last time someone suggested that I take the next 4 days off, I found myself camped out in a boring unemployment line for 5 hours the following week, Wooster….oh lookie here, Contreras with a leadoff ringing double. He’s now just a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, and he’s pretty much guaranteed 2 more at bats.
