The last two PAs Baker struck out on exactly the same pitch. Breaking ball that ended up out of the zone down and in. Like Walker with those fadeaway sliders he used to chase constantly, until Baker learns to recognize and lay off, he will keep getting them.
Great observations with Baker & Walker, Bling. Some people just have an eye for the intricacies of the game…… unfortunately, I do not.
Yeah Bling JMart used to drive me crazy swinging at head high fastballs. Everybody has a sucker pitch. With Bader it was low outside of the outside corner.
Tell you what …….I never thought in my lifetime that I could possibly see DiMaggio’s 56 game hit streak record threatened. Though the odds are still very much against it, this Arraez fellow has the real potential to one day make it interesting.
Walker seems to have learned quick. He doesn’t go for those sliders out of the zone too much anymore. The next thing to learn is just because its a strike doesn’t mean he has to swing at it. He does still hit those on the black off the end of the bat and ends up with a looper to right.
Walker’s mannerisms lead me to believe that he’s a fun chap to be around. He even kind of looks like an overgrown Eddie Murphy.
Birds threaten with one out and Nooty at 3rd(walk) and Goldy at 1st(base hit) here in the 7th with St. Louis still holding a 3-2 advantage. Now an Arenado sac fly to right scores Nooty and it’s 4-2 Cards. Oh here’s Contreras coming to the dish only needing a triple here to hit for the coveted cycle…..on 3-2 Contreras walks, keeping his perfect offensive game intact, but severely diminishing his chance for the cycle….. let’s just win this game shall we.
Yeah, that 56 game streak will be hard to surpass, Pugs. There was a lot of interest when Rose got relatively close in 1978 after he got close to 40 games, but it ended at 44. I recall even the nationally broadcast evening news on CBS, NBC and ABC updating the streak every day for a little over a week. He still holds the NL record. I also remember Paul Molitor getting close to 40 games in the mid 80’s. At any rate, that DiMaggio 56 gamer will probably hang around a while longer.
Nice recall on the Rose and Molitor prolonged hit streaks, TD. I vaguely recall Rose’s, but vividly remember Molitor’s run at the record. I doubt that Arraez ever eclipses 56, but he’ll most likely take a serious run at it one day.
Rose’s streak was a big deal, Pugs. I recall they’d actually break in to a regularly scheduled TV program for an update whenever he got another hit and show you a replay of his AB. It was really big news back then. Even people who weren’t really sports or baseball fans were talking about it. And yeah, a guy like Arraez would be the type to make a run at it.
CB Buckner always seems to ruffle a few feathers when he’s calling the balls and strikes.
I was only about 14 at the time, so I should remember Pete’s 44, TD. Hope I’m not losing too many brain cells at an alarming rate.
Pallante on for Mikolas here in the 7th with Marlins straddling bases at both 1st and 2nd….just 1 down.
Shucks! Gurriel doubles in 2 and we’re tied at 4 ……poor Mikolas.
Yeah, there’s a handfull around the league that stand out whenever they get HP duty, Pugs. Buckner certainly has his moments, but he’s nowhere near the worst. I’d mention a couple of names, but you probably know who they are…Haha!
Maybe Buckner sticks out in my mind because Rat used to always complain about him, TD …..oh no Marlins seize the lead 5-4. Pallante is not pitching nearly as well as he did a year ago.
And we head to the 8th down 5-4. This may be the most unreliable Cardinal pen I’ve ever seen.
