Coming into this series a split was a given, but who would have ever guessed that our bulky Birds would go homerless for London? I would have put the over/under for Cardinal homers for this 2 game series at 3.

Yeah, we need some willing victims, Bling, but the fact is that quite a few teams have feasted on the Cardinals to place themselves in a good position this season. One that stands out to me is SF, who have won 6 of 7 games against the Cardinals this year and have vaulted over the Dodgers and trail AZ by only 1.5 games. They play AZ today with a chance to move to within a half game of first place in the NLW. The Redbirds served to kind of get them going earlier in the season and have provided quite a few teams with a kick start. I have to believe that opposing teams and their fans look forward to playing them. Times sure have changed.

Kind of a good feeling having a win under your belt by high noon, with almost the entire day remaining to goof off.

Took a half a dozen pitchers to secure today’s 7-5 win. They allowed only 1 ER on 7 hits which is normally the line you’d see on an excellent turn by a SP’er who worked 7 IP’ed.

Yeah Pugs, and I happened to notice that the Tigers/Twins are already in the home half of the 7th. They must have started that game awfully early.

We are 1-0 when Jack is out with a hip impingement. That may be something to build on.

Pffft. I’m not buying in. My mind is made up.

I may end up being proven wrong and the Cardinals may play stellar baseball the rest of the season and make the playoffs but I will have to see it to believe it.

Taking a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard today:

The Reds lose their 2nd in a row. 7-6 Atlanta the final at Crosley Field. Cincinati had runners on the corners with one out in the last of the 9th but Newman bounced into a 5-4-3 twin killing to end it. Only 8.5 games back now.

The Pirates lost at Miami. 2-0 the final at Joe Robbie Stadium.

Milwaukee wins a nail biter at Municipal Stadium in Cleveland. 5-4 Brewers in ten innings.

Back home – travel day today after a terrific breakfast with family.

Wow, nice win! Checked the box (I still get a better sense of a game’s progression by checking the box score then watching highlights), and saw we gave the bad guys a 4 spot before we even came to bat. We had been outscored 13-1 in the series at that at point.

Showed some muckle by coming back to win, and keep them off the board until a meaningless ninth inning tally.

That might be the biggest highlight in what otherwise turns out to be a dreadful campaign.

Yeah, I still enjoy studying an old fashioned box score. It’s fun. Especially when a game provides an unusual way to score a run or the situation requires a close study of the box to figure out why a pitcher wasn’t charged with an ER or a hitter not credited with an RBI. When I’m finally able put the pieces of the puzzle together and conclude what happened on the field, it provides me with a sense of satisfaction in the context of being relieved that my brain still functions well enough to get by…Haha!

The Dodgers scored late, aided by a dong by Will Smith. 4-4 heading to the 10th with Houston.

The Astros push across the free runner in the 10th but the Doyers do the same. 5-5 at the end of ten innings now at Doyer Stadium.

I am hoping Houston wins this game tonight.

The Astros push across a run in the top of the 11th to take a 6-5 lead. And then the Doyers fail to score Freeman from 2ndbase in the home half of the 11th.

Houston wins this one 6-5 in 11 innings. They now head east to take on the Redbirds at Busch in a three game set starting Tuesday evening.

Luhnow is a genius. The Astros were really, really bad for what 3 seasons when he rebuilt them but now they are approaching a decade of dominance.

The way to salvage 2023 would be to announce that he’s taking over for Mo.

Luhnow is a proven commodity. He might tear everything down and rebuild it. It might mean a couple of 100 loss seasons – but I’d trade that for real sustainable success.

I wonder if he’d return to the Cardinals?

Astros probably win 2 of 3, Cards probably win 2 of 3 off the Yankees.

3-3 and another .500 week in this extended stay in the cellar.

Luhnow is a genius. . .The way to salvage 2023 would be to announce that he’s taking over for Mo.

BDW hired Luhnow once before with good results, but since then has been infected with Analytics Derangement Syndrome. Besides a lot of water has gone under the bridge. It was a guy named George Postolos (? Spelling) who hired Luhnow away from STL, and judging from his bio, he might be positioned to know if Luhnow is the right guy now. Maybe hire him and then take his advice.

Between the hacking scandal and the Astros cheating scandal I would say it is an understatement that Lunhow’s reputation within MLB is at an all time low. No thanks.

Last I heard he was involved with some Mexican soccer club.

Woodford looked really sharp in both days vs. the cubbies.!
He needs more innings, and meaningful ones.
Pallante looked to struggle some..but did get out of trouble..
Verhagen, again serves up another dinger..! DFA.
Stratton, don’t think he threw at all..what does that tell ya.. DFA.
Libby, needs to sharpen things up in AAA, it should not be done in MLB.
Wain, being of veteran status is pretty much untouchable; although if he looks and pitches more of
what he has been doing lately, I would stick him in the pen. Give the starts back to Woody or Matz.

I think it has been established that both Woodford and Matz are both valuable bullpen arms – but not starting pitching.

They are fine in middle relief and maybe the occasional spot start. Let’s just leave it at that.

Agree with Lee. Woodford needs more innings.
    VH & Str, are ?
    Andre — on the edge.
    Lib, AAA
Waino, I have no answers for this situation. maybe the pen.
problem is, that Matz actually looks better in the pen vs. starting.
Maybe factor in a bullpen start each week, similar to Sundays win.
You could have Woodford, Palante, VH, Str, go 2 ea., then close it with Gio or JH.
Still leaves Matz & Cabby. or any combination of this…!

A lot of ideas, but it’s the same names. Not sure shifting roles is going make any difference.

When Mo makes his additions at the deadline, it’s Wainwright who needs removed from the rotation.

Of course Mo will send Libby to AAA and leave Adam as is, which does nothing to help the 2024 rotation, but kissing Wainwrights butt is Bills agenda. He’s more concerned with legacy red jackets than winning.

If Adam were greedy, he could milk another 20mil out of Bill next season, and laugh all the way to the bank.
