Hernandez for me at first though goldy isn’t bad. Rolen is a easy choice for me at third. Arenado makes the more incredible plays that is true. But he also whiffs on a lot of plays he should make. Rolen was always consistent. While not as much range as arenado and not as many incredible plays, he almost always without fail made the plays he should make. To me that’s the mark of a great fielder. If I was a person who only watched arenado for one game and saw him pull off a incredible play but 3 batters later just totally botch a 4 bouncer, I would have to question whether he was a great fielder or a guy who just got lucky on one play.

It’s been 21 days since The Nootz has appeared in a Big League game. If you divide 21 days by 7, you come up with 3 days. Today is Monday. So, if you add Tuesday and Wednesday to Monday you also come up with 3 days and 3 days is the same number of days as is the 3 slot the place in the order in which The Nootz has been placed for today’s game. So, you can expect him to occupy the 3 slot in the order for Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s game too…See how those analytics work?

Let’s take a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard on this Juneteenth holiday. By the way, what is it we are celebrating today???

Cubs and Pirates are scoreless in the 1st at Forbes Field.

Rockies and Reds, no score in the top of the 1st at Riverfront.

Arizona and Milwaukee are 0-0 in the 1st at County Stadium.

Time to light up the 7×50 Palma Real cigar and sit on the couch with Whitey Herdog and watch the game. After the game a little jogging and then water the landscaping.

Eh, Carlson is overrated as a CF. I would put him out there in place of Donovan though if the best defense is the goal.

Donovan got the nod because of his bat. Carlson just hasn’t consistently shown anything at the plate that would make him the better choice.

Well in this case we would be choosing Carlson over DeJong.

If it were a lefty starter, then Carlson should play in the OF over Donovan 100 times out of 100. But I’m ok with Donovan playing some of the time over Carlson against Righties especially with how hot Donovan has been lately.

The question is, will Edman ever move from CF? I’m perfectly good with DeJong defensively. I’m just not sure about offense. But he’s been better in that category than Edman so maybe the Cards are right to stick with this alignment.

Willie…That’s my precise take on Rolen/Arenado at 3B.

That is a wash as far as I am concerned.

Nobody, not even Keith Hernandez, could pluck balls out of the dirt as efficiently as Goldy.

Top of 1. The 6’1 210 lb. crafty 25 year old righty, Josiah Gray, dealing for the Nats today. Josiah was selected 72nd overall in the 2018 draft by Cincinnati.

Donovan – Enters with a 7 game hitting streak. Strikes out looking.

Goldy – Taps a slow roller out to Garcia at 2nd base and he’ll make the short toss over to Dominic Smith at 1st a true one……2 down.

Nooty – Whiffs on 3 offerings.

Leadoff double by our old buddy Lane Thomas…..who is having himself a very nice 2023 campaign thus far.

Why is a routine grounder into LF a double? Geesh.

The Nats have two former Cardinals in the OF today, Lane Thomas and Corey Dickerson.

A gimme double, a WP and a sac fly. We just gave them a present.

Yadi hangs onto that strike 2 tip foul. Cannot keep giving teams extra outs……3 of them are tough enough for our boys to accrue.

Well, it helps to get the 3rd out before the 2 out 2 RBI base hit…

It’s only the 1st inning. We have to be patient…

3-0 Nats after 1 complete. Our boys should be able to rough up Josiah though. Nats touch us up for 5 hits. Keep that pace up and they’ll get an even Steven 40 today.

I just wanted to pop on to say that it’s wonderful to see Pugs back in the PBP saddle. Truly a heart warming moment as I worried we’d lost our dear friend Pugs to the ether, or worse yet…to another team.

Glad to see you here, Pugs!!

Very kind words……thanks stlcard25! I’ve been following our Birds since age 6, so I’ll never jump ship now……unless I go crazy in my old age.

    Top of 2.

    Arenado – Walks.

Contreras – Bounces it out to Abrams at short where “Tank” will flip it to Garcia for one and over to Smith at 1st for 2.

Walker – Lines a base hit to center and we’d better start looking at possibly inserting Jordan into that leadoff slot for a spell.

Gorman – Strikes out swinging and that’s now 0-for his last 20.

Another double for Thomas places Nats at 2nd & 3rd with just one out. Nats are now 7-9 vs Flaherty in the early going here.

And only a fantastic catch by Tommy Edman in center can bring this frame to a somewhat merciful conclusion…..5-0 Washington.
