Just happened to notice that Contreras’s BA is down to .205. Yikes.
June 11, 2023 at 3:29 pm #224062
jj-cf-stlParticipantWe’ve got one catcher, Knizner. The other guy is a weak DH.
June 11, 2023 at 3:30 pm #224063Walk, passed ball. Yet another way to lose. Thanks Hicks.
June 11, 2023 at 3:32 pm #224064Yeah, that passed ball was 100% on Contreras.
Hicks got pretty rattled with the speedy De La Cruz on base.
And now a bad angle by Walker leads to a pop up hit.
June 11, 2023 at 3:32 pm #224065If you bring Hicks into a tie game or a game with a one run lead, you deserve to lose.
June 11, 2023 at 3:36 pm #224066LACardFan – who would you rather they pitched? Gio and Cabby pitched yesterday. Helsley shouldn’t go 3. You want Matz?
Sorry. I was wrong. Gio pitched over an inning 2 games ago. So I guess they could have gone Pallante then Gio then Helsley. But that limits tomorrow.
June 11, 2023 at 3:47 pm #224067Have we seen this before?
June 11, 2023 at 3:48 pm #224068I’ve always been led to believe that it’s best to start making plans for tomorrow after you’ve finished playing today’s game.
June 11, 2023 at 3:57 pm #2240691TD – that’s a good strategy during the postseason but probably not for 162. Managing a bullpen’s innings is a challenge. Guys are always getting worn out – especially with starters not going at least 6 innings.
I have no issue with using Hicks there. Or with Ollie’s management of this game. It’s on the players for this one.
June 11, 2023 at 3:59 pm #224070Contreras really the weakest link lately both offensively and defensively. And he’s only going to keep aging. The bat will probably be better. But doubtful on the defense.
June 11, 2023 at 4:02 pm #224071And the beat goes on.
June 11, 2023 at 4:04 pm #224072Playing PDJ everyday and bringing in Hicks into a close game in the 8th is the definition of insanity! Enough is enough! Changes need to be made NOW! When I saw Burleson pinch hitting for PDJ I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry! The same stupid stuff over and over! ENOUGH!
June 11, 2023 at 4:04 pm #224073Ragged performance in the late innings.
June 11, 2023 at 4:07 pm #224074Back to 12 games under .500.
This team is what its record says it is.
Bad.
We have a few good players but not nearly enough to win consistently.
It’s such a mess I really don’t know where to begin to fix it.
We need 3 starting pitchers, 2 bull pen pitchers one from each side and a set up man. I guess Helsley is still an ok closer? Hard to say because the saves ops are few and far between.
We need outfielders for sure and Goldschmidt is getting old.
DeJong stinks, Walker just needs to DH, I guess because he sure isn’t an outfielder – he costs us runs every time he plays out there.
Baker and Burleson are nothing special – why do we need them?
Like I said – so many needs where do you even start?
June 11, 2023 at 4:09 pm #224075If he can’t hit and he can’t catch, what is he?
June 11, 2023 at 4:11 pm #224077A waste of 85 million dollars?
June 11, 2023 at 4:17 pm #224078We would be better off with Knizner. When Noot is back, put him in CF. Walker needs to be at DH. He is a net loss in the OF.
The question I have is would we be better with O’Neill in OF and Edman at SS, or Edman in OF and DeJong at SS.
Pitching is just a collosal train wreck. I don’t know what to suggest.
June 11, 2023 at 4:20 pm #224080Is there any way at all to package Contreras in some kind of deal and move on?
He can’t seem to hit or catch…..
June 11, 2023 at 4:25 pm #224081
jj-cf-stlParticipantBB, if its a tossup, I always defer to the long term plan. So do you want O’Neill and PDJ in 2024?
June 11, 2023 at 4:35 pm #224082We would not be better off with PDJ, period!
June 11, 2023 at 5:06 pm #224083Folks, if DeJong had made a decent throw to home they would have gotten De La Cruz at the plate. But DeJong’s throw was low, slightly in the dirt, and on the 1stbase side. That run scoring is on him. He can’t hit and now he can’t throw.
And I was yelling at the screen when I saw Hicks was coming into the game. Why oh why oh why he is on a big league roster is beyond me.
And Oakland does us a HUGE favor by sweeping the Brewers. 8-6 the final.
San Francisco leads the Cubs 8-2 in the 6th.
Maybe, once again, we don’t lose any more ground. But the idea is to gain ground, not just lose it.
June 11, 2023 at 5:15 pm #224085I am actually encouraged watching them the last 4 games. First off, the pitching has been better for a month now. It’s not fantastic, but it’s solid enough to win many games. And the last approximately 4 days a few things have happened that are encouraging. Edman looks great in CF. Donovan is finding that hitting stroke. Walker is taking much better at bats. Carlson looks great defensively and good offensively. Arenado is consistently hitting well. And Goldy is finally coming out of his slump.
And now the negatives which is a shorter list. Walker still can’t play the outfield. Not his fault but he needs time. DeJong is striking out every other at bat. Gorman is chasing too many high/low pitches. And Contreras has been really bad at everything.
I feel like that is a lot less things to fix. I really don’t know what to do about Willson. We can play Knizner more often I guess. But the other 3 are solvable. Walker can go back to Memphis when Lars comes back or be the DH (which I doubt we do because he needs OF reps) and DeJong can then return to being mostly off the bench where he was always planned to be. Gorman has shown more plate discipline earlier in the season and he can get back there (I think right now he just is trying to be the hero too much because offense has struggled).
June 11, 2023 at 5:22 pm #224086If we’re not close in 30 days, we can trade any of Flaherty, Montgomery, Hicks, O’Neill, Stratton, DeJong, or Knizner without any real negative impact next year.
June 11, 2023 at 5:50 pm #224087
stlcard25ParticipantI’ve got an admission to make…while I still root for the team and follow along here and other venues, I haven’t spent a cent on the MLB.tv package for the last two years. I haven’t had any cable package other than for a month or two over the winter each year. So I haven’t watched a single game this year and haven’t watched much at all for about an entire calendar year (I did watch some playoffs last year). There just are better things to do. So I say this as an increasingly casual fan, mostly due to life circumstances but also due to the quality of the product…
This team is in a rut and I don’t know that the typical second half surge is going to come this year. If there are no signs that it’s going to happen by July 4th, I say burn it down and rebuild. Texas has shown that it’s possible. That said, I think it’s about time for Mozeliak to take the fall for a change. I don’t like Marmol so I’m fine with him going. Let’s get someone willing to lead the pack, not follow the true leaders around.
Go Cards!
June 11, 2023 at 6:20 pm #224090Lose 2 of 3 to the reds after you won the opening game of a series. …
Some puppet has to go. Will be have the stones to do it.
