I don’t blame anything on analytics for several reasons. A primary one is that it’s a fancy term that seems to be designed to avoid resposibilty. In my view, the origin of this team’s failure is a glaring lack of preparedness coupled closely with run of the mill stupidity.
According to Fox Sports, out of 30 MLB teams, the Cards rank 9th in fielding, 13th in batting, and 25th in pitching.
And from the standings we know we are 26th in winning percentage.
So you can see two things. First, baseball is all about pitching. Second, if there are some analytics out there that could overcome the lack of quality pitching, the Cards management hasn’t found them.Well analytics is just a fancy name for information. Information has been around in MLB for a long time. Whitey Herzog could spout statistics all day long. Dave Duncan carried around huge binders full of statistics and information. The problem, in my opinion, is that the balance between relying on information as a single tool in the toolbox versus it being it being the only tool in the toolbox has gotten out of whack.
The failure of this season has been from top to bottom. Blaming it all on one particular person is mistaken from my point of view.
What’s the weather like in St. Louis? Looks like alot of green stuff in the area, or at least alot has passed through.

Yeah, gscottar, it’d probably be in their best interest to avoid taking their duties and resposibilities so seriously and simply approaching them as if they were a fun hobby. All you need is access to BR and a grade school level comprehension of simple multiplication and division skills in the area of arithmetic. It’s what I do…Haha!
Missed yesterday’s shenanigans as we had a family-work-around-the-yard day. Good one to miss.
This one looks like a series loser on paper. Greene has shutout ability, and Wainwright has not fared well to date.
But you gotta play the game. Oh, I was wondering what that hamburger deal was as well. My thought is that it means we are so bad we have to subsist on hamburger and not steak.
Also I was riding my bike last week, and went by a house that has a giant size version of what looks like that same hamburger in their side yard. It seemed odd and I thought about the Cardinals dugout burger and wondered if something was going on that I have missed. That happens a lot these days. I worked with mostly millennials and have kids and grandkids in the 20-30 years old range, and they always seem to have something that I am clueless about.

Hitting coaches take heat from fans when offense is perceived as lacking. Thats just part of the landscape. The idea that Albert, a seasoned professional, quit his job because people like me were bashing him on social media is ridiculous.
It should be understood that, if Albert didn’t like Mo’s take on the proper use of analytics, there wouldn’t be a Mo quote where he says that. He’d say something else, like the nonsense about Albert being sensitive to criticism from fans.
As of now, we don’t have anything from Albert’s side of it. Eventually, some insider will write a book about stuff like Albert’s and Shild’s departures. Meanwhile I am leaning toward something more believable than he’s sensitive.
A little while back, some guy on the next barstool said the hamburger placed on the dugout rail means order up, like how the cook at a greasy spoon diner puts the plate up there to go out. Like we’re ordering up a homer.
Well, the 1st was very typical of the Card’s offense. Donnie leads it off with a double. That means Goldschmidt’s sole reason for existence is to advance him to third, so he is there with less than two outs. Some how, some way. Base hit, sac fly, or a grounder behind the runner. So Goldy pulls a grounder to the shortstop. One out. Then Babe Ruth and NA strike out. Couldn’t even put it in play.
The second was some good baseball. 2nd and 3rd, nobody out, Walker singles in a run. Then DeJong does what he does, which is strike out, and Edman steps in. He put it in play to the right side, and since Walker ran on the pitch there was no DP chance. Edman out at 1st as the run scores. Walker has dirt on his uni top to bottom. Looks like a baseball player and playing like one too. Inning ended with Donnie striking out. I hope they got that half inning on video for the How to Play Baseball training video.
Yeah, I had a bad feeling when Eddie fell behind 0-2 with that baserunner at 3rd and 1 out, but he found a way to tap it over to the right side to push across the lead run. Anytime I see runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs I always have visions of a big inning, but if both those runners don’t score I feel like I’ve been short-changed.
Bad strike 3 call on Carlson there. Plus another strike called on a pitch clearly outside the zone earlier in that sequence.
Agreed J, and I also like walker in left better than when he was in right. Its going to be interesting to see what happens when Noot comes back. If Carlson stays hot that is.
Yeah, they will have a tough time sending Walker back down. I assume Noot will go to CF and Edman will rotate back into the infield. But I really like watching Edman in CF. Of course Edman will be an upgrade to DeJong at the plate – especially lately.
Also, they said O’Neill starting to feel pain free. He’s still probably at least 3 weeks out but at some point he’ll be back.
Walker has chased some of those siders today. He’s reverted to that front foot off to the 3rd base side again. Pulling his shoulder out. Yesterday the front foot was in line with the back foot.
I don’t, but Bell wore several jersey numbers for 6 different Big League teams during his 12 season playing career.
