I don’t know ZTR finishing last in the worst division will surely bring some major changes! If it doesn’t we are doomed anyway!

Just tuned in…looks like another typical outing. Can’t hear what he’s saying, but the Mad Hungarian looks a little more animated than usual…. Maybe the on-screen commentators are starting to echo this board (finally?).

Statistically, you want your best hitter hitting second.

The guy makes the argument about the number two hitter getting to the plate more times during a season, and that is the big plus about hitting at 2. But still, you lose the first inning impact of batting with what should be two of your best on-base guys ahead of you. Plus in that same argument for having your 2 hitter batting more often, you are losing at bats for your 9 hitter. On our club, we are basically giving away maybe 40 of Edman’s plate appearances by hitting him 9 rather than 2.

Also, you trade the number 2 hitter for the number 9 hitter being in front of you for the remainder of the game. I can see the advantages of batting your best hitter second in some lineups. I just don’t think it works well for us because we are not deep enough to place a solid RBI man at 5.

I would go with Noot or Donovan at 1, Edman at 2, then Goldy, Gorman, Arenado. That is a good 1 through 5 coming up around 4 times per game.

Well that error by arenado really opened the door. Monty had pitched very well to that point. It’s possible he goes a couple more innings if that play is made. Our team just has aot of issues

A real pitcher would have found a way to contain the damage, not fall to pieces.

In regards to Al Hrabosky, it’s my view he’s been the only guy associated with Cardinal broadcasts for the last several years who will dare to touch on the realities of a bad situation and not constantly entirely sugarcoat lousy performances. It’s my impression that he’d like to take the criticism to another level, but he feels a bit constrained to do so. He’d better be careful if he wants to continue to work for these people. At any rate, Al is Al and although he may not be the most lucid of the various broadcasters associated with the Cardinals, you can’t fault his candor and I’ve always liked him.

Goldys’ team leading OBP belongs in front of Gormans team leading SLG%, as todays 8th inning demonstrated.

Paul isn’t in the two spot for his RBI, he’s there because he had an OBP over .400!
Dramatic pause…. There are only 10 guys in baseball with an OBP over .400

Paul has scored 40 runs, our next guy Edman is at 30. Again, only 10 guys in baseball have scored 40 runs.

We have RBI guys. Gorman is a top 10 mlb RBI guy. If the desire is for Paul to hit 3rd, for his RBI count?, then you’re misreading the intent when batting him 2nd.

The farther you move Godly or Gorman back in the order, the higher risk you run of Paul standing in the on deck circle when the final out is made. No-one on the roster can replace Goldy’s OBP.

A classic Al quote during a Cardinal broadcast several years ago when he was still Dan McLaughlin’s PBP sidekick during game telecasts…”The reason he’s so successful is because he’s not at all afraid to come inside to the hitter at any time, Dan…That’s what I did”…Haha!

Goldschmidt’s career OBP is .391 and he’s averaged well over 100 runs scored a season for that same career. Albert Pujols’ OBP was .417 and he averaged well over 120 runs scored for the entire time he spent in a Redbird uniform. Slot him 2nd and they’ll place you in a white coat with funny looking sleeves.

That’s what I’d do too, Bikemike. And incidentally, the guy who formulated that 2 slot theory works for an outfit called “Senior Solutions LRS IT Solutions”…That’s all I need to know. Show me an article written by “The Ol’ Perfessor”…Haha!

Haha!…When I saw that line-up I was placed in one of those funny looking coats until until Mrs. 1TD assured the authorities that the living room table vases and end lamps were safe and secured…

I’m with you, 1td. Mad Al was very critical of the team last night and in the pre-game today, especially relievers. His comments were a welcome relief rom the sugar coated commentary we get from the others, which at this point is becoming delusional.

Just after they put the tarp on the field for the rain delay Al was really going off on how pitchers are handled now days. Basically, they aren’t challenged, they’re coddled and are hardly real men anyway.

    All true.

Yeah, 4ev, and you can tell that he’d like to really unload and speak the entire truth, but doesn’t do so because that would spell bye-bye, Al. He’ll probably end up in the soup line anyway for not being one of the shiny happy people holding hands…

Yeah, Goldy gets on base. But some of that is a bit passive – they want to test the youngster hitting behind him so they pitch around Goldschmidt. The Red Sox did that and Gorman made them pay!

With the Cardinals, Goldy is there to drive in runs. He is not there to be the guy that gets on base and scoots around the bases – he is a run producer first, and a run scorer as a result of that.

I just prefer him at 3. Think it suits his game and the team’s lineup better.

I saw that, Bling. Al will never be a distinguished member of a consulate who’s sent overseas on a foreign diplomatic mission, but he gets his point across…Haha!

Well, Bikemike, Goldy’s only one SB behind Eddie and he hasn’t been CS yet!

Albert’s slg% was always best on the club, so he hit 3rd.

OBP in front of SLG%, it’s always been that way for good reason.

Goldschmidt’s had the best SLG% on this team since he’s been a Cardinal and when this season’s over it’d be my guess he’ll again feature the best SLG%.

I’d be tempted to slot Goldschmidt at 2 on the ’04 team. Or at 4, or 5, or 6, or even lead-off…Haha! But not the ’23 edition.

I say call up Luken Baker and let him take some hacks in the DH slot. His OPS is 1.099 vs RHP and 1.020 vs LHP. He’s got 750 PAs worth of AAA experience, so he’s seen plenty of fairly advanced pitching. AAA success doesn’t guarantee MLB success, but AA success doesn’t either, and that hasn’t been an issue for the organization. Hype isn’t going to help us win, but a basher whose bat is hot might. Its worth a try.

But still, you lose the first inning impact of batting with what should be two of your best on-base guys ahead of you.

Current Cardinal leaders in OBP (minimum 100 PAs):
    1. Goldschmidt – .402
    2. Nootbaar – .380
    3. Gorman – .364
    4. Donovan – .342
    5. DeJong – .328
    6. Arenado – .315
    7. Edman – .310

Plus in that same argument for having your 2 hitter batting more often, you are losing at bats for your 9 hitter.

In what world do we care about a career .321 player losing ABs? You guys thought Bader sucked with a career .316 OBP. That is 0.5% difference. It is meaningless.

So, are they both great hitters or are they both terrible hitters?

No, he is not the guy who formulated the theory. It has been around since the 1990’s according to Baseball Prospectus

I wonder how Puhols will do in the booth today and how much of the load he will carry?

Sadly, that’s the most interesting story line for today’s game with the NL worst Cardinals.

May has come and gone and they are what their record says they are….

I checked and I think 1990 was the last time the Cardinals finished last in their division? Not saying they can’t finish above that this year – I’m seeing 3rd, maybe even 2nd – but no playoffs in either event.
