The Cardinals are a half game up on the Rockies so we aren’t the worst team in the League. Second worst. What was that about a turnaround?

If Marmol has a manager WAR of -3, and instead we had a slightly above manager with a WAR of 1, then our won loss record would be 29-29.
We’d still be pissing and moaning, but not suicidal, lol.
Why wait for the trade deadline, let’s make the obvious move now

All we can hope for is to hang around inside 4-6 games back, get to trade deadline, and at the trade deadline hope Mo can get 2-3 starting pitchers. All the moves have to hit and the Cards will then have to tear up the second half…

Also have to hope neither the Pirates nor the Brewers goes on an extended hot streak.

This team has never really gotten off the ground this year.

The last time we won a game that Monty started was April 8th.

Since then we have lost his last 9 starts in a row, and he has taken the loss in 6 of them.

The last time he went 6 innings was May 5th, with his last 4 starts topping out at 5.1 IP. Since May 5th his ERA has gone from 3.29 to 4.48.

A couple conclusions can be drawn from that. If there is a losing streak going, he can be counted upon to keep it going. If there is a winning streak going he can be counted upon to shut it down. And the pen will be pitching just about half the game. Of course, the trend could reverse, and something different could happen this time. The strategy must be to hope for that. It would really be outrageous to lose his last ten starts.

My assessment is that using Burly and Yepez as a DH platoon is a useless waste of two roster slots. Neither one is hitting enough to matter. We don’t need two seldom used bad outfielders sitting around.

I say call up Luken Baker and let him take some hacks in the DH slot. His OPS is 1.099 vs RHP and 1.020 vs LHP. He’s got 750 PAs worth of AAA experience, so he’s seen plenty of fairly advanced pitching. AAA success doesn’t guarantee MLB success, but AA success doesn’t either, and that hasn’t been an issue for the organization. Hype isn’t going to help us win, but a basher whose bat is hot might. Its worth a try.

I hope that Mo is burning up the phones to find 2-3 serviceable starting pitchers. If he can’t do that then I hope the organization is smart enough to throw in the towel early enough in the season to actually find out what they have with some of their younger depth pieces.

I just don’t know if we can cure our pitching woes. Most of our pitchers struggle to go deep in games which exposes even a good bullpen let alone one that isn’t really that good. I mean far as saving the season goes. I think if we want to get pitchers, we need to think long term vs right ths minute type guys that may not stay. I think getting really good long term guys means we are going to have to give up some right now talent. I doubt ownership is willing to do it but to me that’s what’s needed. I can deal with us losing this year if it means we could be better the next few years. It’s one of the reasons I didn’t like the Contreras deal. We need long term planning here, not short term bandaids.

If we can’t get a couple of good starters at this deadline then I would go after a couple of high end relievers. If our starters are only going to go 5 innings then we have to absolutely lock down innings 6-9. Also, relievers are generally cheaper than starters so DeWitt and Mo should like that part.

    1. With the possible exception of Zsa Zsa Gabor, everyone picked the Cardinals to win the ’23 NLC.
    2. We all saw the line-ups, in game management, and entirely bizarre pitching changes and catastrophic BP debacle in the ’22 NLWC series.
    3. This team didn’t seem to respond well after the Cardinal manager publicly declared from a podium during a post-game presser that one of his players deliberately dogged it in a failed attempt to score a run.
    4. With the exception of the Red Sox, who are 2 games above .500, the Cardinals are the only last place team in the Big Leagues to have a plus run differential. The Red sox are 2 games above .500 in the ALE.
    5. The Cardinals are 6-11 in 1 run games this season which is a vast improvement over a couple of weeks ago, but still lousy.
    6. For his career, Paul Goldschmidt averages an RBI for every 5.6 AB’s from the 3 slot as opposed to averaging an RBI for every 6.2 AB’s from the 2 slot. He’s collected 10 HR’s this season and 9 of those have come with the bases empty. He leads the team in hits, BA, doubles, OPS, runs scored, and is tied for 2nd in HR’s. He’s collected 26 RBI’s which is one more RBI than Willson Contreras who’s hitting .214 and is 2 for his last 40.
    7. When was the last time the all important 3 slot was routinely occupied by a second year player that is still proving that he has the ability to excel in the Big Leagues after being demoted in his debut season primarily due to an alarming K rate? Unless the name is Pujols or Trout, no one quickly comes to mind.
    8. Never once has anyone ever acknowledged or owned a solitary one of the countless inane blunders that have originated directly from the top step of the Cardinal’s dugout.

What conclusions should a Redbird fan draw from these facts? Well, I’ve often jumped to the conclusion that the Cardinal field manager is just plain dumb, but that may not indeed be the case. He could very well be quite talented and adept in other areas that require a high level of intellect and skill along with the capacity to apply them to a difficult task such as raising and cultivating exotic breeds of orchids, but I’m also entirely convinced that managing a Big League baseball team is not his longsuit.

Well, there are a few details to add, 1TD.

Ollie has to implement what the wonks come up with. He has no choice, as Shildt found out.

O’Neill was dogging it. I saw the video and so did everyone else. If he isn’t man enough to own up, screw him and the horse he rode in on.

Goldy has done well in the #3 slot, and has had guys good at getting on base batting ahead of him, so he could drive them in. But what if there isn’t anybody good at getting on base to hit ahead of him? Than what? Well, he is very good at getting on base, and somebody has to do it.

After mostly sucking all last year, Gorman was hot for several weeks. That means he has turned into Babe Ruth, so why shouldn’t he hit 3rd. There is little point stepping in front of a hype train.

I keep wondering how – HOW – we are supposed to get all this pitching that everybody is always talking about.

How are we going to get this pitching, somebody please tell me.

General Jack Beringer said he’d piss on a spark plug if it’d do any good. That’d be real cheap, so MoBill would love that part of it.

That might not help much, but I don’t see the manager or brass with any possibilities to do something much better. MoBill’s roster ain’t changing. It gives up a lot of runs. The roster is what we thought it was.

Do we have a 40 man spot available? Baker isn’t on it.

Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper along with General Buck Turgidson both know that placing Albert Pujols and Paul Goldschmidt in the 2 slot is the direct result of a vast commie conspiracy…”Today, baseball is too important to be left to the inexperienced and uninitiated. They have neither the time, the training, nor the inclination for strategic thought”…

Here in a tie game, nobody out, runners on 1st and 2nd Gorman needs to advance the runner to third with less than two outs. Somehow, some way. He fails to do it. Slash whatever he wants, doesn’t matter. We needed something then. He will knock in a couple runs another time when it doesn’t matter. That is how our offense works. Doesn’t work.

I echo 1TD’s point number 6 on hitting Goldy at 2. One quick fix would be to put him back at 3. He leads the team in WAR, yet has only 26 RBI. Contreras is having a terrible year yet has 24 ribbies. Arenado has the same number of homers as Goldy, but 12 more RBIs.

Need to get your top run producers in the three, four, five slots. I like the R-L-R with Gorman in the middle of the big guys, but would put them 3-4-5, with Arenado at 5. Contreras should be no higher than six in the order.

Still the pitching is bad and the manager is not real good. I think that game last night may have been the back breaker. You have a 5-0 lead, you simply need to close that one out. To lose it to a club ahead of you in your division, especially when you won’t get many shots at them, is unacceptable.

Yeah Bikemike, pitching’s the primary weakness and there’s no quick fix, but Goldy can be placed at 3 in the order in the time it takes to write his name. I’ll also point out that Contreras with a solo HR in this game is now tied with Goldschmidt at 26 RBI’s apiece.

Here we go. Had 1st and 2nd no outs and failed to score. Now an error, a walk, a rocket off the wall and bloop. A missed cut off man in there also. Went from 1-1 to 4-1 just like that. When you stink, you stink.
