I would like to ask a question. Why is Contreras hitting 3rd? Even against the lefty?

Yep, the spreadsheets our manager was given say the lineup has to be LH, RH, LH, RH, LH, etc….

Rats, Gorman is just now starting to get PA’s vs lefties at the mlb level. He has 42 career vs same side to date.

When we faced Kershaw he didn’t start. They are cautiously starting to pencil him in vs same side, and perhaps some of the reason may be the unavailability of O’Neill and Carlson, who typically start vs LHP’s.

Vs last nights starter Gorman got a start, but not in the 3spot, he hit 6th, typically where O’Neill hits.

Contreras who batted 3rd, has well over a seasons worth of PA’s vs lefties, it was best for the team last night. He is better vs lefties (.856) than righties (.784) over his career. He is simply more proven vs lefties than Gorman, and it also helped “manage” Gorman. It turned out Contreras faced the LH starter 3 times and Gorman twice, just by moving Gorman down 3spots.

And I could be completely wrong. That’s just my take on it.

There is something like 80 million reasons why.

The rotation has averaged a Game Score of 46 in the month of May. How far do you think that gets you. Mikolas is just about keeping us in the game. Less so with Matz….. Flaherty had that one good start, the other three he stunk. Montgomery has been very shaky…. and the same with Wainwright. Liberatore had that one good start. If you add in all the metrics and stats, conclusion: this five-some is really bad. I know its been said a thousand times right here…. but what the hell gives? Rome is burning.

Seriously, does anyone feel comfortable with any one of these guys? There has to be little confidence going into to any of our games.

The line-up constructions that appear as though they were deliberately put together with the intent to incite torment and outrage have placed our household furnishings and fixtures into threat of genuine peril for some time now. I’ve become somewhat accustomed to the nonsense and simply secure certain items. You know, urns, figurines, table vases and other fragile, decorative, adornments that could possibly land me in divorce court if any of them were to be damaged or destroyed…However, I have to acknowledge and disclose that I had no issue with the Redbird field manager’s approach in the 8th inning of last night’s ballgame. Sure, Mercado’s been swinging a hot bat for all of 14 AB’s, but in my view, once Bell handed the baseball to Diaz, PH’ing Burly and then Donovan was the correct approach. And although many of you are aware that he’s certainly not my favorite flavor, I can’t and won’t fault the Cardinal manager for his all-in approach to a full on attempt to take the lead and win the game. It just didn’t work out. At any rate, at some point before the line-ups are posted for tonight’s game, I need to make a little run to the hardware store to purchase another container of Gorilla Glue…

This is a repeat question from an earlier thread, but I thought I may get some increased input from some of the many baseball strategists and tacticians on this elite squad. I was thinking last night that while playing on the road in a tie game in extras, it might be a good idea to simply IBB the first guy to step in to start any extra inning to instantly place both the GIDP and force in order. He means nothing as a baserunner insofar as a potential run and only serves to afford the IF’ers numerous favorable options. It also places much more difficulty on the execution of a successful sac-bunt by creating the very good chance for a forceout or even a DP in the event of a lousy bunt attempt. I’m aware that there’s alway the possibilty of a subsequent BB to then push the runner at 2B over to 3B with no outs, but the possibilty of the GIDP or force at HP is still there, so the dice roll still seems worth it to me. At any rate, I can’t recall seeing it done yet, but I’d bet a dollar that it’s probably been put into practice.

I’ve seen it done. I guess it depends on who the batter is. I think it was Cody Bellinger that was walked to start the extra frame.

You do have a good point Pugs. I’ve thought that myself. Just depends upon who the batter is. If it’s a good hitter like Mike Trout you walk him. If it’s a dud like Arenado or Goldschmidt you simply pitch to him and strike him out.

I’d almost IBB anyone, Rats. That silly runner at 2B with no outs in extras just seems too easy to move over to 3B with only 1 out without the presense of the possibility of a GIDP or force out. I despise that stupid make believe runner rule. It ruins so many aspects of the game. Please, just make it go away!

I’ve been “complaining” since last fall that the Cards need two top tier pitchers and it’s showing obviously.

If they want to make AND more importantly have a chance in the postseason they have to add two guys. Giolito and Beiber will hopefully end up available. The Cards have plenty of trade chips.

Yepez, Burleson, one of the MI not named Gorman, Baker, etc all would have more value elsewhere.

I think walking the first batter in the 10th is good for many situations on the road with the score still tied. I didn’t mind it last night even if pitching around the guy was not the plan.

On the other side as the home team, I might be more tempted to bunt if they walked the 1st batter. Gotta get that runner to 3B with less than 2 outs. As you say though, a bad bunt cant turn into a DP too. Gotta know your batter. If they suck at bunting, don’t do it. And if you suck, you suck, and it doesn’t matter in the end. And teams that suck lose games in ways they didn’t even know were ways you could lose games. The Cards sucked last night.

You can’t walk that guy unless you have a pitcher you know can throw strikes. We don’t so we can’t.

Most of us know Wainwright won’t be taking his turn tonight situated in his favorite venue. In addition to being the only NLC venue in which he has a losing W/L record, GAP has tagged him with the loftiest ERA and by far the most HR’s allowed than any NLC rival’s home ballpark. In all the other NLC opposing team venues, he’s run roughshod over those teams while working on the road. And that includes Minute Maid from back when the Astros were still an NLC member of the NL.

I like Montgomery but this one is on him. He had the lead. He gave up the lead and couldn’t get through even 5 innings. FAIL

I figured our resident genius might give that extra inning IBB approach a test run with either Hicks or Cabby at the next opportunity…

But not just the DP, Euro. That force at 3B can still come into play on a run of the mill or even quality sac-bunt attempt with a nice fielding play. I’m not too crazy about a sac-bunt attempt with baserunners situated at 1B and 2B. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a stauch advocate of sacrificing the runners over in a late and close game, but that 1st and 2nd set up carries with it a real potential for a bad misfire. I’ll add that no one seems to have the ability to lay down a quality bunt anymore. I don’t guess it’s at all drilled into pitchers since the across the board DH.

I asked this a couple of days ago…Did Manfred outlaw the hit and run? I haven’t seen the Redbirds attempt that effective offensive gambit all season long. In fact, I can’t recall any team attempting that time honored play this season. If it’s still allowed, someone ought to try it because it works…

It’s my view that Contreras should be situated behind HP for as many innings as is allowed by the condition of the grease fittings in his knees. All the mumbo-jumbo double talk that was poured out and spread around was nothing more than an ill-conceieved attempt to take the glare of the spotlight off of those who uttered the nonsense and deserved to be called into account for their own shortcomings. And I’m patently certain that’s precisely what I think I’m thinking…

1TD, as long as you’ve got your thinking stick out, why do you suppose we need 3 catchers?
