I remember games from Crosley Field and my dad always referred to Connie Mack Stadium as Shibe Park. Also, I can’t remember either him or my uncle ever referring to the old Cardinal venue as anything other than, the ballpark.
May 19, 2023 at 6:43 pm #221190Rain delay or postponement is a very good possibility there, 1td.
The Doppler Radar shows a HUGE pile of green stuff just to the west of St. Louis.
Reds trail the Yankees 1-0 in the last of the 5th at Crosley Field. Judge #13 in the top of the 1st.

May 19, 2023 at 6:49 pm #221191Man alive…Just checking out the dimensions of Forbes Field and although it wasn’t quite as intimidating as the Polo Grounds, it was no joke. Just about 30 ft. to the left side of dead CF was the deepest portion of the ballpark at 457 ft. and the LF foul pole measured out at 365 ft…Haha! What could be termed the power alleys in LCF and RCF were 406 ft. and 408 ft. respectively. I’m reasonably certain Mr. Musial enjoyed stepping into the batter’s box in that ballpark as the RF foul pole measured out as the most shallow portion of the OF at 300 ft. At any rate, you tell me if some of those guys from those bygone eras weren’t just as big and strong as the modern ballplayers to have been able to put up the types of numbers as they indeed did ripping the baseball in some of those classic old venues.
May 19, 2023 at 6:56 pm #221192Right now here a few miles SW of Busch its overcast, but not a dark angry looking overcast. Wind is almost still. No rain although it rained lightly about 45 minutes ago.
May 19, 2023 at 7:00 pm #221193Yeah. it’s a little odd, Bling. It’s cloudy here, but no rain. However a radar image that I looked at a while ago showed a pretty decent sized band of weather that looked to be headed in our direction. And like you mentioned, all we got was a little light sprinkle an hour or so ago. I think they’ll play.
May 19, 2023 at 7:13 pm #221194I attended a fair number of games at Crosley when I was a kid. It was an easy drive from St. Louis. The main thing I remember is the neighborhood was terrible. Dad and grandpa were happy when the the new stadium was built.
May 19, 2023 at 7:31 pm #221195Nice to see Goldy work the BB, but he swung and fouled straight back a pitch in that sequence that he normally obliterates.
May 19, 2023 at 7:34 pm #221196Very few LH’ed hitters can cover that letter high heat that K’ed Gorman on that 3-2. Tough to lay off though as their eyes light up like they hit the jackpot when they see it up there.
May 19, 2023 at 7:41 pm #221197Matz sure doesn’t need a pitch clock.
May 19, 2023 at 7:45 pm #221198No, he sure doesn’t, but neither do I. I’m in no hurry.
May 19, 2023 at 7:59 pm #221199I believe Gorman has a good chance to eventually have genuine success vs. LH’ed pitching, but if he really wants to speed up the process in doing so, all he has to do is pay close attention to Freddie Freeman when he steps into the box and rips lefties.
May 19, 2023 at 8:01 pm #221200Matz doing a nice job of working around 4 hits and 1 BB.
May 19, 2023 at 8:08 pm #221201He’s at 56 through 3. So 5 IP is doable. He would have to get real efficient to try for 6. Unless he melts down of course.
May 19, 2023 at 8:09 pm #221202Coleschmidt with another SB…
May 19, 2023 at 8:09 pm #221203Matz hanging in there. Goose is tough, especially that split finger. He got Gorman with the upstairs heat both times. That is how you have to pitch him.
A lot of lefty hitters struggle on high heat. Had Helsley thrown that pitch in San Francisco that night we would have one more win and one less loss right now.
May 19, 2023 at 8:10 pm #221204Gorman chased that letter high heat again. I’m not sure if he can get that one.
May 19, 2023 at 8:15 pm #221205Oh, and Forbes was indeed huge, and really tough for eighties. Dick Stuart hit 35 ding-dongs one year, and I am guessing most were on the road.
Course the big Pirate righty power hitter was Ralph Kiner.
May 19, 2023 at 8:16 pm #221206Yeah, not too many can cover that one, Bikemike. A few all-timers come to mind who could consitently turn on it, but that’s about it. Don’t know exactly why, but you see a lot higher pct. of RH’ed hitters who don’t have much trouble getting around and connecting on that letter high fastball.
May 19, 2023 at 8:16 pm #221207Matz not quite living up to our past lefty #32, but is getting it done so far.
May 19, 2023 at 8:19 pm #221208Yeah, I saw that 365 ft. LF foul pole and all I could do was laugh.
May 19, 2023 at 8:21 pm #221209That high fastball does seem to be a bit easier for righty hitters. I was a switch-hitter when I played as a teenager and young adult, and definitely could turn on the pitch low in the zone better from the left side.
On the high one, I think it is because most pitchers are right handed, and it is a bit easier hitting that pitch when it is running away from you a little than when it is coming in at you. As a righty you can still catch it late and slap it to right field. As a lefty the ball seems to be on you so fast you cannot get it.
May 19, 2023 at 8:23 pm #221210Matz caught Thompson looking nothing but fastball on that 3-2 and froze him up with the offspeed for the K.
May 19, 2023 at 8:26 pm #221211Yeah, that down and somewhat in to a LH’ed hitter is many times a mistake that they can really tee-off on. Dangerous location to a LH’ed hitter.
May 19, 2023 at 8:29 pm #221212One hit so far.
May 19, 2023 at 8:29 pm #221213DeJong with a decent average and 3 homers, but only 4 RBI. Kind of an odd stat since he never leads off.
Goose is making the pitches, but we have ramped his pitch count up a bit.
