6:10 p.m.
RHP Adam Wainwright (0-0, 7.20) vs. LHP James Paxton (2023 debut)
BSM // KMOX
(and Bally Sports South/Southwest Extra)May 11, 2023 at 7:31 am #220079Our starting pitching is like bringing a knife to a gun fight.
May 11, 2023 at 8:34 am #220082As Forrest Gump’s mom used to say, it’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.
Or in the case of our pitching, you usually get stuck with the soft, gooey ones.
May 11, 2023 at 8:39 am #220084Cards have the worst record in the NL by a full 3 games but instead of being 12-15 games out of the division are sitting only 8 back due to the Pirates and Brewers recent collapses.
6.5 out of the 3rd WC spot but that will probably be harder to grab than winning the division.
Truthfully, the worst thing for this team might be to be really bad but stay ‘in contention’ due to being in the NLC – and being ‘in contention’ will prevent the changes that are long overdue up and down the organization.
May 11, 2023 at 8:50 am #220087I’m anxious to see how Wainwright does. We need more than we’ve seen out of him since before the dead arm/mystery mechanics stretch last year.

That is exactly correct. As long as we are within 5 to 10 games of a playoff spot Mo will justify doing the same old same old, which is spinning our wheels.
May 11, 2023 at 9:12 am #220095I am glad we are away from Wrigley Field so now Contreras can focus on playing baseball instead of being a WWE villain.

ParticipantIn a normal STL season this whole Cohtreras situation might be a big deal but this season its just a footnote on what the hell is going on with this team. I hope that he doesn’t become one of our mother-in-law players over the course of his contract. You know if your married that you’re just stuck with her.
At the present time we have a few on the roster…. and in the past the list is too long to mention, but Card fans know the usual suspects. i.e. Mo’s mistakes.
May 11, 2023 at 9:50 am #220098Does anyone else feels similar to me, that in the next couple of months Mo is going to make a colossal mistake and deal someone like McGreevey and others for a one and a half year rental player in an attempt to win the division with maybe 85 victories?
We will see if the club even climbs back, but I get the sense we are in for more of the same short-term posturing where we will send away more good, young talent and bring in veterans who are decent players, but not the kind that you can add to your core unit.
At some point I would like to see us go with what we have while Goldy and Arenado are still productive, and keep the focus on replacing them in the next 3 years or so with developed in-house players.
May 11, 2023 at 10:24 am #220099You might be right Mike but if we make a trade I hope we deal from the bloated OF surplus and move Burleson, Yepez, and O’Neill. The first two can’t play defense and the third can’t consistently hit and stay on the field. None of them would bring back much but would at least provide some clarity that Mo talks about.
May 11, 2023 at 2:32 pm #220107Reds beat the Mets 5-0 today so that drops the Cards to 3.5 games out of 4th.
May 11, 2023 at 4:27 pm #220108What we need before next year is a couple top of rotation starters. By that I mean two guys better than Montgomery. I don’t think we will get that. Probably not even one. I don’t think BDW will OK the money for major FA signings. Not after the Contreras fiasco and Matz before that. I don’t think we have the trade chips to get two, and probably not to get one, other than a rental.
May 11, 2023 at 5:15 pm #220109One could say that time is of the essence here. At least as far as the long run goes. Next year Goldschmidt will be 36 and Arenado 33. They are the core players of the offense.
May 11, 2023 at 6:23 pm #220111At 8 games back and firmly entrenched in last place the Cardinals are in the same position as the Yankees who are 4 games above sea level with a W/L record of 21-17.
May 11, 2023 at 6:24 pm #220112Bike Mike, 85 wins! You are a true optimist! Lol! I hope your right though! I’m afraid 75 wins MIGHT be a more attainable goal!

You are probably right, Steve. To get to 85 wins, the club would have to play 20 games above .500 from here on out, 72-52. They are 12 games under .500 right now.
As I type this I have the Rays-Yankees on television, with of course Tampa up 4-0 in the 6th. What is really tough to take is the best team in what, the last 20 years or so, has a former Cardinal hitting in the key number 3 slot. Man, what a player Arozarena has turned out to be, and what great job that front office has done putting together that team. Cranny called it when right after that deal he posted “…should not have traded Arozarena…”
May 11, 2023 at 8:36 pm #220120Arozarena’s undoubtedly a good player, but what’s really astounding are the numbers he’s put on the board in the post-season. He then places himself in the category with the elite. The guy’s collected 11 HR’s in 31 post-season games. To place that in context, Albert Pujols collected 19 HR’s in 88 post-season games. I wouldn’t work to Arozarena in the month of Oct. The only thing I’d offer him in a post-season game would be 4 fingers.
May 11, 2023 at 9:02 pm #220121Our outfield fight now should be
Arozarena
Garcia
BaderCompared to what we have it’s laughable!
I do think Tampa has done it the right way and always am hoping we hire someone from high up in their FO to run ours!May 12, 2023 at 12:19 am #220122Our outfield fight now should be

Garcia
BaderCompared to what we have
You might be right but what did Adolis Garcia do in our minor league system to enter in your starting lineup? I mean he did keep it a degree or 2 cooler with all the swing and miss.
Bader got us Montgomery. Maybe they didn’t want Carlson but they sure wanted a deal where they got an extra player if Bader didn’t suit up in the postseason. They took on a risk and it might of paid off any maybe it hasn’t be he’s really only had a cup of coffee with them.
May 12, 2023 at 5:22 am #220123what did Adolis Garcia do in our minor league system to enter in your starting lineup?
That would be an interesting question to ask the Rangers. Obviously, they saw something we didn’t. It is worth noting that the Rangers are in first place and the Cardinals are in last place, so their eyesight is probably better than ours.
May 12, 2023 at 6:18 am #220124Some people continually ignore a key fact on Garcia every time it is pointed out. The Rangers knew him as well as the Cardinals and they gave up on him too.
And no other team wanted Garcia on an MLB contract, either. Just two years ago, Texas put him on outright waivers and the other 29 teams ALL passed on him. Any team could have had him for just $50K and NO ONE WANTED HIM. Again, that was in the spring of 2021, not ancient news.
It is great that Garcia has improved since and become a front line MLB player. We all wish it had happened here. But this revising history only shows that some are looking for any opportunity to criticize. Mentioning the comparative standings as if they are relevant to this situation is ridiculous.
P.S. I have always believed that Randy’s actions soured the organization on him. I cannot prove how significant it was, however. I also believe that no one should provide a final view of that trade. Liberatore was clearly rushed but is just 23 years old and still improving. Just the other day, he rejoined MLB Pipeline’s top 100 prospects after being named the International League Pitcher of the Month. I find it sad that some have already made up their mind about him.
May 12, 2023 at 6:58 am #220127May 12, 2023 at 7:10 am #220130IF Severino gets healthy and IF the Yankees want to trade him and IF the Cardinals are interested and IF the Yankees are interested in the players the Cardinals would offer more than what other teams would offer, then maybe.
Another article in which a national writer speculates about a player who might be traded down the road and a blogger grabs it, inserts the Cardinals into it and makes it appear to be a legitimate rumor. We are going to get dozens of these over the next 2 1/2 months. Every pitcher who might be available is going to get linked to the Cardinals because they are in need.
“Cardinals Could Make Blockbuster to Boost Rotation”
It can be fun to speculate, as long as we separate click bait from substance.
P.S. Next time, this would better fit on the RUMORS thread pinned to the top of the board rather than buried in a Game Thread. Thanks.
May 12, 2023 at 7:39 am #220131Technically, it doesn’t even qualify as a rumor.
May 12, 2023 at 7:43 am #220132This lefty tonight is probably not as good as the last one, but that wasn’t the problem. If we give up 14 hits and 6 walks again we will lose again.
