    I’m 55% on DeJong now.

I was thinking he might do something good there too. Ironically, a telling sign for me occurred in yesterday’s game after he struck out. I was a little surprised to see him walk back to the dugout like it was no big deal. Last year he would’ve had the look of man going to face a firing squad. I believe so much of the reason he craters is the mental aspect, i.e., he gets too down on himself.

He’s had more hits, RBI’s and HR’s at Wrigley than any other ballpark other than Busch Stadium. I can’t recall what year, but I seem to remember him really doing some damage in a post-season series vs. the Cubs. Edit…I was wrong. He never played in a postseason series vs. the Cubs…Haha!

Abracadabra, I’m fixed, just in time for my contract year.

I don’t know if you guys caught the postgame interview with Flaherty but all I can say is wow! Either Jim Hayes or Derrick Goold asked him about his velocity dipping during the game and he just went off in a rude way saying they didn’t understand pitching and he wasn’t answering that question anymore. He was basically a class A jerk.

Wow, Flaherty was being a jackass to the media after the game.

I’ve never seen him behave this way with reporters. So I disagree it was Jack being Jack.

He needs to stop acting like a whiny baby and learn how to pitch instead of going off on reporters. I mean come on the STL media is as about as cream puff as it gets. 99% of the questions are softballs. Dude wouldn’t last ten minutes in New York or Philadelphia.

Yeah, I watched it. And it wasn’t what I would merely term testy either. He immediately formed a hedgehog defensive position at the instant he heard the word velocity. He then went on an offensive counterattack which was obviously designed to expunge the term velocity from the media’s vocabulary. Makes you think he’s nursing that right shoulder.

I agree that he behaved in the manner of a jerk, gscottar. He also ain’t too smart. I can understand the frustration, but anyone who possesses a modicum of self-scrutiny instincts knows that the move is to keep still and not say anything. “Sorry, I’ve got to take this call”…

Jack tells the boys at the presser that they don’t understand the art of pitching. Doesn’t look like he does either.

Jack and Oli aren’t helping themselves by acting wrongfully offended when reporters ask “why are things going wrong” type questions when they are losing twice as many as they are winning. Oli’s rant on “we are more frustrated than the fans” to BenFred’s question was just that — a rant. BenFred didn’t suggest the fans were “more” frustrated than the players. Oli saw that as an opportunity to cut him off and avoid what ever question was coming. Offensive counter attack I guess.

After Jack’s 10 earned run performance against the Angels, Frank Cusumano asked him, “Are you shocked or surprised when you look around this locker room and all this talent, all the winning you’ve done, and see where you are. Are you stunned or how do you see it?” Jack felt like the question was beneath him and played it off as a ridiculous, saying “What am I supposed to be? Like this is what we expected? What kind of question is that?”

It’s a bad look for the org. Man up. Those and the velocity questions are legitimate questions. When you stink, you have to answer to it. If you want questions you like better, then play better baseball.

7 hits and 5 walks in 5 innings is a bad performance. Good infield D helped him limit the damage from all that traffic. With a combination of poor control, lowered velocity and being hittable, there is nothing good to say.

Another 5 inning start, 93 pitches. There were some 2 strike hits. He didn’t have his next excuse lined up, so what’s he supposed to do?

The good news is the second string pen guys did enough, the offense is looking better and we are playing good defense.

Bob Gibson can get cranky with the press if he wants to. What has Flaherty done to earn that right?

What’s the line from the movie? Something about winning 20 in the show…..

Cards need to trade him. He’s on a 1 year 5.4M contract.

He hates StL and he won’t be back.

Jack has always seemed a little thin skinned. On the question, all he had to say was “I will take a little off the fastball now and then to keep hitters off stride, so that may be why you saw the change in speeds.”

One thing you learn in life, at least the hope is you learn it, is that effective communication comes when you respect the person you are talking to. You can disagree with them, but show them respect by asking them to clarifying why they have the opinion they have, and explaining why you have your opinion. Refusing to talk about it is rude and comes across as arrogance. Not a real good human trait.

Jack has always seemed a little thin skinned.

That is a good characterization, which means he probably takes it too personally. If you look at it as business, it’s easier to have a thicker skin and not take these things so personally. Jack would probably better serve himself if he looked at his dealings with the press as strictly biz, nothing personal. He needs more Michael Corleone and less Sonny.

He knows this too based on what I remember in his dust ups with Mo and the press last year over his injury, rehab schedule and plan to return to the active roster. In one exchange, he got huffy with the press and told them they were just looking for something, looking for someone to blame — it’s just what you guys do. He was trying to turn the tables and make it the fault of all the reporters that he and Mo were giving mix signals needing clarification.

Since he thinks that’s just what they do, then why not accept it as biz and play along? Just tell the reporters that yes, with injuries and rehab, plans often change. That was the main source of the confusion because we were both describing a moving target. If he thinks the press are a bunch of trolls, why feed them?

Doubt we can get anything good for Flaherty! 8 starts this year and not 1 quality start! Terrible! He pitches afraid to me! So afraid his pitches will be hit hard in the strike zone he is constantly behind and walks and hits batters more than anyone I’ve seen in quite some time! Time for a new home for him!
