We’re either situated in a dry county, or this bar closes awfully early after a day game…
April 19, 2023 at 5:58 pm #217172You are right about the second half of May being rough with no days off. First we have to survive until then. 4 or 5 pitchers every game is not sustainable, and it does not look like there is anything that can be done about it. Waino is not going to reel off a string of 6 or 7 inning gems. Liby’s pitching line in Memphis was very similar to Woody’s. Some think swapping them should happen, but why? Its not an upgrade and Woody isn’t going to learn anything pitching in AAA. Not that Liby will either. Swapping in a fresh pen arm here and there is about all that can happen.
April 19, 2023 at 6:14 pm #217173Hudson got his head handed to him in Memphis today. 2.2 IP, 8 H, 6 ER.
65 pitches in 2.2 innings. I guess that is mathematically possible, barely.
April 19, 2023 at 6:27 pm #217175Connor Thomas is getting slapped around, WHIP over 2 so no help there. Graceffo is not on the 40 man and he’s been inconsistent. Just walked 5 in 3 innings last time. That’s about it unless you want to talk about MdGreevy in AA. There will be people talking about McGreevy in AA. He could be the next Pallante.
April 19, 2023 at 7:16 pm #217176We must have the worst starting rotation in the majors right now
Cards are mind bogglingly bad so far.
6 games out of the division and in 4th place – barely.
5-4 the second 10.
April 19, 2023 at 7:54 pm #217178We could hope that Montgomery and Mikolas pitch to reasonable expectation.
Montgomery has been a .500ish pitcher with an OK ERA and WHIP. He significantly overperformed his baseline in the partial season after he can here, but it would be irrational to expect that partial season to be the new him. In 2021 he went 6-7 for a Yankees team that won 92 games, and last year at the trade he was .500 for a team that went on to win 99. He’s not likely to carry us or anything, but should turn in decent starts.
Mikolas last had a winning record 5 years ago. Last year he almost pitched .500 for a team that won 93, but he looked good generally. Expect about the same as from Montgomey.
Beyond that, its just hoping and praying. Quality starts is probably not a reasonable expectation. It could happen once in a while, but so could total blowouts.
There isn’t an answer down in the system as of now, so I really don’t know where we go from here.
April 19, 2023 at 8:19 pm #217179Not good news about Hudson, and I too don’t see any point in swapping out Woodford for Libratore at this juncture unless you simply want a LHP’er as opposed to a RHP’er. In my estimation, Woodford’s cryptonite has been the tendency to not keep the baseball in play in the form of allowing 6 HR’s in a little shy of 20 IP’ed. I recalled seeing the same tendency with Libratore last season, so I looked it up and he was touched up for 5 HR’s in a little shy of 35 IP’ed in ’22. Obviously that’s a little better, but it’s still a tough way to make a living. I really thought that Cardinal pitching this season would have near to the worst in regards to allowing HR’s this season, but they’re actually a little below the middle of the pack. That surprised me. I didn’t break it down to SP’ers and the BP across the entire league, so that may come into play. At any rate, the ladies may dig the long ball, but if you pitch for a living, it ain’t good.
April 19, 2023 at 9:03 pm #217184All 3 teams atop the Redbirds in the NLC added a W today with Oviedo being the winning pitcher of decision for the surprising Pirates. He’s now 2-1 with a nice looking ERA of triple dueces. He also now has 3 GS in which he’s allowed 0 or 1 ER in 3 of them. Where do they come up with these guys?
April 19, 2023 at 9:23 pm #217185Normally this trip to Seattle would be the most distant destination the Redbirds could travel to play a Big League baseball game, but not this season. It’ll have to settle for 2nd place when the Redbirds play two with the Cubbies in jolly old London town in late June. Let’s hope they don’t already feel like they’ve experienced the unpleasant atmosphere of “The Blitz” a month or two before they arrive in the UK. I’m still patiently waiting for “Their Finest Hour”…Or two.
April 19, 2023 at 9:27 pm #217186Well, lets see if Our Mo shakes things up on the off day tomorrow before they head out of town.
April 19, 2023 at 9:45 pm #217187At this juncture I’d agree about Liberatore. But his ceiling is much higher than Woodfords. He has done enough at AAA. He’s either a #3 or so, or a AAAA. It’s about time to find out. I honestly am not looking forward to Woodford pitching against the Giants and Dodgers.
April 19, 2023 at 10:16 pm #217188I haven’t kept up with what Liberatore’s done at Memphis, but I’m with you in the sense that I’m not too optimistic about Woodruff taking a turn in either whatever they now call the SF venue, or Dodger Stadium. There’s a possibility that Wainwright could take his place in the rotation for a turn against the Dodgers, but that’s more than a week and a half’s worth of hazy vision in the crystal ball, so who knows?
April 19, 2023 at 10:21 pm #217189He might, Bling. You never know what the high command will do once they’ve had an extra day to convene in order to pour over the maps and charts…

Participant1tough….. Mo was heard telling one of his underlings “Don’t worry, be happy”. That should ease the angst that you’re feeling.

ParticipantWoodford actually pitcher pretty well. got ahead in most at bats, he had 2-3 pitches
he left up in the zone and got hit hard.. Hopefully he remembers this and learns.. I think the pitches he left up had been on 0-2 counts too.! better off spiking in the dirt.April 20, 2023 at 10:19 am #217206It doesn’t have to be a Liberatore vs Woodford thing. Bring Libby up, keep Woodford in the rotation if you wish, put Matz in the pen, and DFA Hicks. There are many ways to shuffle things around.
Speaking of shuffling some may say this is just shuffling the deck chairs on the titanic but so what? My question is would it be any worse than what we are getting? We might as well keep throwing things at the wall to see if anything sticks because what we are currently running out to the mound is not working.
The ERA for our current five starters is 5.66. Ouch.
April 20, 2023 at 10:36 am #217207Yeah, I didn’t separate the five man from the BP, gscottar, but I saw that the entire staff was rated at 19th at a 4.66 ERA. I’d be curious to know what position the Cardinal rotation occupies with that very unattractive ERA of 5.66.
April 20, 2023 at 11:34 am #217209The Cards KO’d Madbum. The Dbacks are eating some money.

Our starters rank 25th in ERA.

April 20, 2023 at 11:49 am #217211Heck maybe the Cards will take a flyer on Madbum once he is officially released. It would only cost the league minimum so no real risk. He has been very bad recently but again no big risk. I seem to recall that he and Waino are big buddies.
April 20, 2023 at 11:51 am #217212Thanks, gscottar. Another 5 fathoms and they’d be all alone on the floor of the Mariana trench…While I was looking, I noticed that the Brewers are atop the NL with a 2.96 team ERA, but what’s really astounding is that the entire Tampa pitchng staff has only allowed 8 HR’s. Also, the Cubbies are tied at 12 for the lowest total HR’s allowed. That’s impressive when you take Wrigley Field into account.
April 20, 2023 at 11:56 am #217213Bumgarner owns some of the most impressive post-season numbers in the last 30 years. In a shade over 102 post season IP’ed he’s 8-3 with a 2.11 ERA along with 3 CG SHO’s. That’ll stand up against anyone. He was really something for awhile.
April 20, 2023 at 2:24 pm #217218I wouldn’t be interested in Bumgarner unless he agreed to go to AAA. Right now he’s pretty bad. He’d certainly be behind Woodford and Liberatore and maybe Connor Thomas too. And, if I were a gambling man, I would bet on the Cardinals now taking an opportunity to stretch out Pallante and allow him to start again. Hudson appears about done (I’m not quite ready to throw in the towel, but it’s close) and Graceffo really needs at least 4 months of seasoning. Plus, VerHagan isn’t an option anymore since he is now completely relied on in the pen. So the starting pitching depth in the short run is going to be Libby, Jakey W, and Pallante. At least that would be my bet. But sure, if Bumgarner wants to come pitch at Memphis, then why not?
April 20, 2023 at 2:30 pm #217219We have taken flyers on aging veteran lefties before. JA Happ, Jon Lester, and Wade LeBlanc gave us a few decent months in 2021. Maybe Madbum could do the same.
April 20, 2023 at 2:59 pm #217220Yeah, he’s been relatively ineffective for some time and is currently what could be termed horrible. In any event, someone will undoubtedly take a chance on him. Maybe he can reinvent himself, so like you mentioned, why not place a call?
