Top of 9. Andrew Chafin looking to close this game out for Arizona.
DeJong – Bloops a single into short right field and that’s the way to get it started Paulie.
Motter – Strikes out on a pitch that one-hopped home plate.
Contreras – On 3-2 he draws the walk and the Birds are in business now.
Donovan – Lines a base hit to left but with so much authority that DeJong will have to slap on the brakes at 3rd base. Bases crammed with Cards for Goldy.
Goldy – …..oh Nellie that 2-2 pitch could easily have been called a strike. Goldy lines a base hit to left and in scampers Paulie with the tying tally…..sweet. Bases still bulging with Birds with just the one out.
Arenado – Strikes out on a very low Chafin offering.
Nooty – On 3-2 he walks and the Cards have recaptured the lead 7-6. And Chafin is getting yanked.

Diamondbacks 6Yeah, Euro, my dad didn’t go too far out of town, but StL to KC was one of his favorite runs that he made all the time and he also used to go to quite a few places in Illinois, but never Chicago. I also remember he would go to Tulsa quite a bit. At any rate, if he was gone for 3 days it always seemed like he’d be off work for 3 or 4 days when he got home unless he was on call. He used to call it being, “On the board,” and if they called him he was expected to be at the rail yard within a certain amount of time.
Well, I don’t want to speak too soon, but it looks like the Redbirds may pull this one out of the fire. I guess all they have to do to win is push across 10 runs…Easy formula, right?
Kevin Ginkle inherits the bases loaded situation here in the Cardinal 9th with 2 out.
O’Neill tattoos one to left that lands in for a hit and will head all the way to the wall…..one run is in…..here comes another….and let’s make this a hat trick shall we as Tyler O’Neill has cleared the bases with a ringing double and just like that the Redbirds have transformed this one into a laugher…..10-6 Good Guys!
Never speak too soon is good advice, but the best way for the Cards to win is when it’s not necessary for the pen to get a save. This is not a save situation, so . . . .
Hicks walks the lead off batter ……he simply should not be allowed to do that. Arenado gets a force play at 2nd for the first out. Rivera grounds a single into left and in my excitement, I may have wrongly classified this game as a “laugher” last inning…….to the baseball Gods please accept my deepest apologies for those errant words.
Herrera grounds out with runners moving up to 2nd and 3rd, but now we have 2 outs.

Arizona Diamondbacks 6Yeah, he deserved a W Pugs, but he should know that with this BP he’d serve himself well to work more than 5 innings. He left the game at 76 pitches. At any rate, he still needs two W’s to attain 200.
How about this “hold” stat? Stratton and Romero each get a hold after each allows 2 ER’s in 0.2 and 1 IP’ed respectively. I’d say what they’re “holding,” but there may be kids or ladies on here…
Seemed to be some tension with the ump the last inning or two. That included the high called strike on Carlson, Hicks getting squeezed on two “outside” pitches, the ump stepping in to initiate a bit of a confrontation with Willy, and then Hicks getting called for a couple timer issues. Not sure if it started then or went on much of the game because I didn’t watch until late in the game. It’s really every game these guys show they are incompetent far too often.
It’s be nice if the umps had to answer questions to the press, just like the players and managers do. It could clarify why the umps are right when it’s not so obvious, and it would discourage the showboating assholes from being showboating assholes for no good reason, or else be exposed. It’s a public game with a lot of money on the line (players, monetary winning incentives, fans, bettors, etc.) so why are the umps shielded from the public accountability, unlike the other participants?

In many cases, holds and blown saves are not very good stats.
That’s a good question, Euro, but what bothers me more than that is that it doesn’t even seem like they’re held accountable by the big MLB bosses. I’m reasonably certain that conversations about lackluster performance exist from time to time, but whatever issues are discussed seem to be a closely guarded state secret.
Once the bullpen blew Waino’s lead I got disgusted and turned the darn thing off. I checked this morning expecting to see another loss, and woe and behold we won! Watched the highlights of the 9th inning.
I was like my dad when he would watch Nebraska-Oklahoma games. My dad was from Nebraska, and went to NU as a freshman and played football. He transferred to a smaller school in Nebraska after his freshman year though, and played on some really good teams, eventually getting into the school’s Hall of Fame for football.
Anyway, for years there in the ’70s and ’80s Nebraska had real good teams, but could never seem to beat Oklahoma. When the OU-NU game got out of hand in the second half my dad would jump up out of his chair and stomp out of the room mumbling something like, “…I don’t need to watch any more of this!!”. That was me last night. 🙂
I instantly became a huge college football fan as a little boy when I watched the Oklahoma/Nebraska classic on Thanksgiving Day, 1971. Rodgers versus Pruitt, number 1 Huskers and number 2 Sooners. What a game. (My uncle was a college prof who taught in Oklahoma — not at OU, though — so of course I rooted for OU in that game, which the Huskers won 35-31 if memory serves.)
Been an Oklahoma and Grambling fan ever since. (Grambling College Highlights was a TV show on Sunday mornings that I never missed in the early ’70s.) Those Eddie Robinson teams were terrific and terrifically entertaining. It’s only fair that if I had to suffer through the last half century of Illini gridiron malfeasance, I’d also have a successful school or two to cheer for.
Yeah, having Barry Switzer coaching OU just rubbed it in a little more.
I was in high school when the classic ‘71 OU-NU game was played. Our whole family, my parents, my two sisters and me, all watched it. To this day that may be the greatest college football game ever played.
Kind of like some things about MLB, college football is not as good anymore with the huge conferences. The old Big Eight was so cool. I liked it much better when NU was playing regional schools. Now they have conference games against schools like Rutgers, Maryland, Penn St etc – just not the same. Plus we are going to have UCLA and USC moving out of the PAC-12. It’s like everything with big time athletics – it is all about squeezing a few more dollars into the purse.
I will never forget 1978. Osborne finally beat no. 1 Oklahoma, 17-14. The domination was over. We were so excited that we immediately booked tickets to Miami for the Orange Bowl.
However it was not the last game of the season as it was traditionally. The next week, unranked Mizzou came to Lincoln. It was bad conditions with wind out of the north and cold, wet sleet coming down. Sitting in the last row (99) of the south end zone, it was the most miserable I had ever been at a game – both due to weather and results. From the very start, James Wilder ran up and down and over the let-down Huskers and then, the Orange Bowl had lost its luster.
The pain wasn’t over. When it came to bowl selections, Nebraska was no longer the top attraction. So the Orange Bowl committee decided on a rematch. The second time, Oklahoma won by a TD. Of course, it rained. So disappointing…
I have always admired the Nebraska football program. It was elite for many years although rather mediocre lately.
I actually met Barry Switzer once in a restaurant about 20 years ago. He was originally from Arkansas and was back over here visiting. He was as cocky in person as you might imagine. One of my favorite football memories of my youth was when Arkansas and Lou Holtz thrashed Switzer and OU 31-6 in the 1978 Orange Bowl (following the 1977 season). It prevented OU from winning the national title.
Just a friendly little reminder to stay on topic, gentlemen. No problem in veering slightly off track every once in awhile……heck even I have been guilty of that once or twice. But we have enough chat here to fill up an entire Barry Switzer thread over at the Oklahoma Sooner University Herald.
