I’m not aware of any two win season, Bling, but in 1973 the Cardinals started the season by going 2-12 in their first 14 games. They ended that season 1.5 games behind the Mets in the old NLE and weren’t eliminated until Oct. 1, 1973 when Seaver and the Mets beat the Cubs at Wrigley. Poor starts can have lasting effects. Let’s hope we don’t drop the next 7 games…

Something just seems grossly off, and that run in with TO I don’t think has settled out yet.

They looked like a lifeless bunch tonight. TO looked like he was pressing. Who knows though, it’s easy to see bad things when they’re losing like this. Burleson and Walker in the corners make everything but the absolute routine stuff look like it might end up with an interesting twist.

Rick Wise and Reggie Cleveland are not walking through that door.

I used to listen to a lot of games on the radio with my grandma whenever we’d go over to visit, Euro. I distinctly remember after that Cardinal season had been over for about a week or two I had a phone conversation with her in which we both agreed that our team had done pretty well to have made it exciting that season. I can still hear her saying almost verbatim, “If we just hadn’t of lost all those games right at the start”…Haha!

1td, I listened to many night games on KMOX from NC in the late 60s and 70s as a young newbie Card fan. The fading in-and-out would drive me crazy, but it was better than waiting to see the box score in the next afternoon’s newspaper.

That good spring seems like a distant memory. Where are the Marlins when you need them?

I guess Packy is day to day. What does it say when last year’s mop up guy is in your rotation and your back up mop up guy gets injured? Well, we have an endless number of mop up guys.

I think Flaherty has been very lucky so far, with avoiding the level of ugliness that all those walks can result in. 1.80 ERA with a 1.700 WHIP. That luck will not hold up. Sooner rather than later he’s going to get roasted. Then what?

The question for me is if Flaherty can throw more strikes and walk fewer batters, will he get hit hard or improve?

I think he slowly improves. He’s been hurt for most of three years and it’ll take a few starts to get it all back together.

My biggest concern is that he has another months long injury….

Speaking of mop-up guys, the “release VerHagen” mob has been very quiet lately.

    Here’s why. Between spring and regular season, 12 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 1 R, 14 K.

    Time for more meaningful innings.

Hehe. Just shows you it’s usually about recent performance and nothing personal.

Last night, the similarities with Wainwright hit me. We saw Adam lose velocity in his career and he began to nibble more, thus pitches per plate appearance went up. With Jack, he now throws more lower 90 pitches than he did pre-injuries, so I’m guessing the walks are partially due to not trusting his stuff as much. Of course rust and change in mechanics play a part now too. Then in Jack’s post-game comments last night, voila! He said he was “nibbling.”

So I think the answer to your question is another question. Does Jack throw more strikes, a la Greg Maddux, or does he throw more strikes my moving his wildness from out of the strike zone to inside the strike zone.

    Was Naughtons injury anything major?

Hard to say. He got the first two batters out, then left the game abruptly after a mound visit by the Marmol and the trainer. I think the latest word is he is being evaluated.

So far I have only seen forearm tightness, day to day.
