I don’t think managers as should publicly call out players. I don’t personally mind him saying something to O’Neil but keep it in house. I’ve heard that it’s possible O’Neil was not going a hundred percent because he didn’t want to get injured. If so, I think that’s not good. If you are that fragile, maybe sports isn’t your thing. But that’s just me. Still even if, marmol has to do better. I remember him calling out bader last year for not hustling to first on a fly ball that everyone knew would get caught. Funny thing is he was still running hard, far moreso than goldy or arenado do on those type outs. Funny though he didn’t call out goldy on that ground ball to first that he kind of muffed plus hit the runner standing on first with a lazy throw back to the field.
O’Neil not sprinting full speed was on Oli, not just on Tyler. Tyler spent the off season under team guidance adhering to team protocols developed to keep him 100%. The team communicated this to Tyler. and O’Neil let it slip that this was his mindset.
If Tyler wasn’t sprinting, I believe the impetus was on Oli to clearly state that he expects everyone at full speed 100% of the time. Since we assume all coaches do this, and we know there are always player exceptions due to various physical limitations, then it goes back on Oli to personally clarify to O’Neil how he wants the off season goals implemented now. I bet he didn’t from Tyler’s reaction. Marmot showed poor leadership and poor decision making.
