#STLCards LHP Steven Matz said he will see Cardinals team doctor, Dr. George Palleta, on Monday to determine whether or not he needs surgery on the torn MCL in his left knee. The grade of the tear will determine whether surgery is needed. Regardless, he will be out several weeks.

With Dakota Hudson set to return to the #STLCards rotation as early as Saturday, manager Oliver Marmol said his team can get away with a 4-man rotation (Wainwright, Mikolas, Pallante & Hudson) until Aug. 6 or so. He said a potential fifth starter is not currently on the roster.

I’m seeing other Teams with similar results. I’m not blaming the analytic angle, but yes I am. These hitters should be better than hitters of the past and I’m not seeing it. Then again I haven’t looked at the stats from the past to compare. I’m too busy being retired.
You would think if Matz is out for any length of time, they’ll be forced to trade for starting pitching at the deadline. There’s not really any way around it at this point.

These are old school stats I know. But explain to me what analytics has done for the Hitters. They are hitting for a lower avg, fewer runs scored, fewer runs driven in, fewer homers, fewer hits, lower OBP, SLG, OPS, Striking out more, hitting into more double plays, stealing fewer bases, not getting caught as much n those stolen base attempts, grounding into more double plays. So someone please explain to me how baseball has improved with the new analytics. Has the shift made that big of a difference. That would explain some but not all. That doesn’t affect a fly ball. OF’ers have always shifted. Maybe I picked the wrong year it was at the bottom of the screen. May look and see if it was just that year.
Marmol says this the team can get by with a 4 man rotation for two weeks. Sorry even if management is to blame, that’s a stupid thing to say as a manager.
Could it be performance enhancing drugs are not as rampant?
Pretty sure 98′ was the Big Mac vs Sosa HR derby season, right in the thick of extreme hitter stats.
Maybe not use the PHD era in the comparison?
Pitchers are also throwing much harder in 2021, with better breaking pitches. It’s much harder to hit in this era, steroids or no.

Part of the excuse for the DH was so pitchers wouldn’t injure themselves batting and running bases. Now I guess we need to place a designated fielder near the mound so pitchers won’t have to move at all, similar to what you see in youth coach pitch leagues.
To literally add insult to injury, the Matz fielding attempt on Votto’s grounder has to be about the goofiest looking thing you can imagine at the pro level.

Did he mean Active or 40 man?
Was he reading from script or sending a message?Then again I haven’t looked at the stats from the past to compare. I’m too busy being retired.

This was my first thought. Then I thought no big deal. Marmol’s just stating what’s been obvious to most of us all season.
I’m beginning to think the smart play may be to make no trades until this off season. Let’s get some additional experience for the youngsters and play the best we can and just see how things turn out. Take a look around…..even with a significant pitching acquisition or two, does anybody think this current group is going to make a serious bid at winning it all?
We are only 2.5 behind The Crew for the Division and 3.5 out of the 2nd WC slot. So we are within striking distance of being “competitive”. That doesn’t add up to Mo doing much before the deadline besides a tweek.
I expect to see some deck chair shuffling, and if things go south, the band will start playing so we don’t panic.
Nah Pugs, the FO doesn’t get to kick the can down the road because they built a middling roster.
There were plenty of significant starting pitchers available last offseason and they went cheap with Matz.
If we give them a pass at this deadline, what says they don’t repeat last offseason again?
Second in attendance deserves a better budget commitment. It feels like they still have 2020’s bottom line in their 5yr budgeting.
We’ve gone from 7th (2019), to 10th, to 10th, to 13th (2022) on opening day budgets. CB Tax totals mirror this.
Significant acquisitions needed.
Glad I missed the game since I thought it was a night game too. We didn’t get our 5 runs again. When we give up more to the other guys we lose.
So for any team beating yourself up over losing doesn’t help anything. You suck it up and try again. I’m with Pugs on setting reachable goals. Ours should be the Division Title. We do have some exceptional players and another half with a ways to go.

Pitchers are beating hitters lately.Want more action then juice the ball up. Scoring will go up. Suck it up Cardinals-its the big leagues now. Go Cardinals!I appreciate your sentiment jj, but unfortunately I believe because the front office built a middling roster is why they’ll kick the can down the road in the coming days. This tiger isn’t gonna change its stripes. Mo and BDW are willing to pull the trigger on strategic and bigger moves when they seem to have a very good chance of success. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case for the more tactical in-season moves that have higher risk/reward. They settle for marginal reinforcements.
I think we are dealing with 2 factors:
1) We are playing a number of young players, who need experience, and are not nearly finished products. They are going to make mistakes, but I am convinced we will be one of the best offenses in either league. We could use help in our young pitchers to develop.
2) I think we make many money over best roster moves. I don’t see keeping McDonald around, and surely don’t know why Verhagen was given a 2 year deal. I would sooner have given Thomas, Pacheco, Boskiovic, Walsh first looks.
I believe we can make a run, but we need another starter and reliever or 2 added. Some things could be done in house, improvement by Kiberatore would help, and an outside acquisition of a starting pitcher would help.

I am convinced that Matz is Jaime Garcia 2.0. He will have the occasional good outing followed by a stinker then repeat the cycle. The only consistent thing to count on is being on the IL. I still don’t get the 4 year contract.
