Willy, Pete was overrated and any comparing to Cobb is suspect. The only similarity was they both choked up a lot.

ParticipantNot true Carter. They both could absolutely rake and place the ball basically where they wanted. Very few guys today can come close to that. Both played hard, played to win, and gave all for their teams. Both also going by accounts weren’t and aren’t really good people. So lots of similarities. Cobb was all round the better player cause I consider Cobb easily in top ten all time but rose was still a great player. I’m not a reds fan but I am a fan of great baseball.
August 29, 2022 at 8:26 pm #198251I never saw Ty Cobb play the game of baseball, but I can tell you that the great Pete Rose was without question a guy who played the game of baseball like he was mad at it.

ParticipantWell mikolas is getting lazy now. Giving up a couple of home runs. Let’s not celebrate too early.
August 29, 2022 at 8:48 pm #198253Mikolas looking like he needs some Geritol! Not having fun now!
August 29, 2022 at 8:49 pm #198254Didn’t they call Rose Charlie Hustle?
August 29, 2022 at 8:51 pm #198256He’s beat wind up the pen!
August 29, 2022 at 8:53 pm #198257Well this got more exciting than one would hope
August 29, 2022 at 8:54 pm #198258Mikolas has given up over 100 yards worth of homers this inning and now can’t finish the 5th or earn a “W” with a 8 run lead coming into this 5th inning…… that’s disturbing.
Tommy Lee Jones played a great Ty Cobb on the silver screen.
August 29, 2022 at 8:55 pm #198259Glad to see Marmol make him give up the baseball. I’d seen enough. Can’t keep holding out for Mikolas to get the W.
August 29, 2022 at 8:57 pm #198260I disagree 1TD. You are still up by four. Mikolas has been one of your guys all year. You give him a chance to get through 5 and get the W. I give him two more batters and see if he can get ‘em.
August 29, 2022 at 8:57 pm #198261If they lived during the same era, Cobb would absolutely kick Pete’s keester if push ever came to shove between the two. Plus Cobb was the better ballplayer……but it was close.
August 29, 2022 at 8:57 pm #198262Willy, Rose was one of those hyperactive kids that drove his mom crazy, just couldn’t sit still
Cobb was normal, even quite smart. In his playing days he was liked by his teammates. He never spiked an infielder, never sharpened his spikes (a myth from a still of him scraping mud off his cleats)
As far as the race hating he was a Southerner of his time, one of many Jim Crowers, like Enos Slaughter
Of course becoming a stone drunkard and pill popper by his 60’s changed him for the worse, for good
August 29, 2022 at 9:03 pm #198263Stratton slapped a tourniquet on it and stopped the bleeding! Patients gonna live!
August 29, 2022 at 9:03 pm #198264Looked to be getting a little silly, but it turned out okay.
August 29, 2022 at 9:08 pm #198265Cobb wasn’t one who could let things go. He was driven to succeed, and would fight you if he felt you did him wrong.
But some of his “drive” has become overblown in the myth. Like Carter said, he did not sharpen his spikes, nor purposely spike a guy. Although raised in the Deep South, he felt negro players should be given a chance to play in the big leagues.
Pete was driven as well. Pete was a terrific player. Unfortunately he is jerk. Tyrus had his personal demons as well.
August 29, 2022 at 9:08 pm #198266That errant throw by Solano……not sure when I last saw a throw like that?……many many years ago.
August 29, 2022 at 9:10 pm #198267Alright we get a rh Chincy pitcher but only cause our big boys are coming up.
August 29, 2022 at 9:10 pm #198268The second blown DP in four games. Gorman had that errant throw for us, and now Solano for the other guys.
August 29, 2022 at 9:11 pm #198269Man, Goldy really off tonight.
August 29, 2022 at 9:12 pm #198270Kind of thought Nolan would pick up Goldy. O’Neill starting to look like the 2021 version.
August 29, 2022 at 9:12 pm #198271He may get 30…

ParticipantWell I trust the books I’ve read on Cobb to be accurate. Rose was liked by his team mates. Guys always like team mates who play 110 percent even if they themselves don’t play with that gusto. Yes the spike sharpening might and I say might have been a myth but he did slide into bases with his spikes up and ready to go into guys legs and anything else there. Opposing players didn’t like him but they did respect him. Same way with Rose. I’m not going to spend more time on this but Cobb is in the hall and rose would be if not for the gambling and not one of the lower tiers either.
August 29, 2022 at 9:14 pm #198273Nado rbi double! I feel better now! And a double Dinger O’Niel ! Now I feel great!

ParticipantNice to see us picking it back up after mikolas scuffled. Really weird thing with him tonight. I haven’t seen a good pitcher just fall apart that fast.
