Recently one of the VEB writers compared Dylan Carlson to Stephen Piscotty. I don’t agree with that at all. I think Carlson projects to have a better career. Last winter I compared Carlson to Andrew Benintendi. Let’s compare their 2021 stats so far.

    Carlson: .253 avg, 336 obp, .411 slg, .747 ops, 11 HR, 44 RBI, 1.1 WAR, 108 ops+

    Benintendi: .257 avg, .307 obp, .412 slg, .720 ops, 11 HR, 38 RBI, .4 WAR, 96 ops+

The numbers are similar but Carlson has been the better player and I see that trend continuing.

I wouldn’t really agree about Carlson vs Benintendi. Benintendi hits RHP almost 30 BA points higher than Carlson, and that is most of the time. Carlson has a huge platoon split so his abnormally good numbers vs. lefties skews things. Carlson also strikes out more. Carlson is younger, so maybe his career will be better, but that remains to be seen. He is also cheaper.

I’ve never been a Piscotty fan but its too bad we gave away the two guys we got for him. Munoz has been hitting .300 in AAA all year and Schrock hit .290 in AAA and has gotten off to a .300 start since being called up. Like I said elsewhere, we need to chain some wonks to their computers and heave them overboard.

“The Rock” had “Productive Pro” written all over him from the time he arrived from Oakland. I see where another ex-Bird took both a major hit to his ERA and his confidence in Denver last evening. Sandy Alcantara Montero got royally lit up in his 3 2/3 innings, yielding 10 well earned runs on 10 hard hit hits.

K.C. will not be able to figure out Kim in this game. I’m calling this one 7-2 St. Louis with the aforementioned Dylan Carlson finding the cheap seats with bat in hand. Look for Tyler O’Neill to follow up his 4 hit performance with another multi-hit effort.

I generally like what we have going on the outfield right now. I think Carlson will be a solid guy for RF going forward, probably a 3ish WAR guy who might peak at 4-5 for a couple of seasons. That’s pretty good. O’Neill and Bader give you a base with their speed and defense, and O’Neill in particular has looked good with the bat this year (best wRC+ on the team) as he’s cut the Ks and increased the walks from his early season stats. It would be nice if they could slot O’Neill in CF and pick up a bat for LF/DH and allow Bader to be used for late inning defense and spot starts. I think that would really improve the whole OF and team in general. Michael Conforto was my choice before the year and though his 2021 hasn’t been that good, maybe they could sign him to a shorter, better money deal because of it? The LH thump would be nice.

Realistically, what probably will happen is we will have a rotation of 4 outfield guys, or 3 middle infield guys, and Edman doing the IF/OF thing, and somebody not in the lineup at a defensive position will be the DH that game. That way we can use economical role player types rather than paying a thumper. And we won’t be doing the trade from our surplus thing, so we will have to buy anybody we get or trade our Faberge eggs, as a commenter used to say.

I would like to see us sign Chris Taylor for next year. He can play all over the field, is very productive, and wouldn’t break the bank.

Christopher Armand Taylor….. let’s get him into the Redbird fold, Scotty! Love the name “Armand”. In the classic movie “The Birdcage”, the late Robin Williams played the part of Miami nightclub owner, Armand Goldman, to complete perfection. The exchanges between Robin, Nathan Lane and the incomparable Gene Hackman, were absolutely priceless. Go Birds!

Taylor would be just the thing. About the same age as Arenado and hits better than .260 when not hitting in Denver. But somebody will make a better offer than Mo. LA maybe.

Edman will be their Taylor. I fully expect them to go after a SS in the market, probably Seager and overpay for his above average left handed bat sacrificing the defense and injury history (I like Story but he hasn’t been great the last 2 years, out side of Colorado questions, and defense this season is way down. Saw his throwing speed has really suffered this year) , and trade DeJong for whatever they can get to whoever thinks they can fix his bat and utilize his steady defense.
    1. Carlson RF (S)
    2. Goldschmidt 1B (R)
    3. Arenado 3B (R)
    4. Seager SS (L)
    5. O’Neill LF (R)
    6. Gorman 2B (L)
    7. Bader CF (R)
    8. Molina C (R)

Edman (S), Sosa (R), ???, veteran C (expect Knizner traded and commit to Herrera as the future)

Don’t know if it’s the best idea, but what I expect them to try to do.

It would be a big mistake to commit to Herrera until has the better part of a year in Aaa and still looks good. You don’t want to be shopping for catcher when you need a catcher.

Thru two, the Good Guys find themselves with a 2-0 advantage. After 1st inning walks to Carly and Goldy, Yadi singled them both in. Kim has not allowed a base hit as of yet.

Saturday nights usually finds scant attendance figures for our game threads. Tonight looks typical thereof. I know at least Scotty is out there. Bling is presently drying the dishes for the wifey…..and doing his best to not think of anchovy pizza. Euro is playing with his grandkids. Rat is sitting on his couch, daydreaming of a certain Gasthof waitress, watching the game with his faithful pooch….who continually demonstrates her loyalty by enduring her master’s thick cigar smoke. JJ is studying up on our outfield situation. Wooster is playing poker with a few buddies…..and taking them to the cleaners. Z is out on a hot date. And Cardinal In France is counting sheep in the south of France as we speak.

Thru three now and the score remains the same….2-0 Birds. Both team have only logged one hit thus far.

No poker for me tonight Pugs- just finished my din-din Kabasi and Sauerkraut , macaroni and cheese and buttered mixed vegetables. Yum-yum.
Off to a good start tonight. Love playing with a lead!

Just back from the food truck park. Chicken parmesan sandwich from the Zia’s truck. Whenever I go into the canteen there and order a Busch the barkeep, or barista or whatever looks at me funny. So tonight I stepped up and ordered a dry hopped helfenweidentaller unfiltered. Uhm, like we don’t have that, she said. A Busch then. We are up 2-0, I see.

I wouldn’t say constantly. The back injury from a few years ago is worrisome, but the missed time this year was due to being hit by a pitch. He’s the SS I’d take first if I was gonna spend the money to sign one.

On the heels of your anchovy pizza misadventure, you opt for a food truck chicken parmesan sandwich, Bling? You’re living on the edge, Bling. Beautiful din-din, Wooster! You should have been playing poker though, as you’d be up a couple hundred by now. Tonight is your night to gamble.
