Wow, KC bull pen implodes! I never saw that coming. The Cardinals really needed this game and were able to come back and win!

He’d thrown a lot of pitches, but I agree…you feel like you have to stick with the guy who was almost unhittable.

i think matheny is gonna receive some heat for taking rosenthal out especially how he battled and won vs schrock.

Matheny over thought that one. We weren’t going to score off of Rosenthal.

A secondary gift was the ump calling the 2-0 pitch against Wong a ball. He missed his spot, but it was definitely a strike. Once it went 3-0, you knew it was over. Rosario couldn’t hit the zone.

In a never-doubted win, the Cards defeat the Royals, 6-5, and take the series two games to one. The Cubs lost to the Tigers so their division lead over St. Louis is just two games.

In other good news, the Cubs lost to the Tigers again. The Cards are “2” games back. It would be nice to get a sweep of the Pirates, who somehow even worse than the Royals, tomorrow.

Nice comeback win! Agree w/STLCard, the 2-0 pitch to Wong that should have been a strike sealed the deal. But Rosario had trouble the whole time. I really wanted to see Molina take on Rosenthal, but I’ll take the win!

Down by 3 in the 9th and coming back to win is what elite teams pull off. I don’t think even the most rambunctious Redbird fans are compelled to use the word “elite” in association with this team just yet, but it sure is a good sign that our boys have something special to serve up here in 2020.

I don’t think Matheny gave it away. Rosenthal had over 33 pitches and like McLaughlin laughingly referred to I think there was some hesitancy to put Rosie against Yadi in that situation. Yadi probably knows his every move and every weakness and maybe he knows if Rosie tips his pitches. Plus Rosie had many games like this as a Cardinal – spot on and then all of a sudden spot off. He was losing it and he didn’t really want to pitch to Yadi. But Rosario must have been brought in from the clubhouse and his shoe shining duties.

Rosenthal also threw 16 pitches the night before. Going back to back with a total of 50+ pitches is a lot to ask from anyone. At the time, I was a little surprised because I guessed the old Matheny would have left Rosenthal in despite his workload.

Right you are Pugs. Cards a not an “elite” team, but hoping they are not “a lite” team. Ugly wins sure are better than pretty losses (or ugly losses like the game before).

If I am Matheny I am going to force the Cardinals to beat my best reliever despite however many pitches he has thrown. If he was worried about pitch count then why did he bring him in during the 8th inning? He blew it.

Can’t win for losing. When MM was here, he was accused of over using certain relievers to the detriment of their arms.

KC used 8 relievers last night. You got to figure that at least one would have a bad night…. right? Luckily we got the two of them at the right time.

Picking up on that is the job of the bullpen coach…. he needs to be able to pass his insight to the dugout. I’ve always felt that there will be days that relievers are not feeling in tip-top shape.

I respectfully disagree. To answer your question, the reason Rosenthal was brought in during the eighth was because the Cardinals had the bases loaded with one out. His team was trying to protect its one-run lead that they had just established in the top of the inning.

I applauded Matheny for NOT holding his closer until the ninth like push-button managers do. Instead he called on Rosenthal in a critical situation and Rosey got the job done.

However, Rosenthal had to sit during the top of the ninth and try to stay warm for a second inning after having pitched the night before as well. Here is where Matheny pushed his luck. On the other hand, who was available? He had already burned through six pitchers (Rosenthal was seventh) that night alone and his pen had also been used extensively in Games 1 and 2.

Assuming Rosario had started the ninth instead of Rosenthal, based on how wild Rosario was, I think the Cardinals could have won, anyway.

To me, the key was the Cardinals getting the Royals starters out relatively early all series long. On the other hand, Waino and Hudson gave them innings.

I am not a Matheny apologist or a basher, but I am having trouble hanging this one on him.

P.S. Rosenthal said before the game that the one Cardinal he did not want to face was Molina. Had Molina beaten him there, Matheny would have been attacked from every angle. Sometimes, you can’t win…

It’s a hindsight 20/20 move IMO…he had pushed Rosy and MM had been pushing all the right buttons so far…at some point you have to trust your judgement…99 times out of 100 what he did with the score and situation works out just fine…. we just got the 1 out of a 100

Nevertheless, it took a lot of patience by the Cardinals to eek it out…they took their walks and Oneill when he did swing swung so hard no one could catch it…

I think it was probably as much of a KC meltdown as it was the Cardinals being patient instead of trying to get 3 HRs to tie it

Winning on a walk off walk was pretty nice…patience won

Well as far as that pitch to wong that was a strike but borderline, the pitcher hadnt earned it and he actually missed his spot. If the catcher had been set up there then probably a different story. Far as taking out rosenthal. If you were going to do it, it would have been smarter to bring in the left hander when shrock came up, not wait for the right handed molina. Get Schroch to roll over one of those sliders away and maybe even get a inning ending double play. Far as what rosenthal said about not wanting to face molina, i feel that was just jostling, in reality a good pitcher will be willing to face anyone.
