Unknown righty alert!! For most teams, a callup is an opportunity to get a few runs but for the Cards, it’s a chance to show off how unprepared they are for anything new. No idea why that is. Over/under on runs to start the Astros series at 1.5?
Strange game for giveaways. Seems as though the Cards are having a rainbow shirt giveaway for Pride Night if you have a special ‘Theme’ ticket. But 30K will get one of several free jerseys if you just have any ticket. Why on earth do the Cards think they have to get involved in a sexual preference observation?
Along those same lines, I love Kolten Wong but he needs to shed that shirt with the protest message on the arm. He makes enough money to just buy an ad if he feels that strongly but if every player wanted to air their protest against something the uniform would no longer be ‘uniform.’ For those who don’t know, his protest is against a super telescope being built on the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii. The natives call it ‘sacred land’ but there are already 13 telescopes up there. The new one is supposedly light years ahead of the others. I have no dog in that hunt but just don’t want to see the game degraded with protest garbage on player uniforms.
If we get into a one run lead in the 9th situation, they can’t still be thinking about handing the ball to C-Mart, can they? I would go with Miller until he has a bad outing or two.

Even with a 3 run lead I hope they will no longer hand it to Carlos but, in my view, our closer at this time should be Gallegos who does well against both lefties and righties. Miller is a good lead in with Carlos maybe in the 7th if Helsley is not around.
I think Carlos has been a bit overused, to the detriment of his last couple of outings. With a little rest, I’d feel comfortable sending him out in the 9th again.
I agree stlcard25, CMart has been overused of late. Sending him out in the 9th with a 3 run lead going into the 9th against the reds or pirates is one thing but how comfortable would you feel sending him out in the 9th with a 1 run lead facing Muncy-Belinger-Turner, or Aluve-Bergman-Brantley, or even Bryant-Rizzo-Baez?
Flaherty has allowed 4, 1, 1, and 0 runs in his last four starts, won only the last one. If he gives up a run, he loses. Needs to get Wainwright’s support for a while.
Flaherty hasn’t won a game since May 9, despite pitching well. He allowed no runs on May 26 in six innings, only to get no decision in a loss. He didn’t get the win in his 4.1 innings of shut out ball on July 21 because he only went 4.1.
I like the thought of using Gallegos as the closer for now, with Miller, Gant, and CMart in the later innings as setup.
One thing Shildt needs to keep in mind though, is if we are in the 7th or 8th inning of a one run game and the top half of the order is coming up, use Gallegos there. Don’t fall into the thought that a guy can only pitch the ninth.

9/2 DeJongLooks like Carp will be trying to regain his swing with AA Springfield for a few days. They are home until next Tuesday. I think maybe he can adapt to AA pitching. You can read Shildt’s comments and if you read between the lines all I see is “Carp we are hot man, you are not man, chill.”
Good test for the Cards for the next four series (Astros, Cubs, A’s, Dodgers). Two at home and two on the road but we also shall see if Mo has any magic in the trade game. Other than Madbum, I don’t see much in the market that we can use.

Hey Pads! Glad to see you pop in. Indeed, the Cards are playing good ball of late. Hopefully they can keep it going against the old rivals from Houston!
Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I think Altuve is the ONLY Astro that has played against the Cards when the Astros were still in the NL Central Division. And he made us look silly back then too……LOL
Gallegos would be my closer hands down.
Another strong bullpen piece added before the deadline wouldn’t be bad either.

The Cardinals have not had a share of first place this late into the summer since the final day of the 2015 regular season, when they were alone with 100 wins.
A few weeks later, the Cubs ousted them from October, and they have not been back since. The nearest they’ve come this late into the season to first was Aug. 12, 2017, when they were percentage points behind … the Cubs.
If Gallegos can duplicate his performance in the 9th with the game on the line he certainly is the most effective bullpen guy we have now. But the ninth in a save situation is a different animal.
He has done well in some very tense situations and that is a good sign. I still like Martinez as a closer. He can’t stand prosperity but when he needs to he makes the pitches to get the outs he makes the pitches.
Another thing I like about Gallegos he doesn’t throw a lot of WAZ’s (Way out of Zone) and gets a lot of SOZ’s (Swings out of Zone). Most young pitchers including Flaherty and Hudson throw a lot of WAZ’s which do nothing but elevate their pitch count. Gallegos seems to be an exception but he is also older and more experienced.
Gallegos should be the closer in my opinion also (for the record I called that he would be by the end of the season over the winter).
Who would start in a one game playoff/big game/game one of playoff series? I doubt if they give up enough at the deadline, but an ace is their biggest need. The bats have come alive, the BP can be patched together with internal pieces, but having that one “ace” is important and they have multiple #3 starters.
That being said, I wonder if AZ is still open to moving Grienke? He’s owed $35M a year in 20 and 21. Fowler, who they don’t need, but to even it out, is owed $16.5 those years, meaning Grienke would only be an addition of $18.5 for those two years which is easily acceptable.
1) Grienke for Fowler, Adolis Garcia, Woodford, Helsley and E. Montero (or around that level)
2) Tony Watson for Lane Thomas and Connor Capel if SF decides to sellThe Cards would immediately become a more complete team. Are those proposed ideas light/heavy/about right?
That would still leave them with a 2020 rotation of Grienke, Flaherty, Mikolas, Hudson and Reyes/Ponce/Cabrera/Cmart, plus others I’m sure I’m forgetting that would be options. And an OF of O’neill, JMart, Bader, MCarp?, Munoz, Carlson or a LHH free agent/trade in the offseason.
If they are serious about going for it, those would be major upgrades.
Gallegos deserves a shot at becoming this team’s 248th closer. And I’m chomping at the bit to see how he handles the opportunity. When some pitchers get handed the closer keys, they fall apart like a house of cards in a Monsoon. My gut feeling is that Gallegos will be equal to the task. I’m calling this one 6-4 Birds with Edman throttling a long one. And I would be terribly remiss in not mentioning an important programming note for this evening’s Rainbow Coalition Night at the ole’ ballpark. Your’s truly will be riding high once again in the PBP Game Thread saddle. However, our scheduled start time of 7:05pm(cst) has been moved back to 1911 hours……or 7:11pm(cst) to the layman. We very much regret any difficulties that this late change may have caused. Go Birds!
Let’s take game 1. Their starter has given up 10 home runs in nearly 49 innings at AAA. Also a lot striekouts in that time frame, 69. Hope the offense can keep going.
