6:10 p.m. RHP John Gant (7-6, 3.53) vs. RHP Jhoulys Chacín (14-8, 3.61) FOX Sports Midwest/ESPN/KMOX
September 26, 2018 at 10:24 am #70866The Cards really need Gant to be a stopper tonight. However, in his last start, against the Giants, he allowed seven baserunners in just 2 2/3 innings before being pulled. The prior time out, the Dodgers scored six runs against him in 4 1/3. If they have to go to the pen early again, it could be another ugly outcome.
September 26, 2018 at 10:25 am #70867I’d say this is pretty much a do or die win. If we lose this one – and I expect us to lose – we may as well pack it in for 2018.
As I’ve said many times, the Cubs just LOVE to put the screws to the Cardinals. And the Cubs know if they beat on us this weekend it will keep us out of the playoffs. We will lose at least two, if not all three games at Wrigley this weekend.

stlcard25ParticipantI agree that Gant needs to step up. He was good for a nice stretch and just kinda lost it lately.
As for the Cubs, I’m sure it works the other way too…why wouldn’t the Cards be up for knocking the Cubs off their division perch and setting themselves up for a wild card at the same time? They play much better on the road than at home, for whatever reason.
September 26, 2018 at 11:40 am #70874Yep the Cubs are fighting for their lives right now. They do not want to end up in the wild card game. Knocking the Cards out of the playoffs are probably the least of their worries at the moment but they will be plenty motivated this weekend. We should be too.
As I’ve stated before I think we play better on the road because of our reliance on the home run.

ParticipantHow about they score early and often and take some pressure off the pitchers. If we manage to get in the playoffs that bullpen is not nearly good enough.
September 26, 2018 at 12:30 pm #70876We had good reason to be concerned with this final stretch. Having to use 3 first year starters against Milwaukee and facing the Brewers and Cubs in a photo finish between them for the Division championship.
Making matters worse a hot Rockies team facing the fading Phillies and underachieving Nationals.
Hopefully not but looks more and more like another “Wait until next year finish.”
September 26, 2018 at 12:51 pm #70878The club does not look good right now, but poor pitching does that. In addition, our August superstar Mo Mentum has switched teams and is now playing in a purple and black uniform, and it seems that we are going to be outside looking in for the third year in a row.
But hey, you never know. Win tonight and the Phillies step up and take game in Coors, and we are feeling pretty good again. And maybe losing these games will end up being a good thing. The ideal scenario is Milwaukee win the division, and us knock out Chicago in the wild card.
Not a bad second choice for me is to have the Rox knock out Chicago. If we don’t get to October baseball, I am good with the local nine getting there.
September 26, 2018 at 1:24 pm #70880I keep looking for reasons to be optimistic about tonight’s game and the rest of the season, but I just can’t find any. The negatives just carry too much weight.
September 26, 2018 at 1:34 pm #70881Today's #STLCards lineup (9/26):
Carpenter 1B
J. Martínez RF
DeJong SS
Ozuna LF
Gyorko 3B
Molina C
Wong 2B
Bader CF
Gant SP— St. Louis Cardinals (@Cardinals) September 26, 2018
September 26, 2018 at 2:56 pm #70886I totally agree with you Mike. While I obviously want the Cards to win and get to the playoffs I am equally passionate about the Cubs getting dethroned and knocked out. Whatever it takes for that to happen I’m in favor of.

stlcard25ParticipantBrewers threatening in the first. Gant sets Shaw to fly out and now evil Braun comes in. He grounds out and the Cards get a scoreless 1st for a change.

jj-cf-stlParticipantGood throw bozo
September 26, 2018 at 6:58 pm #70900“The Gun” Martinez overthrew the cutoff man, but still got Aguilar on a wide slide into third, as the first Milwaukee run scored.
September 26, 2018 at 6:59 pm #70901If you walk them, they will score.

ParticipantGant with 58 pitches. Brewers 1-0
September 26, 2018 at 7:01 pm #70903Watching Ozuna play defense is painful. It’ll be hard to take another year of it. Cards trail 1-0.
September 26, 2018 at 7:05 pm #70904“If you walk them, they will score”.
I like it….I really like it. Simple & short…..but super sweet. Well done, RememberDiz….well done, sir!!
September 26, 2018 at 7:12 pm #70905Have some pride, gentlemen! You just can’t let these guys bash you 3 straight games at home. They’re good….bug not that good! Their little party ends now! Show some guts!
September 26, 2018 at 7:13 pm #70906NJ315
ParticipantSpeaking of walks…there’s another one.
September 26, 2018 at 7:14 pm #70907Gant gives another free pass to start the 4th. Hopefully the Cards can strand this one.
September 26, 2018 at 7:19 pm #7090878 pitches thru 4 complete for Gant. Isn’t that just par for the course for our talented young 2018 hurlers. Let’s hope they all work on that this winter.
September 26, 2018 at 7:21 pm #70909Gant has allowed just one run in 4 inning, but so what if you can’t get even one base runner. I feel strongly the Cards might get a base runner second time through the order.
September 26, 2018 at 7:25 pm #70910Carpenter’s late inning tirade last night should result in him getting the benefit of the doubt on a pitch or two tonight, as those umps had to have known they screwed him and other players wearing red out of several hideous calls in this series .
September 26, 2018 at 7:27 pm #70911
stlcard25ParticipantNot a good strikeout for Martinez there. Needed to get the runner over somehow.
