RHP Lance Lynn (2-3, 4.08) vs. RHP Spencer Schwellenbach (1-2, 4.98)

Also BS South and Southwest ExtraJune 23, 2024 at 6:25 pm #257535FYI here,
Be advised the Braves have now won 8 of their last 10. They are also on a roll. But at least we will miss Max Fried in this series. And remember this…..we don’t go to San Francisco until the last weekend of the season. The last three games of the year. If they are meaningful games for St. Louis do you think the Giants will be seeking some payback for this sweep?

June 23, 2024 at 6:55 pm #257538Did the Braves replace Spencer Strider with this Spencer? Quite a last name he’s got. Almost like that Spooneybarger fellow they had back in the day.
We finally creep two over and have to play this juggernaut.
June 23, 2024 at 7:01 pm #257539The Braves have crept to within 7 games to stay within sight, but for a minute or two it looked like the Phillies were going to create the sort of separation that was insurmountable in the NLE. I sure didn’t see that coming. I thought the Braves would easily win that division. I guess it’s a good thing that they still play the games to decide who’s best…Haha!
June 24, 2024 at 6:05 am #257561It’s a long season Dom. They had us selling a month into the season, for good reason. Traded deadline is 5 weeks away. A couple (more) injuries and we are back to the basement. As you say, that’s why we play the games. We get Contreras and O’Noot back, they hit the ground running, and we could be leading the division by July 31.
June 24, 2024 at 11:11 am #257591I too had Atlanta an easy winner in that division at the start of the season. I counted six Braves players better than anyone we had early on. Haven’t checked the stats but it could be maybe they only have 3 or 4 better now. 🙂
June 24, 2024 at 12:02 pm #257593Cant Keep: “We get Contreras and O’Noot back, they hit the ground running, and we could be leading the division by July 31”
That’s my thinking too
OK, I got one for you guys: After the Musial, Williams and DiMaggio era there was the Mays, Mantle, Aaron and F. Robinson era, a true Mt. Rushmore.
My question is: who would be the 4th head on the Musial era? I come up blank on that one.
Last question: who should be the honorable mention of the latter…Yaz, Clemente or somebody I cant think of?
June 24, 2024 at 1:17 pm #257597Good stuff Carter. Maybe Bob Feller on the Musial era as the fourth guy. Warren Spahn, Yogi or Jackie would be good too. Yaz and Clemente are both good honorable mentions for the Mays era. Flip a coin as you to who you want. The tie-breaker might be that Clemente played on two World Champions and Yaz none. But that is more of a team thing. Still I will give extra points to guys that played on World Champions at times, especially if were good or great post season players. As an example, Lou Brock’s Hall of Fame status is a bit borderline for his career, but his World Series play puts him over the top.
June 24, 2024 at 1:46 pm #257600Hmmm…I live for baseball decisions like this one. In my view, Spahn was the greatest LHP of all time, so he almost has to have his image carved into the side of the mountain, but he played and was so good for so long that you can almost include him in either group. He won 20 games for 5 consecutive seasons at ages 35 to 40 years old…Haha! As for Yaz or Clemente, I’d say it’s hands down Clemente for me only because he was in the NL and I saw him play many times. He was one of the opposing players that I feared the most during my early youth. He was a scary opponent both when standing in the batter’s box or situated out in RF. And Roberto Clemente had a certain sort of scowl that he displayed on the field that I only saw years later when a guy named Albert Pujols came along.
And I’m not sure about Lou Brock being marginally HOF worthy. I mean, in addition to amping his game way up when a WS championship was on the line, he collected over 3000 hits and was a .293 career hitter. He also collected a few SB’s along the way and was one of the most electrifying players I’ve ever seen on a baseball field anytime he reached base.
June 24, 2024 at 1:51 pm #257601My question is: who would be the 4th head on the Musial era? I come up blank on that one.
Feller would be a good one, maybe Johhny Mize.
Last question: who should be the honorable mention of the latter…Yaz, Clemente or somebody I cant think of?
Maybe Eddie Matthews, Ernie Banks, Whitey Ford, etc…
June 24, 2024 at 2:11 pm #257604Eddie Matthews is a name that seems to get lost in the mix which is puzzling considering that there’s a lot of historical background to go along with his impressive career. I had forgotten until just now that his final appearance in a Big League baseball game was as a Detroit Tiger in the 1968 WS.
June 24, 2024 at 2:46 pm #257606With Contreras starting tonight, I guess that’s the end of Raposo.
June 24, 2024 at 2:48 pm #257607Dom and Bike: Forget about pitchers. I’m thinking of sluggers with high BA’s
EDDIE MATHEWS! I was thinking of Johnny Calison, Cepeda and Stargel but Eddie is better
BTW Spahn was great but Lefty Grove would be my pick 😉
EDIT: OMG Ernie Banks!

1B A. Burleson L
C W. Contreras R
2B Nolan Gorman L
LF B. Donovan L
RF D. Carlson S
DH M. Carpenter L
3B B. Crawford L
CF M. Siani LJune 24, 2024 at 2:54 pm #257609Where’s he starting?
June 24, 2024 at 2:55 pm #257610I’ve thought Burleson looks comfortable at 1B. He’s giving Goldy a break there this evening. Burly may be hitting his way into a future 1B gig with the Cardinals.
June 24, 2024 at 3:02 pm #257611Yeah Carter, you have to include Grove in that conversation. I just go with Spahn base on longevity and the 13 seasons of 20 or more W’s. But Spahn never won 30 like Grove did and any LHP’er named Lefty gets all kinds of bonus points for that alone…Haha! In any case, there is no wrong choice between those two all-timers.
June 24, 2024 at 3:10 pm #257612No Goldschmidt tonight.
No Arenado.I am going to call this one 6-3 Atlanta with Olson a big dong to RF.
June 24, 2024 at 3:17 pm #257613But we got Contrearas back who was hitting better than both of them, Rat! Final score tonite is 5-4 Braves
June 24, 2024 at 3:31 pm #257615I tell you Dom: I don’t think ANY of those 30 game winners are legit. Dizzy for example was credited with 7 wins in relief even if there were 3 or 4 pitchers used. Back then the official scorer could have been his mailman or wife!
Denny McClain is the only guy in my book who started and won 31
June 24, 2024 at 4:39 pm #257622I am just curious about something.
Is Contreras really and truly 100% recovered?
June 24, 2024 at 4:52 pm #257623That could be, Carter, but what’s reasonably certain is that Randy Johnson is likely the last of the 300 game winners. The active leaders are Veralnder, Scherzer and Kershaw with 260, 215 and 210 W’s respectively. Our own Lance Lynn and Sonny Gray place at 6th and 12th respectively on the active W’s list. Hopefully the “Bavarian Bismark Monster” will add to his W total tonight vs. the Braves…Haha!
June 24, 2024 at 4:53 pm #257624On the post war Mt Rushmore, if you keep it to non-pitchers Mathews is certainly a good one. Berra is the other guy I would put up there.
This got me to thinking about previous eras and my list for those are as follows, with pitchers and hitters eligible:
Deadball era: Mathewson, Wagner, Johnson, Cobb
Between the wars era: Ruth, Foxx, Gehrig, Hornsby (now these are all sluggers, but that was the era when hitting dominated). Grove would be the first pitcher I would chose.
June 24, 2024 at 4:57 pm #257625That’s a good question, Rats. I’ll bet the doctor that fixed Edman would know. I think his name’s Dr. Mengele…
June 24, 2024 at 5:02 pm #257626Another guy who’s often overlooked in the between wars category is Mel Ott. He put up some pretty impressive slugging numbers for a guy that they had listed at 5-9 and 170 lbs.
