He showed the kind of command needed by a Cardinals pitcher. He may have jumped ahead of Thompson and Liberatore in the pecking order as possible starting pitcher, if needed.

I’m surprised there isn’t some discussion on Rom’s performance today. Maybe it wasn’t as impressive as it looked like to me.

Rom had a nice day today, but he has to do more than that to undo the memories of his 8.02 ERA in eight starts in games that counted last season.

I agree. But, frankly, I can’t recall either Thompson or Liberatore ever having the command Rom had today.

Hi buddy. Great to here from you. What did you think about Rom’s perfornance today? Pretty encouraging, considering the possible need for some starting pitching depth.

Jeez, Brian. You’re letting Shady and his racist sock accounts infest this forum? Wally Butterworth ~ racist radio guy who did propaganda for the KKK back in the 60’s and 70’s.

    Good Luck.

Get lost, trouble-maker. Hopefully, just some good Cardinals baseball talk here.

That’s what makes this a good forum. Thanks Bob.

Then one might reasonably ask what Liberatore has to do to undo the memories of his 5.88 ERA in eleven starts. If you did ask, the answer would be he just has to show up this spring and be named the 6th starter right off the bat. So I would not assume that Rom’s ERA last season will be any sort of a hindrance.

Whether Liberatore should start is not the topic of this discussion, but I think most anyone who follows prospects believes that Liberatore is a better pitcher than Rom. If you feel otherwise, make your case, but I hope it is more substantive than trying to equate a 5.88 ERA with an 8.02 ERA.

Whether Liberatore is better than Rom is not relevant. My point is that both stunk last year and since results don’t matter as far as Liberatore’s assignment this year, Rom’s results might not matter either. I can easily see them as the 5th and 6th starters, or 6th and 5th.

Libby had that great start against Tampa last year – but otherwise was pedestrian. I still like the potential Libby brings. Will need to see Rom develop consistently good performances before touting him as a viable rotation member.

And Rom had one great start last year against his old team, the Orioles. It led to Wainwright’s 200th win. He also had one decent start against the Phillies. But other than that, it would be an overstatement to say he was pedestrian. Rom is our 24th ranked prospect.

Think the main reason no one is saying much about Rom’s performance is that not a lot of people watched it.

I was going to put on a couple innings today before I got in the shower before work but I’ve been having trouble getting to sleep and honestly got up later than I wanted but I intent to start hopefully when I get this figured out.

Rom’s outing is reminiscent of Liberatore in that he looked really good on a day when everything was going right for him. They both arrived in MLB without having put up a stint of sustained success at AAA, so it is not surprising to me that neither has put up a stint of sustained success in MLB.

I haven’t paid close attention to the pitching in spring training. But from what I did see, Rom’s recent performance was outstanding. Tudor-like. Anxious to see if he can build on it.

I will be great if he does. He has maintained the high K rate in MLB, but with a high walk rate as well.

The only similarity Rom has with Tudor is they both throw left-handed. Rom averages twice as many K’s and twice as many walks as Tudor did.

    Wrong comparison by a lot.
