Cardinals, Lance Lynn Agree To One-Year Deal
By Steve Adams | November 20, 2023 at 11:17am CDT

The Cardinals and right-hander Lance Lynn are in agreement on a one-year contract with a club option for the 2025 season, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. Lynn, a client of Headline Sports Group, will earn around $10MM on the contract, which is still pending the completion of a physical. Joel Sherman of the New York Post pegs the guarantee right at $10MM, adding that Lynn can earn another $3MM worth of incentives in 2023

I have no problem with bringing Lynn back as long as he is being counted to be the back end innings eater Mo referred to. He certainly is no longer an ace.

I mean, he is a slight upgrade over what Wainwright was last year, but he is a downgrade from Flaherty.

I would’ve rather them bet on some guys with the potential to win more games.

Hopefully Mo still has a couple of moves up his sleeve.

I guess Lynn is a move. Hard to say if it’ll be a good one though. He could be another Lester/Happ, or could be 2023 Waino.

Welcome back Lance. I look at ’24 with optimism for you.

I am fine with the return of Lance Lynn.

I hope one of the moves that Mo might make will be to move the fences back about 30 feet or so. Maybe that way Lynn will only give up 25-30 homeruns in 2024.

If Lynn comes in to spring training in the same shape as 2023, he might be worse than Wainwright. I think there is some good left in Lynn but I am not too hopeful that he will be an upgrade to our 2023 rotation. We need much better pitching for the next 2 starting pitching acquisitions.

As a reminder, in his most recent remarks, Mo seemed to downgrade his plans to two starters and a swingman. (As an example, the latter is what they called VerHagen when he was signed two years ago.) Not three new starters.

Since they surely aren’t paying Lynn $10MM to spot start, that appears to leave just one more starter coming. If correct, does that make anyone feel differently about this addition?

What this tells me is that the Cardinals are throwing away 2024 and looking towards 2025. They want their minor league pitchers to be the rotation in a year or 2.

If he’s being counted on to be a front of the rotation pitcher then it’s just a joke move. As a back end guy, he could eat up some innings and make some good starts if healthy. He is 36 years old.

Oliver…how do you know that Lynn will be bad in 2024? I don’t know and neither do you.

The last time I saw Lynn pitch was in this past post season. He didn’t look all that good.

GC did you watch him pitch last year? I did and it was not good at all.

Last year is not next year. You don’t know how he will be next year and neither do I. Nobody has a crystal ball.

How many back end rotation guys do they have already? As a reminder, Mikolas led MLB in hits allowed and Matz was pulled from the rotation for ineffectiveness for part of the year.

Mo’s thinking Philly isn’t the only one who can get their man before Thanksgiving. Hoo-Rah.

Well Brian you are making too much sense. This does seem just like business as usual. I’m going to be optimistic for now and hope that maybe they are expecting injury problems for those two and/or others. I’ll say this if their expecting him to be a number 2 or 1, we will finish this coming season just like we did the last if not worse.

GameCard, we don’t know that Madison Bumgarner or Adam Wainwright would be bad in 2024, either. However, we can have a pretty guess based on recent performance.

The question I ask myself is this:
Regardless of role (SP#5 – SP#6 – LongR), how much better will Lynn be than Dakota Hudson in 2024?
Wasn’t it better to save those 6 million?

I wish Lance all the best with his return to St. Louis. The club needs him to provide quality innings. He was decent down the stretch for the Dodgers. I think this could be a good deal if Lance can pitch to numbers he achieved with the Dodgers after the trade deadline (almost 6 innings per start, 4.36 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 6+ K per nine).

Having said this, my biggest fear has been that the cost of quality pitching will too expensive for the budget the Front Office is working to. Thus, they will opt for going the route of second and third tier pitchers or reclamation projects to fill gaps.
