We remain 9.5 games out of 1st at about the halfway mark.

I would like to see the threads from the latter part of August in 2011 when we were about ten games out of the last wildcard spot.

Not sure I recall how that season ended up?

Those were fun times in ’11. I still recall chatting with Rat via telephone right after we wrapped up the ’06 WS.

Trade deadline is August 1, so figure 4 weeks. Things will be heating up across MLB in a couple weeks. Mo/Jr have big decisions to make pretty soon. It seems like we will probably be about where we are now two weeks from now, so I figure Mo already knows as much as he is going to know prior to the deadline. If Mo’s computer has a turbo boost button he should go ahead and push it now.

With the way this season’s unfolded I’m indifferent to what the Cardinals do at the deadline. It’ll still be interesting to see what teams like the Reds, Marlins, O’s, DBacks and a couple of other teams that haven’t been competitive in a while will do to increase their chances. In regards to the Cardinals, I’m simply not accustomed to the very real prospect of a deadline that resembles a fire sale for my favorite team, so I’d just as soon not get too worked up over it. I’d like to say that if in the next two or three weeks they could begin to approach the .500 mark and possibly climb to within 6 or 7 games back in the standings that the deadline would instill some genuine interest, but I’ve seen enough to convince me that it’s not going to happen.

St. Louis will do nothing at the deadline. They will chalk 2023 up to a bad year. They will then tell everyone that 2024 will be different. Lessons will have been learned. They will tell everyone that the nucleus is still there. They will hope from rebound years from Flaherty and others.

And……they might have a point. Knee jerk reactions can be bad.

I wouldn’t agree with that. The chance of anything huge is slim, but they will probably cut bait on a few guys at the upper end of the organization.

Yeah, the days of Walker and Holliday are distant ones and they were both added during seasons of which the team was already in a good position to make some noise.

What I meant was there won’t be anything significant done. We might see Yepez, Burleson, DeJong hit the road but that’s only if we are lucky. And that will more than likely be just a spare parts exchange.

Winning some games would be significant. Today’s nice turn from Montgomery was encouraging and Flaherty was as effective as I’ve seen him all season on Saturday, but every member of this season’s rotation has demonstrated they can’t be counted on to sustain any success for more than a turn or two. Then, even if the 5-man were to begin to display a degree of stability, there’s the omnipresent BP disaster which looms along with only 2 or 3 players who have any idea at all of where they’ll be asked to man up on defense from game to game. With the solitary exception of the bats, this team and it’s leadership resemble a three ring circus. The circus can be a lot of fun. They even have parades and I always enjoyed attending one when I was a young boy, but I’ve never seen Barnum & Bailey celebrate a WS Championship.

We will be facing lefty Braxton Garrett. He was the 7th overall pick in 2016 and finally made it to the bigs last year. Just coming into his own this year. He is going to be a tough customer. Hittable but doesn’t walk anybody and gets a lot of Ks. He’s only good for about 5 innings though. Meanwhile we’ve been losing all of Mikolas’s starts for a while now. It will be a tough one.

The Cardinals might cut bait on some expiring contracts like Monty, Flaherty, and DeJong and possibly thin out their OF ranks but there will not be a fire sale. This talk about them trading Goldy is nonsense. If anything I expect them to give Goldy an extension before the beginning of next season.

I don’t think Mo will trade Goldy, but the talk is not nonsense in that an argument can be made for trading the valuable win now guys. My opinion is that if Mo did use Goldy and NA to land solid young pitching it would be badly bungled and we would end up with nothing. I am not sure what else he can do though. We are very thin on young talent that is worth enough to matter as far as trading for quality young pitching, and what we do have will be needed to build off of going forward. The alternative is to buy a rotation and that will never happen and would be bungled anyway.

Would expect to see Yepez, Gomez,
and possibly Baker as trade chips.
Burleson and Herrera not so much.

In any event, Mo said the FO will be concentrating on the draft over the next week, and then turn to the trade market which will be heating up the last 2 weeks of the month.

Maybe so, and hopefully he would replace them with guys who are more playable rather than a bunch of bad fielding all or nothing bats. A bench full of Mercados and Motters. How sweet would that be? We should be careful what we wish for, Mo will probably make things worse.

When I said nonsense I didn’t mean the idea in the abstract is nonsense, I meant that it is extremely unlikely for the Cardinals to choose that path. I am sure they think we will be a contender in 2024 and will need Goldy on the roster to do that. Now whether they are able to assemble a contending level pitching staff is the big question.

I’m not a trade Goldschmidt advocate, but he’s the only type of player who would command a top-shelf SP’er. You get what you play for and that ain’t no typo.

Luckenbacher only had 14 PA’s during his first taste of the Big Leagues, so obviously I only had a fleeting glimpse of him. He managed 4 base hits during those 14 trips to the plate, all of which were singles. He also K’d 5 times in those 14 chances and I recall thinking to myself during all 5 of those K’s that he looked incredibly overmatched. At any rate, I can only speak for myself, but I’ll be highly surprised if he sticks around in the Big Leagues for very long.

Watching the Texas-Houston game and our old pal Adolis Garcia just whacked a prodigious bomb to knot things up at 10 in the bottom of the 7th. It only took Garcia about 90 seconds to circle the bases. I want La Bombino……or whatever they call him down in Dallas……back……please come home La Bombino. Chapman warming up to pitch the 8th.

Garcia is an All-Star this year, as is Arozarena. Ouch.

They sure are, JJ. But I don’t think Alcantara will make it, but Gallen should . I haven’t seen the list yet.

Oh and a late programming note…….there will be no……I repeat…..no PBP for today’s affair in Miami. You literally could have heard a pin drop in yesterday’s PBP, so I think I’ll just kick back and watch along with you yahoos today. Big big game.

Zach Gallen may start for the NL. I haven’t heard yet.
